The annual Fleadh Cheoil Cheatharlach will take place from the 7th-9th April 2017, and this year the town of Borris Co. Carlow is hosting the festival! Come and take part in various events, including concerts, competitions, and session trails. For further details, please contact [email protected]

GRAIGUENAMANAGH TIDY TOWNS Projects in hand for 2017, subject to funding.1/. Replace wire baskets. There are about 20 wire baskets around the town. We have commissioned 25 cast

solid wall baskets that will complement the 50 planet/urns already on display. They will have the emblem of the East/West Windows of the Abby. They will be sturdy and attractive and will enhance the town long into the future.

2/. With five planter/urns already on the quay we will provide four wrap around baskets high up on the four lamp standards. We will organise an Art Competition in the National Schools to create banners to be erected on the lamp standards. This will improve the appearance of the Quay, a central area of the town.

3/. Improve the Grotto. Remove the low wall, plant two trees either side of the grotto, plant yew hedge at the back wall. Work to light the statue of BVM.

We will call our AGM in early April. Hopefully, this year, there will be engagement so that Graiguenamanagh can engage in the annual Super Valu sponsored annual Tidy Towns Competition.

One Book One Community

The One Book One Community Reading Initiative which was running in Graignamanagh since January 12th came to a close on Thursday, March 16th with a showcase of work in the Abbey Hall from students of Duiske College, Scoil Mhuire gan Smál and the Boy’s National School.

Also on display was a picture of the Titanic which was sent from Boston in 1912 to William Byrne of New Ross, Grandfather of Mary Holden, Killeen – this picture is still in Mary’s family and we are very grateful that Mary was able to bring it along to the Expo and also to the Discussion Morning in the library on February 2nd where all the students got to see this special picture which was sent four days after Titanic sank.

Ms Nicola Pierce, author of our chosen book, “Spirit of the Titanic” who returned to Graignamanagh to close our festival was truly impressed with the range and standard of work which the students had on display. Ms Pierce enjoyed her two day stay in Graignamanagh so much that she told the audience on the day that she did not want to leave and she has vowed to return to our town. Thank you to all the “friendly people” she met who made her visit so enjoyable and in particular to Brian Roberts and Annette Kelly at Waterside Guesthouse and to Maura Cahill and Mary Whelan for your hospitality. A huge thanks also to Colm Walsh who gave Nicola a very informative guided tour of Graignamanagh which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Thanks to the support, interest and encouragement of Tommy Prendergast for our reading project we applied to Kilkenny County Council for a festival grant towards the cost of running One Book One Community and we were thrilled this week to receive the good news from Councillor Peter Chap Cleere that we are to receive €500 from Kilkenny County Council. We are very grateful to Councillor Cleere and to Kilkenny County Council for this endorsement of our work. This funding means that the cost of the return visit of author Nicola Pierce and other expenses can be met without dipping again into the already over-stretched budgets of our schools. The cost of buying books for the students and the cost of activities for the duration of the initiative were paid for or subsidised by school funds, library funds and a very welcome donation of €200 from the Town of Books Committee at the start of our festival.

We have a fantastic photographic record of One Book One Community 2017 thanks to the invaluable help of Tom Walsh. Tom’s photographs of the Expo can be seen on the Duiske College Facebook page and we hope to have some projects and photographs of the different activities on display in the near future.

Finally a sincere word of gratitude to the principals, staff, parents and students of Duiske College, Scoil Mhuire gan Smál and the Boy’s National School, to the staff of Graignamanagh Library and to all the members of the wider community who supported and made a much appreciated and very valuable contribution to One Book One Community 2017 - In the words of the African proverb:

“It takes a village to raise a child”.

Graignamanagh BingoThe next Bingo is on Saturday 8th April, at 8.15pm in the Abbey Hall. We have made the decision to raise the price of the books by €1 to €6 per book and two books for €10, this was a hard decision to make but in order to keep the bingo going and to cover our costs, and hopefully make a little as the bingo is run as a fundraiser, on a voluntary basis by all involved. We hope you will continue to support Bingo in Graiguenamanagh. Hope to see you all on the 6th.
