ONE WEEK INTERNATIONAL COURSE ON URBAN HOUSING AND RESETTLEMENT FROM A GENDER, GOVERNANCE, LIVELIHOODS PERSPECTIVE
The course combines di�erent learning and teaching methodologies from participatory lectures to group work, field visits and exposure to international experts in the subject matter.
Governance of the housing sector and housing right Link between housing policies , gender and the livelihood theoryResettlement theory and practice
An extended (optional) week will cover:An international conference at the Anna University Campus with several international experts and a field visitA student’s seminar which includes several presentations from students related to the topic area of the course.
The course concludes with the presentation of the research proposals envisioned by participants based on inputs of the course, conference and workshop.
The main objective of the course is to critically reflect on the impact resettlement projects have in the livelihood of women.
At the end of the course students should be able to :
Understanding the implications of housing as a human right Understanding the meaning of adequate housing Understanding how housing policies impact the livelihood of people, in particular the poor and womenUnderstanding how resettlement projects impact the lives of the poor and womenUnderstand and apply the principles of adequate housing (i.e availability, accessibility, a�ordability, acceptability and adaptability) to resettlement sites and projectsUnderstand the application of ICT and communication technologies in improving the livelihoods of the poor and women in resettlement sitesCritically reflect on housing adequacy of resettlement projectsCritically reflect on the contribution of ICT and communication technologies to housing adequacy of resettlement projects
Additionally, to the above learning objectives, the course provides an introduction to research methodologies and research ethics , as well as the explanation on what is Participatory Action Research (PAR) and how to conduct it.
OVERVIEWOF THE COURSE :
COURSE OBJECTIVES& LEARNING GOALS :
The assessment of the course is based on the individual assignments (80%) and group assignments (20%). The individual assessment considers student’s participation throughout the course and a research proposal to be submitted on 19 December. The group assessment is based on the group assignments during workshops and the seminar.

Dr. Alonso Ayala Senior Expert in Housing & Spatial Planning IHS, University of Erasmus in RotterdamEmail : [email protected]
Alonso Ayala is an architect and spatial planner specialized on the fields of housing, informal settlement upgrading, human settlement planning and regional development planning in emerging and transitional economies. He holds an MSc in Regional Development Planning and PhD from Faculty of Spatial Planning of TU Dortmund University. He is assistant professor, researcher and consultant of housing related issues.He has consucted training and advisory work in Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey , Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, Guatemala, Venezuela , Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand , Philippines, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa.

Maartje van Eerd (PhD Leiden University, MA Human Geography University of Amsterdam) is a Human Geographer by profession with extensive experience as researcher, trainer and advisor on housing and social development issues. She posesses field research experience on informal housing, forced evictions and resettlement in India, Myanmar, Nigeria & Kenya. She has conducted training and advisory work in Mexico, Myanmar, South Africa, Ecuador, India, The Philippines, Indonesia, China, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sweden, United Kingdom, Brazil, Turkey & Nepal.
