2 – ON THE RIVER

IN APRIL the club held a Sportsman Luncheon with legendary Australian fast bowler Jeff Thomson as guest speaker.

For those who attended you know how good the day was, both in funds raised and having a good time. It was a fantastic day.

The club raised a little more than $19,000 on the day thanks to the support of every ticket purchaser, product supplier and sponsor.

I cannot go past making a special mention to Anthony Bell, founder and chairman of the LOYAL Foundation.

Anthony attended the luncheon and on behalf of his foundation donated $10,000 to the club’s cause.

Anthony recognises the importance of community and the support the club provides for those with disabilities to gain access to sailing on the Noosa River and made

mention that this was the perfect fit for his foundation to support.

To Anthony and the LOYAL Foundation, the club and the Noosa Community thank you unconditionally.

Due to the success of this luncheon the club has already secured a date for the next fundraiser – Friday September 7 from 11.30am.

Tickets are $110 each which includes a three-hour premium food and beverage package with special guest speaker Australian touring car champion Dick Johnson.

It’s a great day out supporting a worthwhile cause. Funds raised at this event will go towards the purchase

of a new rescue boat for our junior and disabled sailors. See the club’s administration office for tickets or for

more information.

We’re leading Noosa in cutting out plasticsNOOSA Yacht and Rowing Club is leading the way locally in the push to end our reliance on plastic.

From July 1 the club will not only enforce the compulsory ban on plastic bags, but will stop supplying plastic drinking straws.

Club manager Ashley Little said so much plastic ended up in waterways and the club needed to be a guardian of the Noosa River.

“We need to lead the way in protecting our river,” he said.

“Our members rely on the river being clean. Sailing, fishing and rowing will benefit from our move.

“To replace the plastic straws, we will introduce a plant-based, eco-friendly drinking straw to replace the

standard size plastic straws currently used.“The existing ‘cocktail’ straw or short straw will not

be replaced and will cease being available altogether.” Mr Little said the NYRC continued to find ways help

the environment. These included:n Recycling of all cardboard;n Recycling of all glass and heavy plastics;n Investing in solar power;n Converting to energy-saving LED lighting

throughout the premises;n Introducing water-saving amenities and devices

where possible; n Cessation of plastic drinking straws;n Use of eco-friendly cleaning products.

Sportsman’s Luncheon a great success

SENIOR Sailing at Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club is always a social and enjoyable time on the beautiful Noosa River.

We have our regular Wednesday social WAGS races each week, Saturday championship races and plenty of fun themed races throughout the year.

We are proud to have a strong membership of men and women of all ages and skill levels and are a very welcoming group to visitors.

NYRC sailors not only race here at Noosa but we frequently travel away to regattas all over Queensland.

One recent ‘away’ event was the very popular Bay to Bay race from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay.

This year’s event turned out to be quite challenging for many

SAILING

Top way to spend time on the river

competitors. Seven boats and crews from NYRC competed but on only two made it across the finish line.

Many in the fleet were severely damaged in the high winds.

The two boats to finish did well in their respective classes, with Frank Schoonderbeek’s Farr Out winning his class division and Chris Annear’s Culture Shock achieving a commendable placing.

Repairs and maintenance are being carried out on the vessels to get them seaworthy again so we can enjoy the autumn and winter series of races.

Skippers and crews are now looking forward to the slightly calmer weather usually experienced during our short winter.

Youth sail and Sailability are working through their scheduled training and racing programs after a highly successful inter-school regatta utilising the club Vagabonds.

Our club will be hosting the South Queensland Instructors Conference over the June 30-July 1 weekend.

Casual crewing positions are usually available, so anyone visiting, with basic sailing experience is welcome to come along to the club an hour or more before starting time on a Wednesday or Saturday to see if a crewing position is available.

WELCOME to the June quarterly edition of the club’s newsletter.

It’s hard to believe we are approach-ing the halfway mark of 2018 already.Even though the year is flying through, it’sthis time of year that makes me feel so appreciative that I live in this part of the world.

Winter in this region showcases why we are the envy of the rest of the world. We are certainly blessed to live in this sought after climate combined with such captivating landscapes.

The club continues to receive consistent trading with a continued shift to local support.

While we are in a major tourism hub, our valued members and locals are dominating the club’s trading. This is key to the club’s ideals, and continued local support shows the club is providing what the local community is looking for.

After more than 12 months’ discussion, I am pleased to announce that the front entrance rebuild is officially underway.

The successful builder from the tender process is local builder Chris Smith Constructions.

Between June and early December the club will have renovations taking place which involves an entirely new and reconfigured front entrance with incorporated reception area.

Check out the architect’s drawings provided above.

The tired front stairs and lift that have served the club well for many years will be replaced with an expanded and modern design that also allows for a staffed reception area to comply with current liquor licencing requirements.

There will be interruptions to some normal

activities and venue access. I ask the members, their guests and visitors alike, for patience and flexibility throughout these renovations. While there will be temporary access changes, full club facilities and benefits will not be affected.

It is said that a business is only as good as its staff and that is certainly the case with the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club.

The staff here at the club are the most amazing group of people that I have had the privilege of

working with in almost 20 years of club industry experience.

Yes, it’s a member’s club, and the club is here for the members first and foremost, however, you will struggle to find a club that has staff that serve you better in every way than that of the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club.

So, to the hard-working team at the club, I thank you for your efforts, your passion for the club, your humour and your camaraderie.

It makes for an easy drive to work each day when I know you are here and I know the members and visitors feel the same way.

As the saying goes, we are the biggest little club on the Coast.

FISHING CLUB

Windy conditions cut back April trip

WITH the windy weather continuing we finally fished on April 22, a seven-hour trip reduced to five hours because of the rough seas.

We stayed in Laguna Bay with no local boats venturing out and fished Hall’s Reef off the North Shore Camping Ground. We had an exciting time with mackerel, shark and some nice reef fish coming on board.

We all took fish home with Mandy Webb making her return after shoulder and eye surgery and new member Rob Wahl hauling in some good mackerel.

Lloyd Dumas, one of our club’s stalwarts, landed the best reefie, a 1.6kg sweetlip.

We had to cancel the recent five-hour charter with big seas whipping up on the Saturday night. This trip was rescheduled for Sunday June 3.

Our next trip was a midweek nine-hour charter on Wednesday May 23. To finalise this quarter, we fish again on Sunday June 24, another nine-hour outing.

The committee ladies and helpers put on a great spread at our annual seafood lunch with our raffle supplier providing sashimi, prawns, oysters, and hot fish and chips.

With about 50 members and partners attending it was another good day on the river bank opposite Cloudsley St. New member Rod Andrew and wife Cherry came along and met the crew. A few drinks were consumed and a lot of fishy stories told.

On the fundraising scene, we have continued our Thursday night seafood raffle at the Yachtie and it continues to be well received.

Thanks to the club staff for their support. We had a busy week with Davo’s Tackleworld BBQ

on the Saturday before the seafood lunch, and on the Thursday, eight of us did split shifts to give our main BBQ team a break at Bunnings.

It’s still very hot there in the afternoon. Thanks to Hank Beverdam and Roz Tyson who gave up their time to help.

Our raffle prizes were drawn at 3pm by Bunnings staff and John Holeszko is contacting the three winners with their Seafood and Yachtie-breakfast-for-two vouchers. We sold 200 tickets.

See you all on the water soon.

JUNE-AUGUST 2018 – 5

THE school year is flying by and already we have completed Term One sailing with just under 100 program sessions completed during the school term.

We have followed this during the Easter break with a Start Sailing 2 course, 10 days of Holiday program and a week-long Tackers program.

It is exciting to see the smiles and sense of achieve-ment that sailing brings regardless of age or ability.

Noosa Marine Race SeriesTHE final day of racing for the 2018 Noosa Marine Race series was followed by a BBQ and presentation of trophies.

Julian Griffiths of Noosa Marine was on hand to award certificates and prizes to the winners and participants.

The prizes were donated by Noosa Marine and the winner of each division received a beautiful wooden trophy handcrafted by the crew at the Men’s Shed.

These were made out of timber recycled from the old decking of our jetty.

The overall winner was Django Ward sailing Sabot Home Brew. Lasers: 1st Rylie Sinclair, 2nd Lewis Taulier, 3rd Darcy Mair. Sabots: 1st Django Ward, 2nd Morgan Cole-Jones, 3rd Lachlan Sinclair and Pearl Ward. Green Fleet: 1st Daniel Nix, 2nd Joshua Nix and 3rd Ivy Auger.

A big thanks to all the volunteers, parents, participants and Noosa Marine for their generous support.

SailabilityTHE 2018 Sailability season is underway.

Sailability co-ordinator Ken Plunkett has rallied the volunteer and participant groups together each Thursday morning under the marquee on the lawn at the front of the clubhouse.

Each week from March until the end of September this group of 20-plus enjoy the experience of sailing and the off-water camaraderie provided by this fantastic program.

Stratogen Inter-schools Regatta 2018NOW in its 20th year the Stratogen Inter-schools regatta has cemented its spot with the local schools looking to add their name to the honour board.

Planning was well underway with the regatta scheduled for late May 2018.

ThanksOUR Youthsail program continues to enjoy support from so many groups and individuals.

A big thanks to all those who help make this a great place to enjoy sailing from.

The Men’s Shed recently refurbished a second Sabot and handcrafted some timber trophies recycled from the re-decking of the western jetty adding a little piece of Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club history to an already special event. – Scott Sinclair

Strong support for Sailability programTHE autumn season of the Sailability Program is running successfully with strong support from the major disability service providers and a growing number of independent sailors.

The current season runs until the July school holidays.

The beach wheelchair and matting purchased earlier in the year is working well and is improving the efficiency of assisting sailors on and off the water.

A regular group of instructors and volunteers are contributing to the success of the programme.

We are very appreciative of the Club management arranging the Sportsman’s Lunch event which contributed a much needed financial support for the ongoing programme.

Several sailors with a disability will be holding a demonstration sail during the Noosa Come Together Festival on June 9 and 10. – Ken Plunkett

NOOSA Yacht and Rowing Club board member Peter Watson has taken part in the FISA World Rowing Tour in Spain.

The tour, from May 13-20, was held off the Costa Brava in Catalonia just north of regional capital Barcelona.

It was a tough assignment for Peter, as participants had to row 20-30km per day, sometimes in precarious conditions.

“We have had a great trip although the first day was problematic. We had three-metre swells and wind gusting from 20-30 knots,” he said.

The Coastal Rowing Australia’s Noosa group has had some great rowing recently after the winds and rains.

We had great rowing in May with calm winds and crystal clear water. On Saturday May 12 the bar looked a treat and we were able to go out into Laguna Bay and surf a couple of waves home.

On Sunday May 13, we took seven visitors to Noosa out for a rowing experience. They were a little hung over from the night before but they rowed well with little instruction. We left them having coffee on the deck.

ROWING

THE Noosa Rowing Club members have built on their success at the recent Northern Rivers Masters Championships with another medal haul at the Queensland Masters.

In a superb effort at the Wyaralong Rowing Centre, Noosa’s Dianne Crouch took out the state single Masters women’s scull final.

Crouch then teamed up with Rachel Mecham in the G-K double scull final for gold.

Noosa with Crouch on board also won the final of the women’s G-K Quad. Her crew-mates were Kerrie Cooney, Rachel Mecham and Linda Grams.

Silver was the pay-off for the Noosa mixed quad scull crew where Crouch was a member alongside Michael Robinson, John Edginton and Rachel Mecham.

In the women’s masters E double scull final the Noosa crew of Jo

Medals galore at Masters

Emerson and Rachel Mecham took bronze.

Jackie Hellwig also won a bronze in the women’s B Grade single scull, missing out on silver by just over a second.

The club warmed up for the Masters in perfect conditions both on and off the water at the Northern Rivers Masters Tweed River at Murwillumbah.

The biggest winner of the day was Crouch with gold in both her single scull race and the women’s D-K double scull with Rachel Mecham

and silver in the women’s D-K quad alongside Linda Grams, Rachel Mecham and Kerrie Cooney.

Michael Robinson and Jackie Hellwig won a silver in the mixed Masters double scull in the club’s first race for the day.

In their debut race Jo Emerson and Anna Norelius came a close third in the women’s A-C double scull.

“It is a very exciting result,” said Noosa Rowing Club coach Darryl Gerson.
