2 Introduction

2.1 Document purpose

The purpose of a One-NDS Customer Feature Description (CFD) is to describe the

changes to the One-NDS product resulting from a new feature. The aim is to provide the

customer with sufficient information to enable them to plan for the introduction of the

feature in the upcoming release. The CFD covers only those One-NDS components that

have been affected by the feature.

2.2 High-level feature description

Status Service receives counters from One-NDS components and forwards them directly

to NetAct. Gauge and Cumulative counters are the two types of counters that are

received at SS. Gauge counters are counter values at a given point in time and

Cumulative counters are counters whose value accumulates over time. As the name

suggests, the value of cumulative counters increases over time. There are certain

cumulative counters for which monitoring the change in value over time is important to

understand the trend of the system. With the introduction of this feature, SS will provide

the delta of value for such cumulative counter values to NetAct.

After this feature is enabled, SS will calculate the delta of counter values for pre-defined

cumulative counters. The operator in NetAct defines counter collection schedule per

measurement in AOM. Based on this scheduled request, SS computes the delta of

counter values for the scheduled time intervals and reports them to NetAct. The delta of counter values is the difference between the first numerical value or the BaseValue and

the next value or the SubsequentValue of counters between two successive time

intervals.

NetAct uses the delta of counter values for several functions such as higher NetAct

functions like various PM report formats, aggregation and other PM features like

Reporting Suite, and so on.

g Delta of counter values is calculated only for Cumulative Counter Values. This is

explained in detail in New Feature Functionality section of this document.

2.3 Customer benefits

The introduction of delta of counter values support by Status Service provides the

following benefits:

• Delta values for predefined cumulative counters are available for NetAct.

• Higher level NetAct applications can be used effectively.

3 Requirements for using the feature

3.1 Software

The whole of One-NDS deployment must be upgraded to One-NDS 9 SP2 before the

feature can be enabled and activated.

Apart from installing the Delta Counters feature on One-NDS 9SP2, install the

corresponding hotfix on NetAct 15 or later versions for this feature to function.

g This hotfix is a software change on the SS server side which is co-hosted along with the

ADM software on the ADM Server. There are more than one SS in One-NDS 9SP2 and

NetAct communicates with any one of the SS at a given point in time. So it is mandatory

that the hotfix must be installed on all the ADM servers for the hotfix to be functional.

3.2 Hardware

The feature will work on all platforms and hardware supported by the One-NDS 9 SP2

release.

3.3 Firmware

Not applicable.

3.4 Supporting products

NetAct

g The corresponding hotfix of delta of counter values should be enabled on NetAct for full

functionality of NetAct PM features. Refer to NetAct Customer documentation and the

Release Notes for more information.

4 Changes introduced by the feature

The changes introduced by this feature facilitates the computation of delta values for pre-

defined counters by SS. The following list describes the changes:

• SS computes delta of values per counter for various cumulative counter values it

receives from One-NDS components such as PGW, NTF and so on and sends it to

NetAct.

• NetAct should also deploy the hotfix for this feature for the feature to function. Refer

to NetAct documentation and Release Notes for more information.

• If a counter is relevant for delta computation, that is, if it is a predefined cumulative

counter, then the aggregation would be updated accordingly.

• One-NDS captures missed measurements which are not reported to NetAct under

certain scenarios in the Audit log. Some of these scenarios are described in theRestrictions and Assumptions section of this CFD.

5 Detailed feature description

5.1 Previous functionality

Prior to this hotfix, SS did not include the functionality to compute and report delta values

of counters to NetAct.

The System Monitor 2.0 (SM2) and Generic Mediation(GM) or Generic Agents(GA) OAM

solutions were used in earlier versions of One-NDS as OAM solutions to integrate with

NetAct and other 3rd party NMS. GM continues to be used in One-NDS 9SP2 along with

Status Service (SS). SS is introduced as a new OAM solution to integrate with NetAct.

With SS integration, delta of values has to be calculated at NE side and then sent out to

NetAct.

From One-NDS 9SP2 onwards, SS will be the primary OAM component to integrate withNetAct and SS will create delta of counter value and send it to NetAct.

5.2 New feature functionality

The Support for Delta Counter Values via SS feature is introduced to achieve the

following:

• Calculation of Delta counter of values at SS and sent out to NetAct based on

requests from NetAct.

• Updated version of aggregation of delta counters.• Introduction of a new alarm to help troubleshoot faults related to SS-PM-DELTA.cfg

configuration file.

• Introduction of the new Audit log called the missedMeasurement.log file that provides

information on missing PM reporting for one or more counters. The Audit log is

available at /opt/mgtservices/statusService/logs/missedMeasurements.log

Counter Types

There are two types of counters that are reported by One-NDS components:

Counter Type Description

Gauge Gauge counter is a type of counters whose value is counter value

at a given point of time. It depicts the snapshot of counter at the

time it is reported. The measurement of these value can increase

or decrease over time. For example: Free disk space or average

CPU usage.

Cumulative As the name suggests, Cumulative counter is the type of counter

whose value accumulates over time. Its value continues to increase

within the running software. If the software is restarted, the value

resets to zero. For example: Number of successful LDAP search

operations.

Counter Type Description

g Only Cumulative counters are subject to delta calculation.

Both GA and SS solutions are available in One-NDS 9 SP2. SS can be enabled instead

of GA. SS has to calculate delta values from cumulative counters before sending it to

NetAct unlike the GA Solution where the delta values were calculated at NetAct using

the GA counter values. As GA solution reused the @com or GA counters, and as the

source XMLs of @com and SS are of the same format, the comparison is made with the

@Com counters metadata and mapped to SS counters and the delta calulations are

performed by SS. The SS-PM-DELTA.cfg configuration file contains SS cumulative

counters that are subject to delta calculation.

SS Delta Calculation

Delta compution is performed at each SS instance independently. SS collects allcounters at an interval of 1 minute. This is independent of the NetAct counter collection

interval. The NetAct interval is set via Administration of Measuremants (AOM). The SS

peers are synchronized and the result of each SS is the same when the software is

running normally. SS collects counter information regularly but performs delta

computation only when NetAct requests for it. The delta value is calculated using the

following:

Delta value = SubsequentValue - BaseValue

Where

• BaseValue is the first numerical value in that reporting interval received from the

component that will be used for the calculations.

– The BaseValue will be set first on the first request of the counter from NetAct.

– After a delta value is sent to NetAct, the new BaseValue = SubsequentValue.

– The BaseValue is the first value in that reporting interval for a particular counter

and Managed Object (MO). The One-NDS deployment is represented by a MO

with a unique identifier called a System Distinguished Name (SDN) by SS and

NetAct.

• SubsequentValue is the following cumulative value for the reporting interval from the

component after the BaseValue has been set.

• Delta value is the difference between the BaseValue and the SubsequentValue

calculated as mentioned above.

g Only those counters that are cumulative and not already delta in nature from the

underlying component are subject to Delta Calculation. A minimum of two consecutive

value in the reporting interval is required to calculate delta counter value.

Time Aggregation

The adaptation for NetAct, that is the O2ML file, allows one of the following aggregations

for counters.

• MIN

• MAX

• AVG

• SUM

• NONE

Similar attributes are present in the metadata provided by One-NDS components to SS.

A direct mapping is then done in the O2ML for the given value. As the usage of delta

counter value is dependent on the operator, One-NDS will not present the aggregation. If

the counter name exists in the configuration file SS-PM-DELTA.cfg , the

timeAggregation field has to be omitted from the O2ML for the given counter. NetAct

will then use the current default value SUM.

g The O2ML and SS-PM-DELTA.cfg file are static files in One-NDS 9 SP2. It is not

allowed to modify this file. Otherwise new added counters will not support aggregation

in NetAct. Any change to the file requires a hot-fix on NetAct.

Audit Log

Users monitoring the counters at NetAct can check for counters that are not reported for

a period of time in the Audit log.

When SS is unable to send information of a counter to NetAct, then that particular

counter information is stored in the audit log, missedMeasurements.log at

/opt/mgtservices/statusService/logs/missedMeasurements.log . Information associated

with the counters such as Group Id, reason for failure to send counter information and so

on are logged in the audit log for analysis.

Feature Activation - One-NDS

This feature is enabled by default when the hotfix is installed. The feature flag

information stored in the /opt/mgtservices/statusService/conf /ss.properties file is

modified to enable the feature.

w The ss.properties file must be edited by Nokia personnel. Contact Nokia TechnicalSupport.

If the feature is not required, it has to be disabled manually.

g Disabling the feature requires a rollback of the NetAct hotfix too. For more information

on rollback of NetAct refer to NetAct documentation and Release Notes.

Refer to One-NDS 9SP2 Release Notes for this hotfix and One-NDS 9SP2 Installation

Guide for information on the installation and uninstallation procedures.

Feature Activation - NetAct

w The NetAct hotfix should also be installed for the Support for Delta Counter Value via

SS feature to be functional after activation. Refer to NetAct documentation and Release

Notes for more information.

If the Support for Delta Counter Value via SS feature is activated, then the

time aggregation rule is applicable on NetAct and default SUM rule is used.

PM Mapping File

The mapping file information is available in Counter Mapping section of the One-NDS 9

SP2 OAM Inteface Definitions Specification Manual.

Delta Counter Configuration File

The SS-PM-DELTA.cfg is available at /opt/mgtservices/statusService/conf/SS-PM-

DELTA.cfg.. This default flat file is created at each SS locally with a list of counter ids that

needs to undergo delta calculation before being forwarded to NetAct. Data in the

configuration file is created from the metadata delivered by the One-NDS components.

The file contains following relevant attributes from the SS metadata to uniquely identify

the counter and are listed here:

• TheobjectClass for the counter, such as ADM, EXP, HOST, LDAPUSER, NDS

and so on.• ONLY FOR ExPs, the objectName. Such as EPSWX, HLRTX, HLRWX and so on.

• TheeventNumber. This is unique per family and counter.

The configuration file is part of the update/upgrade hotfix. The file is also included in the

collect-symptoms and part of the Backup and Restore (B&R) process.

Synchronization of the Delta Counter Configuration File

SS has a generic file synchronization mechanism that ensures that the file remains

consistent across all SS peers.

A change to the file on one server will trigger synchronization across the peers. On

receipt of a new file, the internal service will read the new contents into memory. On

start-up and restart of SS, the local file is read into memory for synchronization.

Comparison of Delta Calculation using GM and SS

The delta calculations for GM solution and SS are different and are explained in the

following table.

There are two significant differences between GA and SS delta counter value calculation

listed as follows:

• In GA, delta computation is carried out at NetAct and so it is possible to have a no

value. In SS, if a value is not reported, the value will be written as NULL in NetAct

database.

• In GA, delta counter value is calculated by dividing the firstvalue after missed

intervals by the number of missed intervals. In SS, delta counter value is not

reported until a minimum of two consecutive values are received. Reporting may not

be available for a few intervals if counter values are not received unlike as in GA,

where approximate/average computation was performed and delta of values was

reported even for missing delta of values. This makes delta values reported from SS

very reliable.

6 Engineering considerations

6.1 Changes in One-NDS behaviour

One-NDS is now capable of producing delta of values for cumulative counter.

6.2 Log files

The feature introduces an Audit Log file, missedMeasurements.log to capture information

on counters that are not sent from SS to NetAct for various reasons. Refer to New

feature functionality for more information.

6.3 Alarms

The feature introduces the following alarm:

8040: VALIDATION Failed For Delta Counter Configuration - The delta configuration

file SS-PM-DELTA.cfg is available at /opt/mgtservices/statusService/conf/SS-PM-

DELTA.cfg location. At the time when the feature is enabled, if the SS delta config file is

missing or empty or invalid then the Validation failed for delta counter

configuration alarm is raised. This alarm gets cleared after successful loading of the

delta configuration.

6.7 Restrictions and Assumptions

The following restrictions and assumptions apply to the delta counter values feature:

• This feature is applicable only for NetAct integrations. There is no impact on 3rd

party integrations and the SS SNMP interface.

• Dependency on NetAct - Hotfix installation order should be followed. Refer to NetAct

documentation and Release Notes for more information.

• SS-PM-DELTA.cfg file should not be modified as it is a pre-defined set and not

customizable. Any modifications will require a hotfix from NetAct and a new adaption

has to be provided.

• A missing counter instance will result in no delta value for the given interval for that

counter. Once data is received again, the BaseValue will be set and delta is

calculated at the next interval. For example, if the collection interval is 15 minutesthen for any given counter, delta value will be available after 30 minutes.

• Missed measurements will be captured in Audit log in all of the following cases:

Delta computation is TRUE and:

– When SS is in switched on for the first time or when SS is restarted.

– If there is a missing value due to node reset or if the value received from a node

is less than the current value then in bothe cases the base value is reset.

– Any other networking issue wherein the SS has not received the current value

from respective node.

• If any of the new measurements from the following list are scheduled in AOM, then

they must be unscheduled or corresponding plan must be deactivated in AOM beforeun-install/rollback of the rpm.

– NDS220000 - UnsuccDAPSec

– NDS230000 - UnsuccDAPAttr

– NDS240000 – UnsuccDAPUpdate

If these measurements are not deleted before un-intall/rollback then Esymac agent

will not start. Esymac should be restarted after deactivating/unscheduling

corresponding plan from AOM.

• Auto alarm clearance - Alarm 8040 generated due missing / invalid SS-PM-

DELTA.cfg file will follow the same AutomaticAlarmClearance rule process as

applicable to all other SS generated alarms.

• The following table attempts to describe a few scenarios and the expected behaviour of SS and NetAct after the delta of counter values feature is enabled.

Support for Delta Counters by SS has a dependency on the NetAct version 15 as there

exists a shared adaptation with NetAct that defines the counters. The corresponding

hotfix has to be installed on NetAct for the feature to function.

The hotfix is installed first on One-NDS SW and then on the NetAct. This will provide the

correction to the time aggregation rule for the given set of counters.
