Your Action Plan

1. Before even starting with this tutorial you must makesure you have a good grasp of finger style and slap style playing in their own right. If you need to revisit a few tutorials to brush up on either of these techniques now’s the time, as otherwise you’ll be putting the cart before the horse.

Here are a few lessons to make sure you’re brushed up and ready to go:

Slap Lesson for Beginners - http://www.scottsbasslessons.com/technique/slap-bass-lesson.html

Plucking Hand Technique - http://www.scottsbasslessons.com/technique/right-hand-technique-bass.html

2. Now it’s time to dig into this lesson. I want you to notonly be able to play this riff, but also understand it from a theoretical point of view as well. So your focus is going to be two fold.

Initially, being able to play the riff cleanly, up to speed and without rushing any elements should be your first goal. Look out for the rushing! As you move between the different styles (slapping and finger style) you will most probably tend to rush the groove slightly as you’ll feel an element of urgency while switching styles. Try to ignore this, and if anything try to be a little lazy with it. This will give it that “in the pocket” feel.

Once you can play the riff with confidence, then it’s time to start analyzing why it works from a theoretical point of view. This will give you the ability to steal certain elements and use those within your own bass lines.

3. Now I want you to come up with at least 3 different riffsof your own that incorporate both finger style and slap playing. Develop one over a major tonality, one of a minor tonality and final another over a dominant tonality.

As always, see you in the shed…
