The military
trained on
Culebra for 75
years. The tank
on Flamenco
Beach is one of the obvious remnants from
that era. What may not be as obvious are
items that could still explode. They may
not be easy to recognize. If you see some-
thing unusual, remember the 3Rs of
explosives safety. Recognize what you
found could be dangerous. Retreat from
the area without touching it, noting its lo-
cation. Report it by calling 787.742.3501.
For your safety and the protection of
Culebra’s beautiful and diverse ecosystems,
please, take only your memories; leave only
your footprints.

With nature trails; wide, white, sandy
beaches; warm, clear water; and healthy
reefs near-shore, whether your perfect
adventure is hiking, kayaking, snorkeling or
just sitting on the beach, Culebra has some-
thing for you.
Culebra National Wildlife Refuge’s diverse
habitats include sub-tropical dry forests,
mangroves, brush and grasslands making it
a haven for more than 20 species of shore-
birds. Hawksbill, leatherback and green sea
turtles nest on refuge beaches. Please do not
disturb bird or turtle nests, and please do
not leave anything behind. Many species die
when they are caught in fishing lines, plastic
and other trash,
or when they
mistake garbage
for food.
Canal Luis Peña
Marine Reserve
on the west side
of Culebra is the
first designated
no-take marine
reserve in
Puerto Rico.
This protected
area is vibrant
with sea life and
critical habitats.
Some of the best
snorkeling in all
of Puerto Rico is
along the four beaches within the reserve (Carlos Rosario,
Tamarindo Grande, Tamarindo and Melones). Look for
stingrays, sea turtles, colorful fish and coral. Remember, do
not touch anything. You can harm the coral, and other spe-
cies may harm you.
Enjoy Culebra Safely. Take only your memories. Leave only your footprints.
Not all refuge property is open to
the public. For more information,
please call 787.742.0115.
