OneNote and OneNote Class Notebook

When to use OneNote?

As the name says, OneNote is a note taking application. It allows the

user to aggregate content from a variety of sources (documents,

webpages, pdfs, media files, …) and to annotate it as you would in on

paper. The seamless integration with Office365 allows the

synchronization of notes over a range of devices. Moreover, Microsoft is

developing a suite of applications tailored for use in education. Over the

course of this tutorial, we will be discovering several tools that may be of

use to teachers especially in the case of an i-Pad classroom environment, where digital content

is to be shared with students and when students are required to work together on group projects.

When not to use OneNote?

OneNote is not well suited for layout tasks. Creating appealing course material is difficult and,

while possible, requires an inordinate amount of tinkering to make your document look

acceptable. My piece of advice: Keep using whatever document creation tool you are used to

(Word, Powerpoint, LaTeX, …) and import previously created documents into OneNote for

sharing and annotating.

What do I have to install? There are various mobile apps, PC and Mac editions, the online app version (Office365)…

Do not get confused! Most of them work in the same manner, it’s just the interface that is

adapted to the device. However, each version can have advantages and drawbacks as not all

functionalities are available in each one. Microsoft will not be updating the OneNote 2016

application which is bundled with the installed Office 2016 suite, so we will concentrate on the

OneNote app which may be installed through Mac/iOs/Microsoft (Win10) App Stores. For

Win7 simply google “OneNote app”. The same functionality is offered via browser =>

portal.office.com => OneNote

Notebook vs Class Notebook? The class notebook extends the capabilities of a normal personal Notebook for use in the

classroom with collaboration space and private student notebooks. We will assume that you

have created a Class Notebook via the Teams application for your class, but note that it is

possible to create Notebooks and Class Notebooks independently of Microsoft Teams.

Opening an existing Class Notebook in the 1. Open the OneNote app on your device.

2. If haven’t done so already, register with your Office365 account. This will enable you

to automatically load your notebooks on to/from OneDrive/sharepoint.

3. OneNote is organized following the hierarchy: Notebook => Section => Page

4. Open the existing Class Notebook by clicking on More Notebooks and selecting the

corresponding Notebook in the list.

5. You are now presented with your view of the Class Notebook:

6. Let’s start by opening the Content Library and deleting the default section. And

creating a new section with a useful name like “Course”

7. You can then add new pages to the current section:

Adding Content to a page 1. Start by naming the page by giving it a title.

2. Editing of the text in the same way as in MS Word

3. In the Insert tab, you will find a host of different content types which can be inserted

into the notebook. Try each of the different types and check out how it looks on your

page. Remember you can create new pages if one page gets too crowded.

QUICK tip: Simply copy and pasting a youtube link automatically inserts a video

player in the document. The same is true for applications from Geogebra online

activities.

4. If your device has a pen, the Draw tab gives you options on how the pen will look

when you annotate documents.

5. The View tab allows you to customize the page layout.

Distributing pages or sections (only in a Class Notebook)

As soon as you created a page containing information in the content library, your students

may view it, but cannot modify it. You can distribute a copy of a page (or a full section) to

each of the student notebooks.

1. Open the page you would like to distribute.

2. Click on the Class Notebook tab and distribute page.

3. Select the student section and click distribute.

Connecting OneNote to Teams In order to use the full potential of the interactions between Teams and OneNote, you need to

connect both applications.

2. Select Microsoft Teams in the side panel and connect to your Office365 account if

necessary.

3. Click Connections once again and map notebooks

4. Select the Team this notebook is assigned to.

Creating an assignment in OneNote

1. In your content library create a new page which will be the template for the

assignment

2. In the Class Notebook tab, click Create assignment.

3. Set parameters of the assignment an click Create.

If you would like more subtle control over the assignment, you can also create those in

Teams.

Checking student work If you would like to check the same page in each student’s notebook, the Class Notebook tab

has an option “Check student work”.

After selecting the section and page you would like to check, you can jump from student to

student without needing to browse their entire notebook. If that page has been distributed as a

graded assignment, you can assign marks to the different students.
