Foreword

Wageningen University & Research is the only Dutch university and research institution with a One World Week to celebrate its international identity and the cultural diversity on its campus. And of course we are very proud of that. With over 100 nationalities Wageningen University & Research is a true international organisation. Wageningen University & Research staff and students want to excel in science and to act as global citizens. We aim at understanding not only scientific issues, but also our social and cultural environment. This shapes a way of thinking that enables our students, staff and alumni to work together in an international context in mutual respect and understanding.

We are curious to experience different cultures, different approaches and values and to learn from each other. In fact, many worlds come together in Wageningen and in the coming week we emphasize this. Have a good time!

Prof. dr. ir. Louise O. Fresco, President Executive Board

Discussion: Youth and agriculture 10:00-19:00

Challenges and opportunities in AfricaIn view of the current state of unemployment and underemployment in Africa, many youths are already making conscious efforts to engage in agriculture and the progress so far can only be expanded and sustained by providing them with the necessary information and enabling environment. Human capital investment of these young agricultural professionals is a stepping stone to economic development. How then can we leverage this conscious decision for agricultural development towards a viable socioeconomic transformation? See website for the different locations of the activities. Registration via the Facebook event.

Jump in your story 20:00-22:30

A playful theatre workshop with fun and creativity: we will explore theatre exercises, images and non-verbal language to look at our differences and similarities. In intercultural communication we try to understand each other, to accept differences and develop a genuine feel of involvement. Differences between cultures are easily visible. However, in order to connect one has to look for resemblances. By sharing personal experiences and emotions we discover similar issues and unexpectedly more resemblances: we connect. During this special edition of the jump-in-sessions we tell our stories and we get to know each other from another perspective!

Bringing people of the World together with Argentine Tango 18:00-19:15

Tango is a non-verbal conversation between two humans, and for that the dance is uttermost suitable to join people with different languages, cultures and ages together. For us, the essence of Argentine tango is to meet the other in the music. A tango dance can look big and spectacular, it does not mean that a dance with small and simple movements is a less finer dance. In fact, if you are attentive to yourself and your partner, that simple dance can be very special. Exactly in the Argentine Tango everything comes together. Connection, grace, movement from the inside, contact. Tango is a social dance, characterized by a constant embrace, without exaggeration or spectacular movements. ‘The couple moves in harmony, connected, which in the man is reflected in the rhythm and in the woman in the sensuality of the movements’.

Biodanza is for anyone who loves music and to dance. Besides dancing it is also a way of living your life with respect to nature, cosmos and other human beings. Come and join us in the dance!

Framing Global Poverty 20:00-22:00

Famines, drought, pot-bellied children. Such images usually come to mind when people in Europe think about poverty in developing countries. Many think that this is what the media tells them. However, the findings of Mirjam Vossens research challenge the assumption that the European media overwhelm us with pathetic images of the stereotypical ‘hungry child’. What stories do those media really tell? And how come that the ‘Western’ perception of global poverty is so distorted? Vossen challenges journalists and development NGOs to think more carefully about exactly which stories to spread. And she invites the Western audience to check their worldview. Things may be better than you think.

The Art of Being Diplomatic: 12:45-13:45Workshop Diplomacy Skills in English

‘Diplomacy is the art of telling someone to go to Hell in such a way that he looks forward to the journey!’ - Russian president Vladimir Puting. Communicating effectively in English involves applying a layer of diplomacy to interactions in order to come across in a polite way. English speakers often use simple polite forms such as ‘I’m afraid’ or ‘would it be OK if...’ in order to soften the directness of their message, thereby protecting the ‘face’ of the other person. This is vital in any indirect culture, and the probability of achieving one’s goals increases if they can be accomplished without evoking the hostility of other interested parties. This workshop will focus on the linguistic techniques employed by native speakers of English to transform potentially overly direct language into something a lot more diplomatic.

Stories around the world 12:45-13:45

Wageningen is situated near a river, like most old towns. Rivers have been our highways, as well as our borders. So have seas. The Dutch, like other people, sailed far and wide. And the water has brought us prosperity. At the same time, water is a threat. Rivers and seas take lives every year. We build dikes and seawalls, but we know we are never safe. We build strong ships, but not even the Titanic was unsinkable. Swamps and wells can harbour dangerous things. No wonder there are so many stories about water. I will tell you some of those stories. Some stories will be typically Dutch, others will be from farther away. All will show something of our fascination with water.
