REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

To the Superintending School Cotnrnittee and Citizens of

the Town of Carmel:

I herewith submit my eighteenth annual report of the

schools of Carmel.

TEACHERS

High School: Joseph J. Devitt, Principal. Mathematics, Science. Miss Katie A. Moore, Assistant. English, Latin, French. Miss Ruth Wishart, Commercial subjects.

Grades Seven and Eight, Grades Five and Six Grades Two, Three, and Four Grades Sub-Primary and One Damascus School,

Dana P. Stevenson Mrs. Agnes E. Hand

Mrs. Nellie H. Downs Mrs. Ethel F. Simpson

Miss Anna E. O'Neil

It seems likely that the acute shortage of teachers in Maine will continue for some time. World conditions are changing so rapidly that more and more demands are made upon the schools in order to prepare youth for an unknown future. I believe every teacher in Carmel gives his best to his work. Your active cooperation is neded in order to implement the work of our schools.

The textbook and supply accounts were kept to a minimun1. New geography texts, supplementary reading material, and audio-visual aids are needed in the elementary schools.

36

SCHOOL LUNCH

The school lunch program was started last fall with the donation of Fifty Dollars from the Carmel Garden Club. We wish to exp1·ess appreciation to the Club, also to the active committee who have helped so much, and to the parents and friends who have given donations of food, etc. The Federal funds reimbursement is seven cents per child per nleal served.

REPAIRS

The grammar school building was greatly improved in appearance by outside painting. The grading on the old high school lot was completed. The Carmel School District finished the grading at the high school. The lawn now presents an attractive appearance.

HIGH SCHOOL

The nuinber of tuition students has increased 1naterially over previous years. The various activities of the high school have received your support, and Carmel High School continues to hold a high place in your community.

RECOMMENDATIONS

After carefully considering costs and the percentage of increase we may logically expect according to present conditions, the superintending school committee and I recommend that the following amounts be appropriated at the annual town meeting:

..

37

· Common Schools $5,500.00 High School 6,000.00 Repairs 500.00 Insurance 77.50 Superintendence 541.00

In closing, I wish to express my deep gratitude to all who have helped in any way in the work of the school.

Respectfully submitted,

BERTHA W. CARTER
