  • John XXIII was pope during the turbulent 1960s when it seemed that everything was falling apart. The priesthood was in crisis, religious life was in crisis, marriage was in crisis, faith was in crisis, the church was in crisis. The pope worked long and hard hours trying to address these problems. One evening, after an exhausting day in the office, he went to his private chapel to do his daily Holy Hour before retiring but he was too exhausted and too stressed out to focus or pray. After a few minutes of futile effort, he got up and said, “Lord, the church belongs to you. I am going to bed.” Difficulties might have driven the Pope to acknowledge that the church belongs to Christ. But Jesus himself said it 2000 years ago: This passage is crucial for a proper understanding of what the church is, and our role in the church. For this is the most explicit statement that Jesus makes in the Gospels about the church. Firstly, it tells us that Jesus is the owner of the church. Neither Peter nor the disciples owns the church. Pastors and church leaders who think and act as if they own the church are like farm workers who go about posing as if the farm belongs to them. All God’s people have been called together as co-workers in Christ's vineyard, though some work as foremen overseeing others. But we do not own the church. We belong to the church. The owner of the church is Christ. Secondly, the passage tells us that Jesus is the one who builds his church. He is the master builder who has the building plan in his hands. Human co-operators are like masons and carpenters employed by the master builder to help him with the building. Our role is to listen and follow his instructions, doing our own small part in the grand design of the master. Workers who stick to their own ideas of what the building should be rather than follow the directives given by the master may find themselves working at cross purposes with the master.

If Jesus is the owner and builder of the church, where then do we come in? We come in precisely where Peter comes in. Together with Peter we are the building blocks of the church. Peter is the foundation rock and we are the pieces of stones with which the church is built. The passive voice “let yourselves be built” indicates that God himself is the builder and not us. Our role is to allow God to use us. The question we could ask ourselves today is: “How is God using me to build up his church? Am I letting God use me?” We must not forget that no matter how small a piece of stone may be, the master builder could still use it to do something beautiful. A famous stained-glass artist was commissioned to make a huge portrait for the window of the cathedral in Chartres, France. First he laid all of the pieces he was going to use out on the floor of the cathedral. Among these awesome pieces of glass was a small, clear piece about as big as a fingernail. As the stained-glass portrait was assembled, that little piece remained on the floor. Only the big colorful pieces were used. On the day of the window’s completion the entire city gathered to witness the unveiling of the portrait. The artist pulled away the cover cloth and the crowd gasped at the beauty of the colorful window glowing in the sunlight. After a few seconds, however, the crowd grew silent. They sensed that something was missing, that the portrait was unfinished. The great artist then walked over to where the little clear piece of glass lay, picked it up, and placed it in the portrait, right in the center of Jesus’ eye. As the sun hit that little piece, it gave off a dazzling sparkle. The work of art is now complete. Without the small piece the work was incomplete. In the grand design of building the church of God, each one of us could consider ourselves to be that small piece of glass – so small and yet so indispensable. That is true in our church here in Mahwah, in our pastoral life, each one of you has a role to play. We have ministries to fill up. In out Liturgical Life, we need Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Altar Servers, Singers and choir members. We need people to help in our pastoral life to visit the sick and the homebound and bring them communion, to feed the hungry by participating in Harrison House or contributing to the Center For Foor Action, we need people to help us with Stewardship, in building once again our finances by increasing your sacrifical giving or to actively involve in our fund raising events. Just like that stained glass window, without you, our church is incomplete.

Another point in the Gospel is the person of the disciple, of the instrument used by the builder. When we think of how Peter lived and died for the Lord and how the Church flourished despite his human failings, as well as those of all in Church authority who would follow him, we have to recognize the hand of the Holy Spirit in the very life of the Church. Christ gave his authority to the rock, even though every now and then those who exercise this authority let their humanity get in the way of their responsibility. Still, because we do have a concrete authority, rock-solid, we know who we are when we say we are Catholic. We know the fundamental beliefs of our faith and the basic dictates of our morals. We are so firm in our faith, that even if those in authority should give us a poor example of living the faith, we still maintain our Christianity. When leaders depart the Church or are so caught up in their humanity that they don't recognize the result of their actions, we all hurt. Yet, the Church still flourishes. Why? Because the Church is far more than individuals, it is the Body of Christ. When I think of some of the ways in which I, as an ordained leader have let my humanity get in the way of my responsibility here, and yet still witness the wonderful ways the Lord uses me for others, I have to realize that God's power is far stronger than my own limitations. After twenty eight years as a priest, I am still shocked at the way the Lord uses me despite my continual human failings. I'm sure that there are situations in your own lives that you feel the same way. I'm sure that you have all made decisions based on what your conscience is telling you. I'm sure that you recognize the Lord's presence in these decisions despite your own human failings. We, the confirmed, are entrusted with the responsibility of leading others to the Lord. We recognize that we do not do this alone. We realize that we must allow the hand of the Lord to work his wonders through us despite our human mistakes. Today's gospel reading, "You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church" leads us to make an act of faith in the Lord who uses human beings, you and me, to proclaim his wonders

  • MORE MUCH NEEDED REPAIRS, IMPROVING AND UPDATING OF OUR CHURCH OUTDATED

EQUIPMENTS AND FACILITIES (OUTSIDE THE RENOVATION PROJECT)

    My dear parishioners,

I pray to our Lord God almighty for our protection from the ravages of COVID-19 and grant the grace of healing to those who are sick. We also pray for the eternal repose of those who died due to the virus. As we were campaigning and planning for our church renovation, there are also concerns and issues as regards the equipment and parts of our buildings that we need to address sooner than later. There are things that need urgent attention to avoid bigger expense in the future. Since last year, even before the COVID-19 Pandemic, we already started to address some of them while some are being done now. Please understand that we have NOT USED any RENOVATION FUND for these much needed repairs, improvement and updating of these equipment and facilities.

The Fire Alarm system was switched to wireless connection to give us better and accurate signals. In the past, we frequently received false alarm notifications which prompted the Fire Department to respond every now and then.

We have addressed the issues of our boiler (heating system) and contracted a new company for maintenance and repairs when needed. This boiler serves both the school and church buildings.

We replaced all our lights and fixtures to LED which could save us a lot for our electric bills. We took advantage of the grant from the government which paid part of the expenses.

We have upgraded our pastoral office telephone system from old copper to new Fiber Optic line. One of the major complaint of our parishioners and staff is that you can barely understand each other during phone conversation because of static in the phone lines.

We are in the process of replacing the tile carpet to vinyl planks in our office hallway. This is a much greater stain resistance and are much easier to maintain.

We have replaced the old Air-conditioning system of the school gym to a very cost efficient one.

A new security camera system will be installed inside and outside the church and in our office alleys. This needs to be done during the renovation to hide conduits and wirings.

We have checked and tested all suspected asbestos containing materials in some areas of our buildings and checked the air quality inside our buildings for possible asbestos contamination and we PASSED WITH FLYING COLORS. NO ASBESTOS CONTAMINATION in our facilities.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED GENEROSITY that we are able to make these needed upgrading and repairs to address these problems and issues in order to minister and serve you better. I also thank in a very special way members of our

Finance Council and the Buildings and Grounds Committee for their help who actually took the initiative in making these repairs,

improvement and updating possible. This is a separate project from the renovation.

G G Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. T N C I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (all bow.) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

  • F R Isaiah 22:19-23 Thus says the Lord to Shebna, master of the palace: “I will thrust you from your office and pull you down from your station. On that day I will summon my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah; I will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and give over to him your authority. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. I will place the key of the House of David on Eliakim’s shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut when he shuts, no one shall open. I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family.” R P Psalm 138 R. Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands. I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with all my heart, for you have heard the words of my mouth; in the presence of the angels I will sing your praise; I will worship at your holy temple. R. I will give thanks to your name, because of your kindness and your truth: When I called, you answered me; you built up strength within me. R. The Lord is exalted, yet the lowly he sees, and the proud he knows from afar. Your kindness, O Lord, endures forever; forsake not the work of your hands. R.

S R Romans 11:33-36 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor? Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid? For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. Alleluia R. Alleluia, alleluia. You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against R. Alleluia, alleluia. G Matthew 16:13-20

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
