At Charlottesville City Schools, along the pathway of learning, our students are…Preparing for a Global Economythrough World Languages• Through our elementary Spanish program, all Charlottesville School students take classes “en español” from kindergarten through fifth grade.

• After this elementary exposure to español, our sixth graders can take Spanish 1 for high school credit!

• At Buford Middle School, students can continue with Spanish, or take French or Latin.

• At CHS, students can learn French, German, Latin, and even Chinese!

• On the flip side, we also teach English to students from around the world.

• Our students put their language training in action, translating for Spanish-speaking parents at school events, partnering with the East Asia Center at U.Va., hosting students through the State Department, and making field trips to the German Embassy in DC.

Becoming Tech-Savvy• We’re a leader in virtual education, with nearly 20 classes filled for next year, including online PE!

• We host an annual Google Summit that attracts teachers from across the state (and beyond) to learn more about Google Apps for Education.

• We partner with universities, foundations, businesses, and even the Smithsonian Institute to help our students use 3-D printers, circuitry, coding, and out-of-the-box thinking.

• All students from grades three and up will receive a new Chromebook this fall, so that they have their own computer to enhance their learning.

• We’re high-tech, but we still believe in the old-school values of reading, recess, and relationships. Our schools foster a climate of caring.

Getting a Jump Start on College• Students at Buford Middle School can earn high school credit in three foreign languages, plus algebra, geometry, earth science, engineering, and more.

• CHS offers several pathways to college-level classes and experiences. Our AP program is one of the most developed in Virginia, and our students earn college credit on a very high 77% of these challenging exams. In addition, we offer almost 20 dual-enrollment classes.

• We also partner with Piedmont Virginia Community College to offer dual-degree programs. Students can graduate from high school with 60 college credit hours!

• We’re the only area school recognized by the Washington Post as a “challenging school” that encourages a wide variety of students to take AP classes.

Taking STEM-ulating Classes• With new high-tech science and engineering labs at Buford and CHS, we offer amazing exposure to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

• The CHS science club BACON (Best All-around Club of Nerds) placed 2nd in the world in the Zero Robotics tournament sponsored by MIT and NASA. In their spare time, BACON developed an award-winning robot, organized a Science Olympiad, and visited the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland.

• Professors and students at the University of Virginia conduct special science programs, projects, and clubs at all our schools, including the elementary schools.

• Our engineering classes include engineering 1 & 2, mechatronics & dual-enrollment mechatronics.

Excelling in the Arts• We lay a foundation for music and the arts at all our elementary schools.

• From elementary through high school, our artists have won statewide awards.

• Beginning in fifth grade at Walker School, students choose art, band, choir, or orchestra. What other elementary school has a jazz band?

• The Buford Orchestra was named Grand Champion at a state festival, the Buford Band has a decades-long stretch of superior ratings, and the CHS band and orchestra both brought home gold from out-of-state competitions.

• The CHS creative writing team placed third in the state!

• The Walker/Buford drama troupe performed The Wizard of Oz and CSI: Neverland, and this spring, TheatreCHS brought smiles to every face with Hairspray.

• All of our fourth-graders participate in a year-long partnership with the Richmond Ballet, and older students can audition for continued participation in this special dance program.

With an enrollment of more than 4000, Charlottesville City Schools offers six neighborhood elementary schools (preschool- grade 4); Walker Upper Elementary School (grades 5-6); Buford

Middle School (grades 7-8) and Charlottesville High School. The schools are marked by their commitment to excellence, innovation, and community. Tuition students are welcome!
