Hybrid technology soon to be inescapableYour next car will probably have

a little bit of Toyota Prius or Chev-rolet Volt in it, whether you think of yourself as a high-tech fuel sav-er or not. Technologies pioneered by the 50-mpg Prius and the Volt, which burns no gasoline at all on most trips under 40 miles, will soon be omnipresent.

Virtually every car will be a hybrid, with so many variations of electric-assistance that some manufacturers won’t even use the word.

It’s a challenge for automakers.

They’re struggling with how to tell buyers about the new features, which will increase fuel economy in a variety of ways.

“Customers think ‘hybrid’ means the Prius,” a car mostly powered by gasoline but capable of driving on battery power alone for short distances at low speeds, said Jim Hall, managing director of 2953 Analytics. “That’s very simplis-tic.”

Technology that uses electricity to reduce petroleum consumption can already be found in everything from the battery-powered Nissan Leaf to the 414-horsepower twin-turbo BMW M3’s automated stop-

start system. The number of vehicles with

some degree of electrification will jump from five in 2008 to 116 by the end of 2011, David Vieau, pres-ident and CEO of battery maker A123 Systems, told the Detroit Economic Club last week.

That’s just the start. “It could become tough to find

a car without electric augmen-tation in seven or eight years,” Hall said.

Lincoln took a major step in the mass-marketing of hybrids when it made a 41-mpg-in-the-city hybrid the base model of its MKZ sedan.

Many upcoming vehicles using electrification won’t call them-selves hybrids. They’ll promise better fuel economy or perfor-mance without getting into nuts-and-bolts tech talk most people don’t care about.

Buick and Chevrolet are prime examples. The base 2012 Buick LaCrosse will promise 36 mpg on the highway and 25 in the city for less than $30,000, thanks to an electric system Buick calls eAs-sist. The 2012 Buick Regal midsize sedan aims to use eAssist for EPA ratings of 37 mpg on the highway and 26 in the city.

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu mid-

size sedan’s Eco model will have the same system when it goes on sale early next year.

They won’t wear “hybrid” badg-es, but they wouldn’t exist without systems they share with high-pro-file hybrid and electric cars.

Hybrid technology has become an enabler, a means to an end — lower fuel consumption.

“The manufacturers will talk about what the customer cares about, either the technology or the fuel economy,” Hall says. That means models like the Toyota Prius will continue to headline the word hybrid, while others will talk dol-lars and cents gas mileage.

Horn problem likely caused by wiring failureQ: I have a 1999 Corvette. My

horn would not work with the steering wheel in the straight-forward position. If I turned it all the way to the right or left, the horn would work. I turned the wheel all the way to the left and pushed on the horn, as it was blowing, I turned it all the way to the right while pressing the horn and it continued to blow. I then turned it all the way back to the left while it was still blow-ing. Now the horn works with the steering wheel in any position. But now the airbag deploy light stays on. What do you think hap-pened?

A: This a great question, and if I may admit relief, an easy one.

For many years the electrical connection making a steering-wheel horn switch possible was a spring-loaded contact button and brass slip ring. The button was attached to the steering column and the ring was on the back side of the steering-wheel hub. As you turned the steering wheel, the button would slide across the ring, making a fairly reliable (but occasionally squeaky) con-

nection.When SRS (supplemental

restraint systems — or airbags) came along, a more positive elec-trical connection was needed between the steering column and the airbag, mounted within the steering wheel. This device is known as a cable reel — or, informally, a clock spring.

Imagine a ribbon cable: a flat, firm plastic tape containing a

half-dozen or more wires embed-ded side by side, wound into a tape-measure-like assembly. One end of the cable connects to the steering column and the other to the steering wheel.

As the steering wheel turns, the ribbon cable slips and slides, winding and unwinding with-in a plastic housing. The airbag requires only two of the wires, the others are for the horn or other steering-wheel switches.

Cable reels haven’t proven to be absolutely reliable. There have been more-than-occasional complaints of crunching noises, an inoperative horn and illumi-nated SRS lamps.

It sounds like one or more con-ductors in your cable reel (the horn circuit) began to separate, and after a lock-to-lock turn of

the steering wheel, the ribbon cable twisted just right to create a new symptom. The SRS sys-tem monitors the electrical loop passing to, through and from the airbag and alerts you, via the warning lamp, if trouble occurs. Through no fault of yours, the cable reel now requires replace-ment.

Renewing a cable reel isn’t a difficult job, but it’s imperative that SRS service safety precau-tions be followed. Airbags can cause serious personal injury should they accidentally deploy during service.

Also, it’s important that the new cable reel be properly cen-tered relative to steering shaft position. An improperly installed cable reel will break with the first sharp U-turn.

Toyota’s new pre-crash technology directs steeringSUSONO, Japan — Toyota is

developing a safety technology that takes control of the steering so the vehicle can veer away when it isn’t able to stop before impact.

Toyota Motor Corp. showed some of its up and coming safety innova-tions in a demonstration to reporters Thursday at its facility in this town, west of Tokyo, near Mount Fuji.

All the world’s automakers are working on special safety technol-ogy in an effort to woo customers, as competition intensifies among manufacturers already neck-and-neck in delivering the regular fea-

tures for their products.Cars that stop or slow down auto-

matically before an object or per-son in anticipation of a possible crash are not new. But Toyota’s latest pre-collision system adds a steering-control feature.

In the new system, Toyota uses cameras and a super sensitive radar called “millimeter-wave,” both installed in the front of the vehicle, to detect possible crash-es such as a pedestrian crossing the road.

The vehicle calculates how brak-ing and steering must be applied to avoid a crash, said chief safety tech-nology officer Moritaka Yoshida.

“We must learn from accidents

and keep making improvements in safety features,” he said.

The Japanese automaker declined to say when the feature may be offered on a commercial model, or in which markets, but officials hinted it was ready to be offered soon.

Toyota said it was aiming for zero fatalities and injuries, although it did not say when that goal would

be achieved.Fatalities have been declining in

auto accidents, because of better safety features, but deaths among pedestrians in traffic accidents have not gone down in Japan.

Protecting pedestrians is increas-ingly key, according to Toyota, which makes the Prius hybrid and Lexus luxury models.

Toyota showed what is called a

pop-up hood, which rises slightly in a crash, to mitigate the impact of a pedestrian getting hit by a car, similar to features offered by European makers.

It also showed how parts of the rays from high-beam headlights could be blocked so that drivers could still see clearly what was ahead while headlights would appear to be on low beam to the driver in a car coming from the other direction.

Toyota also showed a steering wheel in development that mea-sures the heartbeat of the driver to prevent crashes that can hap-pen when drivers suffer heart attacks.

Vintage trailer enthusiasts flock to Felton’s ‘Trailers in the Trees’

FELTON, Calif. — Dozens of vin-tage travel trailer owners bonded through shared childhood mem-ories Saturday, oohing and aah-ing over dozens of restored relics during the fifth annual “Trailers in the Trees” rally at Smithwoods RV Park in Felton, Calif.

Slipping through a brief window in time, they relived the memories created during family camping trips, when the trailers lacked the luxurious bells and whistles fea-tured in today’s monstrous recre-ational vehicles.

One had 1940s- and 1950s-era fig-urines sitting on the small shelves inside, while another even had a small cat door cut through the front door. Yet another had a wall hang-ing titled “Recipes for Keeping a Husband,” and a bathroom with nylon stockings hanging over a shower rod.

“That was so classic,” laughed Jim Kohl, visiting with his wife from Pleasanton, Calif. “It was right out of that time period.”

Napa, Calif., resident Dan Cutright said he and his wife, Susan, spent about two years restor-ing their 1954 aluminum Traveleze, which he likened to “a rustic cabin on wheels.”

The Coasters’ 1958 hit, “Yakety Yak” drifted out of a small speaker inside a fully restored, 1954 Jewel travel trailer, its pink, color-coor-dinated interior featuring every-thing from drapes and a bread box in the tiny kitchenette to a pink lamp and tissue holder in the small bedroom. A stream of late-after-noon sun shone through one of the windows, the light gleaming off a strand of pearls coiled inside a dish next to the bed.

Thomas Birdsall, who traveled to the rally from Danville, Calif., with his son, purchased the trailer in 2009, and said he got his inspira-tion for the interior design from two pink china dishes he inherited from his grandmother. His 12-year-old son, Alan, helped with some of the restoration and decorating work,

but asked whether all the pink both-ered him, he shrugged and said, “I’m used to it by now.”

In the late afternoon, Steven Kat-kowsky took a group to view his museum in Ben Lomond, Calif., which has dozens of vintage cars

and trailers, as well as fishing and camping gear. Few of the items are actually for sale, he said, but it provided another chance for the event’s participants to relive a sim-pler time in American history.

Cotter came up with the idea for “Trailer in the Trees” after notic-ing there were few such “RV ral-lies” in Northern California, and wanted to provide an opportunity for people who love vintage trailers to gather for a weekend of camp-ing and solidarity.

Sitting on a picnic table outside of the 1962 Shasta Airflyte she and her husband restored was a scrap-book featuring before and after pictures of the restoration proj-ect, which they completed in 2006 incorporating items owned by her grandmother.

This was Kathy Lebs’s third year participating in the event, which involved traveling from Santa Rosa with her 17-foot-long, 1962 “perfect-ly imperfect” Road Runner. Pan-eled in birch, with a small Formica kitchen table and a pull-out Gaucho bed in the bedroom, she sees her trailer’s small flaws as adding the character that the “modern mon-sters” lack.

Most of the restoration work was cosmetic, but she’s been working for the last two years on another trailer that she calls “Chiclet” — a reference to both its shape and the female version of a “man cave.”

She fondly recalled memories created as a child while camping with her parents and grandparents, saying that although she only pur-chased the Road Runner several years ago, “it’s the same smell, the same feel. It’s like a song, you close your eyes and you’re right there again.”
