June 28 Administration Day—No Classes K-12

You may have heard the phrase “Local Voices/Local Choices” recently. This is an initiative of the Manitoba School Boards Association (MSBA) to make the public aware of the work that School Boards do to address local priorities. Local School Boards make it possible to take into account local needs that vary from community to community.

Your School Board is your local voice in education. Continuing from last month, here are a few more local initiatives that make the Brandon School Division distinctive and that exist due to the work of your local School Board include the following:

Indigenous Education

Indigenous Education initiatives in the Brandon School Division are designed to provide assistance to Instructional and Support staff as they integrate Indigenous perspectives into their daily teaching activities.

Indigenous Language courses are offered in Grades 9-12 in Cree, Dakota, Michif, and Anishinaabemowin/Ojibway. Traditional teachings, history, culture, and spirituality are essential components of each course, and are a primary basis for students to develop fluency in their language. Classes will include a variety of interactive activities, both in-class and off-site, which will focus on developing skills in reading, speaking, and writing. Students will play an active role in these activities.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program

The IB Diploma Program is for students aged 16 to 19, and provides a challenging two-year curricula leading to final examinations and a qualification that is welcomed by leading universities around the

world. In some cases, students who participate in the IB Diploma Program will also fulfill the requirements of their province's curriculum and examination.

Joint Meetings with City Council and BSD Board

The BSD Board and City Council meet twice per year. This has established good working relationships, and through these conversations we are often able to move things along more quickly.

Neelin High School Off Campus (NHSOC)

NHSOC is an initiative of the Brandon School Division that opened its doors to the public in September of 2007. NHSOC is an alternative school setting for students who are at risk of quitting their education for a variety of reasons. Students are self-directed and work at a more flexible pace. Course requirements here are the same as they are at other Manitoba High Schools. NHSOC works well for students who require a more flexible schedule; students who work; or students who are single parents.

A new initiative at NHSOC is ExperiencED at off campus. ExperiencED is working towards decolonizing the curriculum by implementing indigenous-themed, experiential opportunities with curricular connections to enhance students’ academic achievement.

Construction at Maryland Park School is currently running on schedule. At the corner of Maryland Avenue and Ninth Street, just a few quick steps away from Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School, the new 65,660 square foot school will welcome 450 students (with ability to expand to a capacity of 675 students) in September 2020, and will also include:

a child care centre for 20 infants and 54 pre-school children;

40 nursery school spaces;

14 regular classrooms and kindergarten rooms with dedicated art, band and science rooms;

a Science, Technology, Electronics and Math (STEM) lab;

a life-skills and resource teaching and guidance suites, and an English as an Additional Language Room;

a library and gymnasium;

a home-economics lab; and

an industrial arts (manufacturing/construction) shop.

On Wednesday, May 22, 2019, our Board of Trustees and Senior Administration met with community members and presented the proposed catchment area for Maryland Park School. Feedback and recommendations were accepted by the public and will be brought forward to the Finance & Facilities Committee for their consideration and review prior to approval by the Board of Trustees.

The Green Acres Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) began in January 2019. There are currently 15 student members from Grade 5-8. The QSA has been active in the school providing educational opportunities for all students and staff.

QSA members have created positive messages supporting diversity and safety which are posted in the school. The group has researched LGBTQ information and statistics to share during morning announcements.

On April 12, 2019, in recognition of the National Day of Silence, QSA members led a three minute moment of silence to highlight LGBTQ voices silenced by discrimination and fear. QSA members have collaborated with the high school group from Crocus Plains making pride bracelets.

Green Acres QSA made their own pride t-shirts to wear during the Brandon Pride Parade which is happening in June. We are so thankful this hard-working group of young people have the desire to make a positive change in their school and community.
