Members o the Friends o theiishpay annual dues o one or ve hundred euro or join with a lietime dona-tion o one thousand ve hundred euro or more. In return, members are invited to semi-annual sessions eatur-

ing presentations oiishacquisitions and guest speakers. Tese guest speakers deliver lectures on their eld oresearch, which does not necessarily concern theiishcollection.

Te presentation and lecture are ollowed by a reception. In addition to these semi-annual gatherings, allFriends receive a orty-percent discount on iishpublications. Friends paying dues o one thousand guilders or

more are also entitled to choose Institute publications rom a broad selection ofered at no charge.Te board consults the Friends about allocation o the revenues rom the dues and delivers an annual nancial

report in conjunction with theiishadministration.Teiishwas ounded by master collector Nicolaas Posthumus (1880-1960) in the 1930s. For the past decade,

two o the institutes established by this history entrepreneur have operated rom the same premises: theneha(Netherlands Economic History Archive) since 1914 and the International Institute o Social History (iish),which is now over sixty-ve years old. Both institutes are still collecting, although the subsidiaryiishhas

Voor de hereniging tot huidige hoofdstad van Duitsland haddenbeide Berlijnen meer met elkaar te maken dan de buitenwereld voormogelijk hield. Behalve hun zeer bewogen geschiedenis van Prui-sische praal via de hel van Hitler naar een oorlogsrune deelden

Oost- en West-Berlijn een status en sfeer die afweken van die in alleandere Duitse steden. De voormalige bezetters waren prominentaanwezig, de krakers in Kreuzberg en de dissidenten in PrenzlauerBerg trotseerden de autoriteiten en wisten gescheiden door deMuur heel goed van elkanders bestaan. De Stasi begluurde de ge-hele stad en het West-Berlijnse vuilnis werd gedumpt in de DDR.De val van de Muur en de hereniging van Duitsland veranderdenveel. De samenvoeging van beide Berlijnen, die nu zo vanzelfspre-kend lijkt, kwam maar moeizaam op gang. Zeker de eerste tien jaarbleef er vooral in de hoofden een scherpe scheiding tussen Oosten West.Hans Smits vertoefde in de periode 1980-1998 vele malen in Berlijn,waar hij reportages maakte voor het weekblad Vrij Nederland. in Nederland, in woord en vooral beeld, vastgelegd. Gewone mensen vanallerlei achtergronden: mannen en vrouwen, stedelingen en plattelanders,met verschillende beroepen, verschillende godsdienstige overtuigingen enverschillende culturen. Wat waren hun verwachtingen, hun dromen en watwaren de alledaagse ervaringen? Dat vooral wil dit boek vastleggen voorhet nageslacht, waarvoor dit langzamerhand een heel ver verleden begintte worden. Tussen 1602 en 1795 voer de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie metzon vier en een half duizend schepen naar de Oost. Met deze schepenvertrokken er jaarlijks vele duizenden mannen uit de Republiek. Een deelvan deze mannen liet bij vertrek een vrouw, en soms ook kinderen, achter.Deze achterblijvers moesten in de jaren die volgden zonder echtgenoot envader het hoofd boven water zien te houden.Dit boek vertelt het verhaal van de echtgenotes van Oost-Indivaarders dietussen 1700 en 1750 aanmonsterden bij de kamer Enkhuizen. Het leven vandeze vrouwen was zwaar. Desondanks wisten de meeste zeemansvrouwenzonder de hulp van de armenzorg rond te komen. Zowel regelingen ge-troffen door de VOC als door de stedelijke overheid droegen hieraan bij.Op deze wijze werd er als het ware een vangnet gecreerd voor de veleachterblijvers in de Republiek.Deze studie werd in november 2003 bekroondmet de J.R. Bruijnprijs.
