IndianaThe Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum is on the grounds of the famed Indianapo-lis Motor Speedway, a National Historic Landmark since 1987. The museum appeals to more than just the racing enthusiast! Displayed, are more than 75 racing cars, including Indianapolis winners as well as race cars from internationally renowned motor sports events world-wide. Also displayed are several examples of early antique and classic passenger cars. Many of these cars were built here in Indianapolis, such as the Stutz, Cole, Marmon, National and Duesenberg. Three of the first four 500 winning cars are permanently on exhibit, including the Marmon “Wasp” which won the first 500-Mile Race in 1911. The Marmon “Wasp” was the first single-seat race car and is believed to be the first automobile to make use of the rear view mirror. A trip around the famous oval in one of the Speedway vehicles is offered to the public whenever the track is not in use for racing, testing, or closed due to weather conditions.

Ernest “Mooney” Warther, World’s Master Carver, discov-ered early in his carving career the importance of knives that would hold their edge against ebony and ivory. Unable to find carving knives of such fine quality, he decided to make his own. His mother also complained about never having a sharp paring knife. So he developed his own techniques for tempering and sharpening a steel blade that would keep its edge. Thus, out of necessity, was born the world’s finest kitchen cutlery. Today, the Warther’s Carvers are in their fourth generation of knife makers. Mooney’s son, David, and grandson, Mark continue the family business of producing outstanding kitchen cutlery with the same expertise and fine craftsmanship and can still be seen in the original workshop built in 1912. This one-of-a-kind collection has been appraised by the Smithsonian as a “priceless work of art”.

OhioThe National Museum of the United States Air Force is the largest and oldest military aviation museum in the world located at the Wright-Pat-terson Air Force Base. It tells the exciting story of aviation development from the days of the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk to the present. Permanent planes in their collection include a Convair B-36, the XB-70 Valkyrie, the B-29 Superfortress that dropped an atomic bomb in World War II, and several presidential aircraft.

Dave Longaberger was one of the most remarkable and successful entrepreneurs of his generation. His vision, his unorthodox business methods, and his belief in people resulted in the creation of one of the largest and most successful private companies in America today. “Longaberger: An American Success Story” is the fascinating first-hand account of how The Longaberger Basket Company was created and grew to be the largest basket manufacturer in the United States, employing thousands of people, revital-izing its community, and inspiring a commit-ment to quality, craftsmanship, and above all else, a unique management philosophy.

VermontIn addition to its beauty and spectacular surroundings, one of the more enduring mysteries surrounding Lake Champlain is the legend of Champ. Reminiscent of the Loch Ness Monster, Champ is purportedly a giant aquatic animal that makes the lake its home. Locals and tourists have developed something of a fondness for the legendary creature. Watch closely and maybe you’ll catch a glimpse of Champ as we drive by Lake Champlain!

Take a tour of the Morse Sugar Farm where the sap flows sweeter and 8 generations of the Morse family have been producing maple syrup for visitors for over 200 years. On average, it takes 40 gallons of maple sap to make 1 gallon of pure maple syrup. At Morse Farm, they drill one tap hole in each of their maple trees, which gives 10 gallons of sap in an average year. So, four maple trees (each being 40-200 years old) are needed to make one gallon of pure maple syrup each year.

New HampshireThe Flume Gorge is a natural granite gorge extending 800 feet from the base of Mount Liberty. Its towering granite walls sink to 90 feet below the rim. One of Franconia Notch’s geological wonders, the Flume Gorge offers a spectacular walk through a natural chasm on wide gravel paths and wooden walkways. Visitors walk down covered bridges, past waterfalls and through the gorge. Scenic pools, glacial boulders and mountain views abound. A free 15-minute movie at the Information Center provides a fine introduction to Franconia Notch State Park and the Flume Gorge.

MaineHunter and fisherman Leon Leonwood Bean devel-oped a waterproof boot that he began selling to hunters. Founded in 1912, his “Bean Boot,” or Maine Hunting Shoe business began with a four-page mail-order catalog from his brother’s basement. The boot remains a staple of the com-pany’s outdoors image. This is LL Bean’s headquar-ters and the store is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There isn’t even a lock on the front door!

The Portland Head Light, built in 1787, is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth. Historian Edward Rowe Snow wrote, “Portland Head and its light seem to symbolize the state of Maine – rocky coast, breaking waves, sparkling water and clear, pure salt air”. Those who visit the site agree – Portland Head is one of the most spectacularly beautiful lighthouse sites in New England and the most photographed.

Once we arrive at our hotel, the Anchorage By the Sea Resort, in beautiful Ogunquit, everything is just steps away. Ogunquit Beach is three miles of white sand and natural dunes.

You may want to enjoy a leisurely stroll along Ogunquit’s famous famed Marginal Way. Accessi-ble at the edge of the property, Marginal Way follows the rugged coast into picturesque Perkins Cove, Ogunquit’s quaint fishing village that is spanned by a charming footbridge-drawbridge at its mouth. This tiny cove offers splendid scenery, numerous small shops and galleries housed in weathered fishing shacks, sightseeing and a variety of dining establishments. A quaint trolley ride is a fun way to see the sights here in Ogunquit.

MassachusettsOur wonderfully humorous step-on guide, Cheryl, will join us for a tour of Boston. Sites you might see include the Old North Church, Quincy Market, Harvard Campus, Cheers Bar, Faneuil Hall, the State Capitol, the oldest restaurant in the US, a historic cemetery, the Big Dig tunnel and more!

Plymouth is a town in southeastern Massachusetts, on Plymouth Bay, 34 miles southeast of Boston. The seat of Plymouth County, it was the site of the first permanent European settlement in New England. When pilgrims disembarked on December 21, 1620, they named the settlement Plymouth.

Plymouth is now a fishing and tourist center with ship-related industries and cranberry packing houses. Plymouth Rock, a tourist attraction, is on the shore under a granite canopy. Recreations of Plymouth Plantation and the Mayflower are also great sites to visit. When we leave Plymouth, we usually get to see a cranberry bog.

The enduring fame of the Old North Church and its place in the American story derives from a fleeting moment on the night of April 18, 1775. It was then that the sexton (church officer), Robert Newman, climbed the steeple and briefly hung the famous two lanterns, which touched off the War for Independence.

Harvard University was established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony, and was named for its first benefactor, John Harvard of Charleston, a young minister who, upon his death in 1638, left his library and half his estate to the new institution. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.

Martha’s VineyardSeven miles off Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is a kaleidoscope of candy-colored ginger-bread houses, pristine beaches, unique shops and stately white mansions. Today we will put “us and the bus” on a ferry to cross to the “Vineyard”. Our tour with a local guide will take us around the island. It includes a stop at Aquinnah (Gay Head) to see its multicolored cliffs, its 200-year-old light-house, and its Native American stores. It also offers a guided walk through the camp-grounds in Oak Bluffs to visit its wonderful gingerbread-covered Victorian cottages. About halfway through the tour, we make a stop in Edgartown, which was founded in 1642. This stop gives us time for lunch, shopping, and a chance to explore the oldest town on the island, which was the center of the Vineyard whaling industry in the 19th century.

Rhode IslandNewport, Rhode Island is our morning destination. We immerse ourselves in a world of wealth and power, as it existed at the dawn of the 20th century. Discover the Gilded Age experience in the grand villas of the powerful men and influential women who made Newport America’s leading resort and a center of the arts and archi-tecture. We tour Breakers Mansion, the grand 70 room Italian Renaissance-style villa built by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, Presi-dent and Chairman of the New York Central Railroad, after his first house burned down. This man is a brother to the Vanderbilt who owned the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC. The Breakers Mansion is the “Big House” to see in the northeast!

Yale University’s roots can be traced back to the 1640’s, when the colonial clergymen led an effort to establish a college in New Haven to preserve the tradition of European liberal education in the New World. This vision was fulfilled in 1701, when the charter was granted for a school “wherein Youth may be instructed in the Arts and Sciences [and] through the blessing of Almighty God may be fitted for Public employment in both the Church and Civil State”. In 1718, the school was renamed “Yale College” in gratitude to the Welsh merchant Elihu Yale, who had donated the proceeds from the sale of nine bales of goods, together with 417 books and a portrait of King George I.

PennsylvaniaLocated 50 miles northwest of Baltimore, the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylva-nia was the site of the largest Civil War battle ever waged in the Western Hemi-sphere. The Battle of Gettysburg opened on July 1, 1863 and closed two days later with the climactic “Pickett’s Charge”. The result was a Union victory for the Army of the Potomac who successfully turned back the second invasion by General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Over 51,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured, making it the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. It was also a major turning point in the war.

The Soldiers’ National Cemetery at Gettys-burg contains more than 7,000 interments including over 3,500 from the Civil War. It was here that President Abraham Lincoln delivered his immortal Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863.
