Greetings! As we welcome another season of growth and change, I am reminded to take a moment to reflect on how much the museum has accomplished in 2017. Through our exhibitions, we featured the work of nearly 30 local and regional artists. Through our partnerships with the Boys & Girls Club, FSD #145, and the NCS Youth Home, we tripled the number of youth served in our educational programs! Through the Summer Artivation program we were able to inspire youth to be involved in the creation of an exciting mural downtown. We were proud to support and help coordinate the first Paint the Port event that utilizes the arts as an important part of revitalization and we launched the Arts Plaza project, thanks to a generous donation coupled with a prestigious grant from the NEA Our Town program. This is an impressive list and one that we all, as arts supporters, can be proud to acclaim. As with any season, change is inevitable and it is with mixed feelings of sadness and pride that I announce the departure of Carrie Baxter. Carrie has been with the museum for 8 years and has been an instrumental part of our success. We are all very excited for her and her husband, Nick, on their move to Kokomo, Indiana. Please join us at the next exhibition opening on April 20th to extend well-wishes to Carrie as she enters a new chapter in life!

Community Arts Access Grant AwardsFor nearly 20 years, the CAA program has helped individuals and organizations present original and diverse arts programs throughout the rural Northwest Illinois area. Open to the five county area of Stephenson, JoDaviess, Carroll, Lee and Ogle, many of these projects have included theatrical productions, art exhibitions, festivals and public performances. The Community Arts Access program is made possible through funds from the Illinois Arts Council Agency (IACA) and the Freeport Art Museum. Each year, FAM submits a grant to the IACA for CAA funding, to which the museum adds a 25% match. This year, IACA awarded FAM $4,365. After the match, and less a small administration fee, the total amount available for grantees is $5,019. Grants are available to individual artists and non-profit organizations who are planning projects that involve the arts. The first cycle deadline was December 29th and 3 applications were received. Since then, a grant review panel comprised of representatives from JoDaviess and Stephenson counties convened to determine award amounts based on artistic merit, community impact, organizational capability and the impact the grant funds will have on the project. A second round of grants has since been made available. Awards will be announced in April. Below are some images from just a few examples of previously funded programs:

FAM has been the recipient of several new acquisitions to the collection in 2017. Dave Youngblut and Family donated a large oil painting by Florence Furst. Florence and Dave’s mother, Luella Karcher, were friends and Florence created the painting as a gift for her. Luella was an avid gardener, so it is believed that the flowers in the basket were flowers that may have come from her own garden. Eric P. Hvolboll donated an oil painting by Henry Chapman Ford, an artist from Livonia, NY. He studied in Paris, France and Florence, Italy, and after his time spent serving in the American Civil war, he became the first professional landscape painter for the city of Chicago. Paul Fry donated an abstract painting by Melissa Dooley, an artist from Odessa, TX. She studied with noted artists, Roy Slade at The Corcoran School of the Arts and Design in Washington, D.C., and Peter Bradley at Franconia College in New Hampshire. Irene Elftmann donated two beautifully carved and painted Wayang Golek puppets made in Java, Indonesia. Wayang (also known as Wajang) is a puppet theater art form popular in Indonesia. Often a single puppeteer will enact a dramatic story using the shadows of multiple puppets. The most commonly recognized style of puppets are the flat Wayang Kulit, which are constructed with leather and decorated with paint, often including gold. The Wayang Golek puppets are unique because they are three-dimensional wooden rod puppets that are operated from a wooden base and sticks connected to the hands. These two puppets represent the characters of Gato Kaka and Hanoman.

ARTs PLAZAProgress report

The Arts Plaza project has recently been selected as one of the 64 successful “Our Town” grant recipients by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). This competitive grant will contribute $100,000 towards the project over the course of two years. $50,000 will come directly from the NEA and the other half will be matched with in-kind services and cash from our project partners, including the City of Freeport. The funds were pursued by the Freeport Art Museum as part of the City Centre economic development initiatives, which are also identified in the City’s Strategic Plan that outlines a goal to become a destination city that will in turn attract residents to Freeport.

The Our Town grant program supports creative placemaking projects like these that help transform communities into lively, beautiful, and resilient places with the arts at their core. “For six years, Our Town has made a difference for people and the places where they live, work, and play,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu.

The NEA funding helped kick-start the fundraising effort, which received a highly substantial boost through a donation of $250,000 from an anonymous donor in late 2017. In early 2018, the project received additional funding of $250,000 for a total of $500,000 raised from private donations. Coupled with the NEA grant, these generous gifts represent over half of the estimated costs for the entire construction and will allow the project to break ground this summer. In-kind contributions from the City’s Department of Public Works for grading and concrete work are planned, while FAM continues to seek additional funding for the project’s full implementation.

Some of the exciting characteristics for the Plaza include a multi-purpose stage, a splashpad and several pieces of semi-permanent and permanent works of art that will help celebrate the unique history of Freeport.

HCC Art Scholarship StudentsMarch 15 - April 10, 2018Opening Reception: Thursday, March 15th from 5-7 pm

This exhibition displays art created by students receiving the Eduard Buss and Ferguson Fine Arts Merit Scholarship awards from Highland Community College. “We are honored to provide an exhibition space for these talented students to show their work; they are very deserving of recognition” ~Jessica Modica, Executive Director.

Each year, Highland Community College offers a wide variety of scholarship opportunities designed to assist students in their studies. The Eduard Buss and Ferguson Fine Arts Merit scholarships are two such scholarship programs designed for full-time Fine Arts students. Students receiving an award in either of these two distinguished scholarship programs must meet specific criteria concerning studies in Music, Theatre, or Visual Arts. The students included in this exhibition curate the show by selecting their most successful works for exhibition, have written artist statements, and also prepare and document the art for display. “For many students, choosing, preparing, and titling a work of art is a facet of working as an artist they may not have previously experienced. To be included in this scholarship exhibition, the students had to go beyond simply meeting required academic standards; they’ve worked hard to reach this level of completion and this experience provides them with additional insight concerning exhibiting.” ~Robert Apolloni, HCC Art Instructor and Gallery Director.

Patterns from Panama features molas and other objects from the museum’s permanent collection as well as objects on loan from the Logan Museum of Anthropology in Beloit and from private collectors. This exhibition celebrates the artistic heritage of indigenous peoples of Panama through the display of exquisite works in gold, ceramic and stone pieces created by ancient Panamanian cultures and an array of twentieth-century mola textiles made by the Kuna people of Panama. These works share common traits that incorporate maze-like designs derived from nature.

The Smith Trilogy

If You Only KnewSeptember 7 - November 3, 2018Opening Reception: Saturday, September 8th from 6-9 pm

July 6 - August 25, 2018Opening Reception: Friday, July 6th from 5-7 pm

If You Only Knew is an exhibition about revealing secrets or otherwise not-widely known information to one another. Each piece in the show will have a letter from the artist that tells something surprising, funny, heartfelt or private. For most artists, it always feels risky to share their work with an audience, but for this exhibition, participating artists have dared to make themselves even more vulnerable by writing letters directly to exhibition visitors to reveal something secret, unknown or surprising about themselves or their artwork. Join us for the opening reception to participate in this unique and interactive exchange between artist and viewer.

This exhibition is curated by J+K Isacson. (http://www.xculturearts.com)

This exhibition is about three artists, three generations, and three unique styles of art expression. Duane Smith’s legacy as an educator for over 30 years in the Freeport Public School system is well respected and his art is loved by many in this community. His work focuses on the Illinois landscape, using acrylic and pastel. His paintings are a blend of the subject, the beauty of the medium, and his imagination. Paula (Smith) Charron is Duane’s daughter, a local graduate of Freeport High School who currently works as a middle school art teacher. She creates sculptural assemblages of reclaimed treasures. She is most interested in the contrast of shape and texture that creates a visual rhythm in her work. Peter Smith is Duane’s Grandson, and he is an artist with Autism. From a young age, Peter would simply draw what he saw on TV, but with guidance from his art teacher, he began to develop his skills and apply new techniques through pen & ink, pastel, and watercolor. His work brings awareness and understanding about how art can serve as an effective avenue for self expression and communication for artists with Autism.

PAINT-THE-PORT is a family fun event where downtown streets are transformed into hundreds of squares that serve as a canvas for amateur artists of all ages.

People of all ages are invited to get creative and paint the street using washable, tempera paints provided. Together, the squares create a colorful vibrant masterpiece spanning Chicago Ave. from the future site of the Freeport Art Museum Arts Plaza to the Lindo Theater. Gather your friends and family together and get your PAINT On!

Last year, over 250 squares were painted and upwards of 600 people participated. An equal number of spectators visited downtown Freeport over the course of the weekend. The event raised $10,000 from sponsorships for facade improvement grants, which was matched 2 to 1 from the City of Freeport. Four businesses have since been awarded grants.

This year, we expect the event to grow due to its popularity so make sure to reserve your square early. Visit the event website at www.painttheport.com to keep updated on when registration becomes available.

FAM began the second year of the SmArt After School program in the Fall, thanks to the support of grants from the Freeport Community Foundation and US Bank Foundation. This multi-disciplinary program, in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club, reaches over 450 youth in the after school programs offered at the Club. Some of the activities include writing stories inspired by artwork, theatrical performance, Brazilian dance and visual arts, which together present a varied and stimulating menu of arts experiences. Students also enjoy tours at the museum with hands on activities inspired by what is seen and discussed in the galleries.

SmArt After School

The home school arts program begins its 4th year in January. This engaging art program for youth in home school programs meets on Thursday’s and Friday’s. These studio classes provide exposure to a variety of art-making media and techniques, explore art as a means of personal expression, increase awareness of how art reflects the cultures of the world through visits to the museum galleries, and relate art to other academic curriculum such as math and science. For more information contact the education director at [email protected]

Homeschool Arts Program

We are proud to join the distinguished Summer University Program at Carl Sandburg Middle School. FAM’s classes will be composed of stimulating creative activities that relate to science, engineering and math as well as cultural topics and art. Students will also enjoy visits to the museum to explore contemporary art and art from different cultures. Watch our website and that of the Freeport School District to register your child in this wonderful program.

Summer University at Carl Sandburg Middle School

Summer Artivation: Art that Activates is designed to be part of a larger effort aimed at preventing summer learning loss, otherwise known as “summer slide.” Working with our partners at the Boys & Girls Club and the NCS Youth Home, the program presents students with opportunities to become active in their community through public art projects, like creating a display of their work installed on a stop of the Tour de Freeport community bike ride event. Students also took great pride in working with Bret Whitacre, a professional mural artist, on creating a large mural in downtown Freeport that will be enjoyed for many years. Summer Artivation is sponsored, in part, by a grant from the Freeport Community Foundation.

Summer Artivation

FAM is proud to be part of the STEAM program underway at Carl Sandburg Middle School.Science, Technology Engineering Art and Math join together to bring hands on workshops to middle school students in an after school enrichment class that will run for 18 weeks. Beginning with robotics and later a solar energy project and weather balloon launch, students will learn through building and doing. Arts components introduced into the program include programming the robots to perform a dance in tandem and designing a body for the solar car using traditional clay sculpting methods from the automotive industry. Many thanks to the Freeport School District for supporting this program.
