TALKING TO YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT DIFFICULT TOPICS Have you ever been in a situation where you need to discuss a topic which is challenging or different with your child? This presentation will focus on providing parents with tips and strategies which can be used when having conversations about difficult topics. Some of these topics include world events, family dynamic changes or the loss of a family member. The focus will be to assist families in relaying this information to their children as well as getting through the challenging event as successfully as possible. Wednesday, July 29 @ 10:00am Tuesday, August 4 @ 5:30pm BODY CHANGES, WHAT NOW? Puberty, a terrifying and uncomfortable word for most parents. In this presentation we will discuss the changes which children go through as they enter and complete this stage of life. The discussion will focus around emotional, physical and mental changes that occur for all adolescents. There will be tips and tricks reviewed as well as strategies on approaching this topic with children with a developmental disability. Tuesday, July 28 @ 5:30pm Wednesday, August 5 @ 10:00am INTRODUCTION TO AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD) In this seminar, families will develop a better understanding of the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and what it means to their child and family. The seminar will include a description of the diagnostic process and how a diagnosis is determined. Families will learn how genetic and environmental factors are associated with ASD and common issues that are associated with the disorder. Treatment options will be reviewed with an emphasis on evidence based practices. There will be an opportunity for questions and direction in supporting families’ unique needs. NOT ON MY PLATE Is your child a picky eater? Does your child have a limited number of foods they will eat? Not sure how to introduce new foods into your child’s diet? This seminar covers the difference between picky eaters and food refusal, the meal time routine and how to increase expectations for trying/eating new foods. There is particular focus on strategies to decrease challenging behaviours around meal time, increase the likelihood of your child trying a new food and expanding food repertoires. Participants will come away with a concrete plan they can use at home based on the strategies shared during the seminar.

CHANGE IS HARD Does your child struggle with change? How about moving between environments or activities? The focus of this presentation will be supporting your child with transitions as well as changes in their environment or routines. We will review antecedent based strategies which can be used to support your child as well as practice with some hypothetical situations in a discussion based format.

COMMUNICATION TANGO Communication is a complex system of sending and receiving information. This seminar focuses on understanding the whole body as a communication tool and how we send and receive information. Participants will be taught the foundational starting points of capturing motivation, understanding their child’s non-verbal communication and effectively responding to their child’s communication. Additional focus will include the different intentions behind your child’s communication and how you can create an environment that increases the opportunity for communication. This seminar is recommended for early communicators.

COMMUNICATION CHORUS LINE Communication is a system of sending and receiving information, which becomes more complex as additional speakers are added to the equation. This seminar expands communication beyond gestures, body language and simple sentences by focusing on how to increase sentence length, add complexity to communication and introduce simple conversation skills. Through identifying learning opportunities, data collection methods and goal setting, participants will develop a plan they can implement at home to expand their child’s communication. This seminar is recommended for individuals looking to expand their child’s already existing communication skill regardless of their communication method.

VIRTUAL AUTISM CONSULTATIONSHands’ Virtual Autism Consultations are available by video or phone from anywhere in Northern Ontario and are open to any families who have a child or youth diagnosed with Autism. Consultations will provide help on service coordination, behavioural consultation and speech-language consultation.

Available for free, every Tuesday, from 10 am to 4 pm (last session at 3 pm).

To make arrangements for a virtual session, parents should call Hands at 1.800.668.8555 ext. 1333. Hands staff will help you set up a time and decide on a video or phone consult.

VIDEO CONSULT: A member of our team will provide you with a link to join us from anywhere you have Internet access. No need to download software or have any special equipment. PHONE CONSULT: Hands will call you at the time of your session.
