Class of ’86 set to take place among antique autosIf anything reminds

us of the passage of time, it is the latest batch of vehicles that now are 25 years old. This makes them eligible to partici-pate in an Antique Auto-mobile Club of America car show.

Here, then, are the members of the Class of 1986. Get ready — you’re about to feel a lit-tle older.

Acura Integra: Acura augmented their flag-

ship sedan with the Inte-gra, which was based on a Honda Civic, but was much more expensive. This ensured volume and profits. But the Inte-gra was one hot ride.

Acura Legend: Acu-ra was the first Japa-nese luxury brand. At more than $20,000, the Legend shattered ste-reotypes, permanently establishing Japanese automakers in the U.S. market.

Cadillac Eldorado: The new Eldorado and

its siblings, the Buick Riviera and Oldsmobile Toronado, were smaller, blandly styled and not as well made as their pre-decessors. Sales plum-meted.

Chevrolet Corvette convertible: As Con-gress considered rollover standards for cars, GM got nervous and killed its convertible mod-els. The threat passed, and the Corvette drop-top returned for the first time since 1975.

Ford Aerostar: Hen-

ry Ford II vetoed Ford President Lee Iacocca’s minivan proposal in the 1970s. Lee took the idea with him to Chrysler in 1978. Ford built its first minivan three years after Chrysler’s.

Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable: Created during financial difficulties, the daring Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable made aerodynamic styling mainstream and became America’s top-selling sedans for years.

Honda Accord: Honda

continued its conquest of America with the third-generation Accord. Three inches longer for 1986, its thrifty four-cyl-inder engine produced up to 98 or 110 horse-power.

Mazda RX-7: Once known for its rotary engines, Mazda elimi-nated the thirsty pow-erplants in every car except one: the RX-7. A fully independent sus-pension and 2+2 model were notable additions.

Mercedes-Benz

300E/300D: Mercedes-Benz’s redesigned mid-size line received state-of-the art features that were unique then, but common now: driver’s airbag, anti-lock brakes and headlamp washers.

Toyota Celica: The Celica lost its sharp edg-es when it switched from rear-drive to front-drive. A double-overhead-cam, four-cylinder engine pro-duced up to 135 horse-power.

QUESTION: Is there any reason why I can’t buy a good full-sized tire and wheel and keep it in the trunk, instead of having to use that little doughnut temporary spare? I had one fail once and I don’t think they are safe.

—Cal Sherman, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

ANSWER: No, no rea-son, if you don’t mind the extra weight and the room it takes up. Just be sure to secure the spare in the trunk. There is usually some

electrical wiring and such back there, and it can be damaged by a tire and wheel that is bouncing around loose.

Q: Can you explain the difference between a turbo and a super-charger, and is one is better than the other?

—Carlos

A: The end result is the same: to get more power from an engine, without increasing the size of it. And the meth-od is essentially the same – to force a gas-air mixture into the engine under pressure, making the engine work harder to burn it, thus increas-

ing horsepower. But the supercharg-

er uses a pump to cre-ate that pressure that’s typically driven by a belt or a gear powered by the engine. The tur-bocharger creates pres-sure using the already-burned exhaust gas that is coming out of the engine to turn the blades of a fan that forc-es the mixture into the engine.

Oversimplifying, the supercharger is good because the horsepower boost is there immedi-ately, while the turbo-charger takes a moment to “spool up” from the exhaust gas. But the supercharger takes

power away from the engine, and the tur-bo doesn’t. One knock against turbos: Re-using that exhaust gas creates a lot of under-hood heat. And almost always, you need to use premium gas on tur-bocharged or super-charged engines.

There are kits to add a supercharger or turbo to many popular engine models, such as the Honda Civic or Maz-da Miata. Check ads in sports car publications like “Grassroots Motor-sports” magazine. But if your car is still under factory warranty, add-ing one will likely void it.

Addressing a problem with heater in a 2001 MercuryQuestion: I have a

2001 Mercury Villager with 169,000 miles on it that has begun to heat intermittently, especial-ly on cold-er days. Some-times the heater blows warm air and sometimes cold air. When it’s warmer outside, it blows warm air pretty consistently. Could it be the heater core or water pump?

Also, when it is very cold outside I get a nasty squealing when I start it up, which lasts a few seconds or up to a min-ute or so. I think this is related to the pow-er steering because the steering is “stiff” briefly. Also, when it is cold and I make a sharp turn, it

will squeal during the turn and sometimes for a minute or two after. Is this the belts slipping and needing tightening, or am I looking at some-thing more substantial to replace?

Answer: Have you checked the coolant level in the radiator yet? Low coolant — for whatev-er reason — will cause intermittent or low lev-els of heat for the cab-in. In cold weather, low coolant may not cause overheating due to the convection cooling of the engine as cold air flows through the engine com-partment.

With the cooling sys-tem properly filled and the heat set to the high-est temperature, moni-tor the temperature of the heater hoses to and from the heater core —

they both should be hot to the touch. If one is significantly cooler than the other, they may be a problem with coolant flow through the heat-er core. But since you get normal heat some of the time in cold weath-er, the heater core is an unlikely suspect. Ditto the water pump.

If there’s a significant loss of coolant, find out where it went — exter-nal leak, intake mani-fold gasket, cylinder head gasket, cracked cylinder or head.

If the cooling system is full, try bleeding any air trapped in the sys-tem by warming up the engine from cold with the radiator cap in the first notch/non-pres-surized position or by cracking open the high-est fitting or hose con-

nection in the system with the engine held at a fast idle.

Regarding the belt squeal, a very short squeal upon start-up is not unusual. Drive belts, whether V-style or multi-ribbed serpentine, have an interesting charac-teristic: They actually shrink or tighten slight-ly when heated by slip-ping — sort of a self-cor-rective property.

A worn, frayed or loose belt, “soft” or loose ten-sioner, or debris buildup on a pulley can promote slipping at start-up, as can excess drag from the power steering pump. Try adding a power steering fluid condi-tioner such as SeaFoam Trans-Tune to the res-ervoir — or completely flush and refill the sys-tem — check the belt

tensioner, inspect the belt carefully for wear or damage and clean the pulley surfaces with an aerosol “brake” clean.

Q: I have a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruis-er with 99,000 miles. On cold mornings, the brakes feel hard for the first couple of applica-tions. After four or five pumps they feel normal and work fine. I don’t believe the brake fluid has ever been changed. What would you recom-mend?

A: My maintenance schedule for every vehicle I’ve owned has included bleed-ing the brake system to exchange 100 percent of the brake fluid every two years. This removes any moisture in the fluid that could lead to corro-

sion and brake problems. In subzero tempera-

tures, a very stiff/hard brake pedal upon first start-up can be caused by moisture freezing in the vacuum hose or the check valve supply-ing engine vacuum to the power brake boost-er. I suspect this is what you’re experienc-ing. Flush, clean, dry or replace the hose and valve. n Paul Brand, author of “How

BEIJING — Nothing like being told you can’t to make you want.

It was only after the Bei-jing municipal government last month announced reg-ulations to severely limit the number of automobiles in the gridlocked, smog-covered capital that Guo Jian, a burly 38-year-old salesman of eyeglass frames, decided that he really did need a car.

No matter that he doesn’t know how to drive. Guo bicycled over to the motor vehicle bureau to enter a newly instituted lottery for a coveted Beijing license plate. If he succeeds in getting one of the 20,000 plates to be issued this month, he’ll plunk down about $30,000 — that would be in cash, he says with an immodest grin — to buy the Toyota Camry he’s been eyeing.

“I’ve been getting to that stage in life where I want to have a car. I was think-ing about it for a couple of years, but I’ll admit — when they changed the law, that was what got me to pull the trigger,” said Guo as he filled out his form.

More than ever, Bei-jingers want their own set of wheels — that would be four wheels, please — and newly imposed restrictions on car ownership have only further whetted their appe-tites. In one 24-hour peri-od just before the stricter regulations took effect, up to 160,000 cars were sold, many of them to people who didn’t have driver’s licenses.

“It has become a mania of sorts,” said Jia Xin-guang, an independent automobile industry ana-lyst based in Beijing. “All Chinese admire the Amer-ican way of life, and just like Americans, they feel

they want their house as well as their own car.”

A study last year by IBM of 20 large cities put Bei-jing neck and neck with Mexico City for the worst traffic in the world. Beijing is girded by concentric ring roads that feel like nooses strangling the city dur-ing peak traffic hours. It is not uncommon for trucks headed into the city to be backed up for days. One epic jam in August lasted nine days, and during a rainy Friday in September, the capital almost came to a standstill, prompting concerns from the Politbu-ro about how the govern-ment of the world’s most populous country could function if nobody could move.

Under pressure to fix the problem, the government is now limiting the num-ber of new license plates in Beijing to 240,000 per year — about one-third of the number of plates issued in 2010 — to be awarded through the lottery sys-tem. Only long-term Bei-jing residents may register cars in the city, and cars with out-of-town plates can’t enter, a measure as drastic as if New York banned the bridge-and-tunnel crowd.

The new rules were announced Dec. 23 at a 3 p.m. news conference and took effect at midnight.

That left just nine hours for people to stampede to the automobile show-rooms.

A blogger for a popular forum on the Web portal Sohu.com recalls viewing the news conference live online; and by 3:30 p.m. starting to call for advice on how to buy a car. As soon as she got off work, she asked a colleague to drive her to a dealership. At 9:38 p.m., she had the keys to a Peugeot 307 after using her credit card to

pay the $19,000 price in full. Even as she left the shop at 10:30 p.m., others were streaming in to buy before the deadline.

Seeing it as their last chance to own a car, some people took desperate mea-sures. At a BMW show-room, according to a report in the Xinmin Weekly, a buyer used a key to scratch a brand-new car and then announced, “No one wants this car anymore, right? Then I’ll take it!”

You Zongyun, a Honda dealer, boasted of having “three months of sales in the month of December alone.” He said Novem-ber was almost as strong because “people had heard the rumors, so even before they got confirmation, there was a rush to buy.”

Demand under the new lottery system is even more keen. For the first allotment of 20,000 license plates to be hand-ed out this month, there are 210,178 applications, according to the govern-ment.

But even well before the new restrictions, the Bei-jing car craze was moving full speed ahead.

Car registration in the capital has increased to 4.8 million from 2.8 million since 2005, with 700,000 new cars registered in the last year alone.

Since the 2008 Sum-mer Olympics, Beijing officials had tried less drastic measures than the lottery, including a bicycle-sharing program, specially designated bus lanes and a rotating sys-tem that bans passenger cars from being driven one day a week depending on their plate number.

New public transit initia-tives are also underway. In late December, for exam-ple, Beijing opened five new subway and rail lines.

But Beijing’s transit

system is not nearly as well-designed as the one in Shanghai, which has a larger population but just one-third of the number of cars. (Shanghai has imposed limits since the 1980s on the number of autos that can be regis-tered in the city and sells license plates through an auction system.)

Besides the increased traffic in Beijing, the run on car sales has resulted in such practical problems as where to park the vehi-cles.

Wu Caibao, a university administrator who bought a red Chevy in April, said the problem just keeps intensifying. “So many of my neighbors have bought cars recently that I have to come home early from work just to find a place to park.”

In 2009, China sur-passed the United States as the largest automo-bile market in the world. Across the nation, sales of passenger cars rose 33 percent in 2010 over the previous year, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reported. Chinese economic policies are designed to nurture domestic automakers and make car ownership acces-sible to people who half a generation ago thought themselves lucky to afford a bicycle. The Chery QQ, for example, sells for about $4,500.

As a result, new cars clog Beijing streets, many of them cheap, Chinese-made mini-cars that come in eye-catching shades such as magenta, lime green and persimmon. There’s even a black-and-white-model called the panda (the big, round headlights suggest China’s favorite endan-gered species) along with a luxurious assortment of new-model BMWs, Mer-cedeses and Audis.

Lottery accelerates car mania in Beijing Automobile’s own technology be a distraction

Just like cellphones, cars are getting more high-tech, with dash-board navigation systems, touch-screen climate con-trols and often hundreds of satellite radio channels to scroll through.

Automakers have been working with the National Highway Traf-fic Safety Administration as it drafts guidelines to reduce distractions from in-car technology. The first phase of the guide-lines is expected this fall.

Members of the Alli-ance of Automobile Manu-facturers, which includes most major automakers except Honda, agree to follow their own proce-dures for “information and communication sys-tems” to reduce distrac-tion. The Association of International Automobile Manufacturers, which represents 15 import-ed automakers, says its members make their own decisions on in-car dis-tractions.

Consumer Reports said this month that the touch-screen computer standard in many Ford models to control the radio, temperature and navigation was “overly complicated and distract-ing” and dropped its rec-ommendation of models with it. Last fall, Trans-portation Secretary Ray-mond LaHood criticized General Motors’ OnStar communication system for allowing people to ver-bally update their Face-book or Twitter status while driving.

The department’s own research showed talk-ing to passengers was the leading distraction in 7,000 crashes NHT-SA studied last year, but it says a conversation involves only “cognitive” distraction, while other activities, such as texting and presumably interact-ing with your dashboard, involve a more dangerous combination of “manual, visual and cognitive” dis-traction.

AAM’s guidelines say drivers should not have to look away for more than two seconds at a time or a total of 20 sec-onds to complete a task. “Entertainment systems” were grandfathered in because people have been changing the radio for decades.

What some automak-ers are doing:

BMW: Navigation con-trols can be used while the car is moving and were tested using driving simulators. Drivers with BlackBerry devices can also now read three lines of their e-mail through the cars’ computer screens; the rest is read aloud by the computer.

Hyundai: Voice-acti-vated navigation systems with a backup operator will be on two 2012 mod-els. Hyundai customer satisfaction director Bar-ry Ratzlaff says using a touch-screen navigation system while driving is as safe as a touch-screen radio and far safer than reading printed directions or doing what his father used to do when he got lost: Stop in the middle of the road.

How do you know when to replace belts and hoses?Question: How do

I know when it’s nec-essary to replace my belts and hoses? My oil change/tune-up place told me I should do this now but my car has only 47,800 miles and is a 2005. I looked at them and the rubber still looks good. I checked my owner’s manual, and it doesn’t say anything about replacing these parts, only inspecting. What is the best thing to do?

Answer: I’d agree you’re in the mileage/time range to consid-er replacement. Under favorable conditions, belts and hoses could last twice this long, but what’s important here is protecting your engine

and averting a common cause of vehicle break-down. Here’s why belts and hoses need to be taken seriously: Many modern automotive and light truck engines use a single serpentine belt to run the engine’s accessories. These are the water pump (vital-ly important for engine cooling), alternator (pro-vides electrical power for the entire vehicle), power steering pump (allows much easier steering), air condition-ing compressor (provides cool air and defrost-ing assist), and possibly an air injection pump (an emission control device). Some engines drive the water pump via the much sturdi-er and separate timing belt, or directly by the

cam shaft. In this case a failed serpentine acces-sory drive belt would be much less of a concern.

Should an aging single serpentine belt break, one would imme-diately feel the steering become very stiff, and the red battery warn-ing light would come on. With all this occurring, you probably wouldn’t notice the lack of A/C or a soon to illuminate check engine light. If your water pump is driven by the serpen-tine belt, it’s impera-tive to get off the road right away and shut the engine down to pre-vent engine overheat-ing. Without coolant cir-culation, localized hot

spots (typically in the cylinder head area) will soon cause grave dam-age. If necessary, the vehicle could be driven a few blocks at a time, with a five-ten minute engine-off cool down period between, to get to a safer or more desired location.

Cooling system hoses typically degrade from the inside out, making proper inspection dif-ficult. A small split in a hose isn’t serious, as long as it’s noticed and corrected, perhaps with a day or two. The big concern is maintaining enough coolant to keep the engine safe. A larg-er failure could cause a rapid loss of coolant and

big trouble to emerge within 5-10 minutes if corrective action isn’t taken.

I don’t mean to scare you with these possi-bilities and help your mechanic make his boat payment. I’ve seen more than a few cas-es of seemingly inno-cent neglect cause really expensive and avoidable failures, and it’s trou-bling. A badly overheat-ed engine is one of the most unpredictable and problematic things one can repair, tempting a repair shop to recom-mend an engine replace-ment, rather than to risk a nobody-wins comeback due to unfore-seen repair issues.

Renewing belts, hos-es and coolant now, or within the next year

would be a good idea. Everyone you talk to will have differing opin-ions on this. By renew-ing the parts, you’d spend perhaps $200 to buy piece of mind regarding breakdowns, and stand the best chance you can, along with periodic oil chang-es, of averting a possible $3,000 to $8,000 engine failure. Newer engines are trickier and more costly to fix, and much less forgiving of acciden-tal abuse than the cast iron Ford 390 I drove as a kid.

Auto companies recalled about 20 million vehicles in 2010There’s no denying it:

2010 was the Year of the Recall. Not just automotive recalls — Kellogg’s recalled 28 million boxes of cereal and McDonald’s recalled 12 million Shrek glasses. But it was the recalled cars and trucks that made big news across Florida, and the rest of the country.

Auto companies recalled about 20 million vehicles in 2010, led by Toyota’s seven million. That’s near-ly twice the 11.5 million new vehicles sold last year.

But automotive recalls are not created equally. Some can be for a minor annoyance, while others can be for possible defects that make the vehicle unsafe to drive. The major-

ity are in that first catego-ry, but even those should be addressed. Typically, about one-fourth of own-ers who receive a recall notice never bother to get the vehicle fixed.

I f your veh icle is recalled, you should be notified by mail, a process that can be annoyingly slow. You may hear about a recall of your vehicle in the news, but it may be weeks before you receive the actual notice. Be aware too that once a problem is discovered, a manufac-turer may have to design a part and have it manu-factured, which slows the process, too. That hap-pened with the Ford truck recall of faulty cruise con-trol switches that could cause a fire. For the ini-tial recall, dealers were

simply disconnecting the switch, then asked cus-tomers to return when the switches finally became available.

When you get the notice, contact your dealer. By law it does not have to be the dealer that sold the car originally, but dealers may move their own customers up in the line. If you have the work done by an inde-pendent mechanic, and not a dealer, you may end up paying for the repairs yourself.

If you are not the origi-nal owner, or you are look-ing for a used vehicle, it’s a good idea to search the National Highway Trans-portation Safety Admin-istration database to see if your vehicle has been recalled, and if so, for what. Once you know

that, a dealer can check your vehicle’s identifica-tion number and see if the recall had been addressed. The NHTSA web site is http://www.safercar.gov.

Keep in mind, too, that your vehicle may be affected by what is called

a Technical Service Bul-letin, or TSB, which many consumers confuse with a recall. These bulletins typically do not address safety or emissions issues, and they are more a way to let dealers know what may be causing specific prob-

lems in a certain vehicle. Sometimes the manufac-turer will mail an owner a notification of a TSB, but not always.

Finally, know that just because a certain make, model and year of vehicle is recalled, it may or may not include your vehicle. Sometimes a problem only occurs in a few vehicles that, for example, were built with a faulty batch of parts. Also, depending on where you live, some recalls may address prob-lems that you don’t face— such as issues related to very hot or cold weather.

If there is an upside to recalls like the ones that affected Toyota, it’s that the recalls have given deal-ers a chance to enhance their reputation for taking care of their customers.

By Steven Cole SmithThe OrlandO SenTinel Who Won?

if there was a winner in the Year of the recalls, it appears to be Ford, which recalled about 500,000 vehicles in 2010, far less than Toyota’s seven mil-lion. according to the Consumer reports 2011 Car Brand Perception Survey, buyers have increased confidence in Ford quality, while confidence in Toy-ota has slipped. “While the two car companies are in a statisti-

cal dead heat,” the report said, “Ford excels in the factors that consumers say matter most: safety, quality and value.” This likely helped Ford’s 2010 sales figures,

which were up about 19 percent, the most of any full-line automaker. Will it last? We’ll see how the recall story carries into 2011.

Strong sales, new products help boost car dealers’ optimism

DALLAS — Not even January’s deep chill could slow the surging auto industry.

In what is typically a frigid, unfriendly month for automakers, retail sales of new cars and trucks in the U.S. grew an impres-sive 25 percent — includ-ing a 33 percent jump for General Motors Co. and a 58 percent increase by Chrysler Group LLC.

“If we can have this kind of business in Janu-ary, I can hardly wait for March,” said Ray Huffines, CEO of Plano, Texas-based Huffines Auto Dealerships, which includes Chevrolet, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Hyundai, Kia and Suba-ru stores.

The increase last month follows 11 percent growth in December, which ana-lysts say bodes well for

sales the remainder of the year.

In previous recessions, automobile sales generally tracked housing activity, with the two rising and falling together. But now autos are leaving housing in the dust.

“Housing is down and showing no signs of com-ing back,” said George Hoffer, a business pro-fessor at the University of Richmond who follows the industry. “In reality, the auto industry in recent years has moved to its own drumbeat.”

With the growth in Jan-uary, some automakers and analysts are push-ing up their earlier esti-mates that new-vehicle sales will rise 8.5 percent this year.

Several sources now expect total U.S. sales to top 13 million. IHS Auto-motive, for example, boost-

ed its forecast from 12.8 million to 13.1 million, and Ford and GM each predict 13.3 million in industry sales, up 500,000.

“Dealers, like most busi-nesses, are looking for con-sistency in the economy,” said Lee Chapman, pres-ident of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan New Car Dealers Association. “Each month seems to pick up a little more steam. Six months ago, we could be up one month, down the next.”

Many buyers today are replacing old vehicles. The average car or truck in the U.S. is more than 8 years old and has about 100,000 miles on it, according to various studies.

In addition, automakers are offering an array of highly attractive new vehi-cles — such as the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Cru-ze, Hyundai Elantra and

Jeep Grand Cherokee — just as the economy is stir-ring again. Through the credit companies they own, most automakers can also finance the purchases.

“When you get an eco-nomic recovery with lots of new products, sales go bon-kers,” Hoffer said. “They feed on each other.”

Moreover, the resur-gence in sales has bene-fited domestic manufactur-ers more than the imports, mostly because the rebuild-ing domestics have more all-new vehicles in their showrooms.

“I’d like to think we were up 10 percent or so last month,” said Rusty Wallis, who owns Rusty Wallis Honda in Dallas and Rusty Wallis Volkswa-gen in Garland, Texas. “I think a lot of people are still worried about losing their jobs. But I feel more optimistic this year than

I did in ’09 and ’10.” At the Huffines dealer-

ships, new-vehicle sales were up 65 percent in Jan-uary.

“Everyone’s really opti-mistic,” Huffines said. “If you add up all the projec-tions of manufacturers, we’d have a 20 million (vehicle) industry if they were all right. There’s no doubt there will be some pretty good deals.”

In fact, the growing com-petition among the biggest players in the auto indus-try should keep sales rel-atively high if a price war breaks out.

The possibility of an all-out battle concerns Sam Pack, an influential Ford dealer who owns four stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. As manufac-turers get more aggres-sive, offering $199 monthly payments on some vehi-cles, dealers’ already thin

margins may get squeezed, he says.

“And I think this will be a year when we see some very aggressive market-ing,” Pack said.

GM, Toyota and Hyundai have the resources to offer big incentives on their vehi-cles, he said. GM began a promotion this month that allows most people with GM leases to waive their last three payments if they buy new vehicles.

The Detroit automaker, apparently eager to rebuild its customer base after its bankruptcy 18 months ago, also raised incentives 16 percent in January to an average of $3,663 per vehi-cle, according to Autodata Corp., the highest among U.S. automakers.

GM denies that it is slid-ing back into bad practic-es, but the high incentives have the industry buzz-ing.
