I'm dirty and noisy, but I think you'll find me to be pretty amazing. My name's Dharma, and I'm a dust storm. You can find me in many parts of the world. You can find me most of the time in Africa and the Middle East. There are many deserts there. Deserts, of course, have lots of sand. There aren't many plants in a desert to hold the sand or soil in place. Winds and loose sand or soil are what I need. For me to show up, there has to be a lot of wind. In very dry areas, winds pick up sand and dust from the ground. The winds pick them up and throw them down, which loosens even more sand and dust. When I carry sand, I stay close to the ground. I look like a dark, mean cloud traveling on the ground. When I arrive, I make it very hard for people to see. It's also very hard to breathe in a sandstorm. For both of those reasons, I can be very dangerous. When I carry lighter dust, I don't have to stay so close to the ground. In fact, I can carry dust thousands of feet into the air! When I do this, I can carry dust more than halfway around the world! I can make it hard to breathe when I arrive. When I leave an area, I take with me a lot of sand and dust. When I do that, there sometimes isn't much soil left. Soil is important for farmers to grow crops. Because I take away soil, I can make it hard for people to grow food. I can get a lot worse when people don't take care of the land. For many years, people in the American Midwest didn't take care of the land they farmed. The land got very dry, and I came to stay. For most of the 1930s, I blew dust all over the middle of the United States. Many of the people who used to farm there had to leave. An E-mail from Dharma the Dust StormBy Kathleen W. Redman

Hi, there! You probably don't like dirty, noisy people, do you?

These days, I'm rare in the United States but still common in other places around the world. You can imagine I'm not very popular, but I really am something impressive to see.

Simple Machines: The Wheel and AxleBy Brandi Waters

Simple machines make it easier for us to do work. A wheel and axle is one of the six simple machines. The wheel and axle work together to make one simple machine. A round water faucet knob is one example of a wheel and axle. The round knob is the wheel. Under the knob is a thin shaft. The knob is connected to the shaft. The shaft turns the water on and off. The shaft is the axle. The thin shaft would be hard to turn with your hands. The knob is larger. It is easy to turn with your hand. When you turn the knob, it also turns the shaft. The water is easy to turn off and on, thanks to a wheel and axle! There are many objects that use wheels and axles. A car uses many wheels and axles. The steering wheel is a wheel that turns an axle. That axle is connected to more wheels and axles that turn the wheels that move the car. A dolly is a tool that uses a wheel and axle to make heavy things easy to move. The weight is balanced on the dolly. You move the weight by rolling the dolly on its wheels. That is much easier than pushing a heavy object across the floor. The wheel and axle is a simple machine that makes many hard jobs easy to do.

LugeBy Mary Perrin

There are three Olympic sledding sports. They are bobsled (bobsleigh), skeleton, and luge. Luge is the fastest of the three sledding sports. Luge can be done with one person or two. A luge athlete is called a "slider." Once sliders get started down the track, they lie with their backs on the sled and their feet out in front of them. Luge is a dangerous sport. Their heads are only centimeters from the ice. They have been known to reach speeds of nearly 90 miles per hour.

Big feet are not good for sliders. They must look over their feet to see where they are going. The bigger their feet, the harder it is to see the track ahead of them. Sliders steer the sled with the weight of their bodies. The luge sled is flat. There are two metal blades on the bottom of the sled. These blades, called runners, touch the ice. The blades help the sled to go faster. Imagine putting ice skating blades on the bottom of your sled. Wouldn't you go much faster?

A luge sled can weigh no more than 50.6 pounds for a single rider. Men and women have weight guidelines, too. These guidelines help make the competition fair. Singles races are held over two days. Doubles races take place on one day. Accuracy and strength matter. These give a slider speed. Speed wins races. Do not try this sport at home, kids. Leave it up to the Olympians who know exactly what they are doing!

Oops, I BouncedBy Patti Hutchison

Josh ran into the bank. He had a look of panic on his face. A teller saw him. "Can I help you?" she asked.

"Is Kate around? I need to see her. She's been helping me with my new checking account," Josh said breathlessly.

"Have a seat for a minute. I'll get her for you," the teller told Josh.

Soon Kate came out of her office. "How nice to see you, Josh. How can I help you today?"

Josh pulled an envelope out of his pocket. "I got this letter from the bank," he said, showing it to Kate.

"Uh-oh," Kate said, "that doesn't look good."

"Can you explain it to me?" Josh asked.

Kate took the letter out of the envelope. "This is an overdraft notice," she told Josh. "You tried to take money out of the bank when there was not enough in your account to cover it."

"How can that be?" Josh asked. "I have tried to keep track of all my transactions."

"It happens," Kate told him, "even when you are really careful. Come into my office; we'll take a look at your account history. Did you bring your check register?"

"Yes," Josh said, taking it out of his pocket.

Kate pulled Josh's account history up on the computer. She and Josh looked at the screen. Josh opened his register. They began to compare what Josh had written in his register with the transactions listed on the computer.

At first, everything matched. Josh had listed all his deposits and checks in his register. Kate checked his arithmetic for each transaction. It was all correct. Finally, she found what was missing.

"Here we go," Kate said. "There is an ATM withdrawal missing. On July 27, you withdrew $50 from your checking account at an ATM. You forgot to write it in your check register."

Josh slapped himself on the forehead. "I tried to remember to write everything down. I remember now; I was in a hurry that day. It completely slipped my mind."

"It is common to forget to write in ATM transactions and debit card purchases. But now you have to pay the price," Kate said, frowning. "You are charged fees when this happens. Where was the check written to, the one that bounced?"

"The grocery store," Josh told her. "I bought groceries, thinking I had enough money in the bank to cover the check."

"The grocery store will charge you for that bounced check. You need to go to the store and pay the amount of the check, plus the fee. It will probably be $20, maybe more. I hate to tell you this, but the bank will also charge you a fee. We charge $15 for returned checks. We take the money right out of your account. Sorry," Kate frowned.

"It's okay," Josh said, "I should have been more careful. You told me it would cost me money if I bounced a check. You sure were right!"

"I see you have made a deposit since then, so you shouldn't bounce any more checks. From now on, make sure you write down every transaction," Kate said.

"Don't worry," Josh told her, "I've learned my lesson. Thanks for explaining this to me. I'll see you in a few

The Nervous SleepBy Kathleen W. Redman

What's your favorite way to relax? Do you have a hobby that completely puts your mind at ease? Think about the last time you saw a really great movie. For the first few minutes of the movie, you noticed people sitting around you - your friends, your family, the people sitting right in front of you. As the movie got really good, you probably forgot about the people sitting around you. If the movie was absolutely amazing, you even might have forgotten you were in the movie theater!

Many people believe that being that involved in a movie is a kind of hypnosis. Your mind relaxes and focuses so much on the movie that you react as if the movie was real. You jump in your seat when something is scary. You cry when something is sad. It's almost like the movie is wired directly to your brain.

Scientists, doctors, therapists, and entertainers use this idea to hypnotize people. They get their subjects relaxed and very focused. They are so relaxed and focused they forget about the people around them. They respond to suggestions much like people do in a movie theater. They're "caught up in the moment" and feel free to do what is suggested.

Some psychiatrists use hypnosis to help people relax and focus on solving deep emotional problems. Sometimes, hypnosis is used to focus on remembering a long-forgotten memory. Hypnosis can be very helpful to people trying to break habits like smoking or eating too much.

Stage hypnosis can be very entertaining. Hypnotists can suggest crazy things, like telling someone her shoe is a phone she needs to answer. Some people think that hypnotists can make people do things they wouldn't ever normally do. That's not true. Even though someone is relaxed and focused, she still has a conscience and her own thoughts that keep her from doing something she doesn't want to do.

There are some scientists who think people are in a form of hypnosis - like in a movie theater, riding in a car or listening to music - at least once a day. Does it happen to you?

And, by the way, the word hypnotism comes from neuro-hypnotism, which means "nervous sleep." It seems very odd to call something nervous sleep when it is supposed to be relaxing, doesn't it?

The PuffinBy Vickie ChaoRewritten as a very quick reader by Cindy Grigg

Puffins are small sea birds. Like penguins, they wear colors of black and white. Puffins are much smaller than penguins. They are about the size of a pigeon. They have large beaks. In fall and winter, the beak and feet are drab gray. In the spring, their beaks and feet become brightly colored. Some people call them "sea parrots." Puffins live on the open ocean for most of their lives. In the spring, they return to the land where they were born. Puffins use their large, brightly colored beaks to attract a mate. Mates stay together for many years. They use their beaks and feet to dig out a burrow for nesting. The female will lay one egg. They raise one chick each year. Both parents take care of the egg and the chick. In August, they return to the sea. Puffins are fast flyers. They can fly 55 mph! They flap their wings very fast. They dive under the water to catch fish to eat. In the water, they flap their wings to swim. Puffins are good swimmers. Long ago, some people thought that puffins were both birds and fish! Puffins are good at fishing, too. They can hold about ten fish in their beaks at one time. One puffin had a record of 62 fish in his beak at once!
