By George Duke

K athy and I purchased our 1914 Model 27 7 passenger Haynes at auction in Hershey about 11 years ago. We had 3 or 4 cars come to the block before the Haynes and

we tried to bid on all of them. They all started or quickly went over our budget until only the Haynes was left. At that point the supply and demand for brass cars at Hershey must have been in balance and we were able to finally win a bid.

Not counting the broker, we are the third owner of this car. It was purchased new by the O’Leary fam-ily in Mason City, Iowa. It passed down family mem-ber to family member until the early 1980’s when a Mr. Wayne Schmidt, also of Mason City bought it. He and a friend, Harvey Baker got it running again, put tires on it and showed it in the AACA class of HPOF in the first year of the HPOF class. It was then put away again until Mr. Schmidt passed away at which time the broker Mark Hyman bought it.

Mr. Hyman showed the car at Pebble Beach in

2007 and took 3rd place in preservation after driving it 57 miles on the Pebble Beach tour. After that he brought it to Hershey where we purchased it at the auction.

It is a 50 horsepower, six cylinder with 468 cubic inch displacement, a 130” wheelbase and three speed transmission. The car retains its original paint, top and interior although the paint is so dead that you can’t tell the original color. You can however, see the outline of the pinstriping as well as the O’Leary’s mon-ogram which was painted between the doors. The top is original but is in such bad shape it can’t be used and we plan to replace it with the same fabric that came on the car. Hartz Fabric supplied the original material and they recently made another run of it which we will use. Eric Hartz, grandson of the founder, told me he has actual correspondence between his grandfather and Elwood Haynes, the creator of the Haynes Auto-mobile Company of Kokomo, Indiana.

Interestingly, while cleaning the car I found a bank deposit slip from Mason City in Mr. O’Leary’s name as well as a registration card for the year 1919.

Also of interest, this car has a pre-selector transmission similar to the Cords of the 30’s. Surpris-ing to me is the fact that a number of cars in the teens had this fea-ture. The driver selects the de-sired gear by pushing a button in the middle of the steering wheel which partially closes a circuit, then by depressing the clutch the circuit is completely closed and large solenoids pull the desired gear into place. This was an effort to make driving easier for women and is in a way a forerunner of the automatic transmission.

We had Mainely Mags (a company in Maine, hence the spelling) rebuild the mag and Cary Winston rebuilt the water pump, which was no small feat, Randy Green and I replaced nu-merous seals and packings and rebuilt the brakes. New hoses, a fan belt, new tires and tubes and a few bulbs finished what was needed to put it back on the road for tours of which we have done quite a few.

We have no plans to restore the car, just use it as is for touring and the occasional show. It is a crowd pleaser, especially for the kids.

In 1953, Buick introduced a sporty convertible called the Skylark to celebrate its 50th anniversary. It was derived from a modified Roadmaster convertible, and sold for exactly $5,000. Only 1,690 were produced, and in 1954 the Skylark model reappeared as a modified Century convertible. The 1954 had a much lower production of only 836. This model was then dropped for seven years.

In 1961, the Skylark name was resurrected in the form of a sporty compact coupe introduced mid-year. It featured an all-aluminum V-8 engine of 215 cubic inches, producing 185 horsepower. A total of 12,683 were produced. For 1962, the Skylark line was expanded to include a convertible ($4,367). This was the most expensive model in the Special/Skylark series, at $3,012, and it enjoyed a production run of 8,913. The horsepower received a slight boost to 190 as a result of a squeeze in the compression ratio to 11.1. The convertible weighted in at 2,871 pounds, giving it a 15:1 pounds per horsepower ratio.

I am fortunate to have one of these: A Glacier Blue convertible with white interior and top. My car was bought new on July 11, 1962, at Peacock Buick in Falls Church, Virginia, according to paperwork that was found in the glove compartment.

I bought the car from its second owner in September, 1989. During the years since then, the car has enjoyed some cosmetic restoration, including rocker panel replacement, repainting, new top, and some chrome plating.

The engine compartment and interior are original, except for a beautiful rebuild of the steering wheel and gearshift knob.

The size and handling of this Skylark make it a real joy to drive, both in town and on the open road. I hope to be enjoying it for many years to come. It shares garage space with my other pride and joy, a 1953 Roadmaster Woody Wagon (model 79R). Sometimes my biggest dilemma is deciding which one to drive first.

It was apparently not Packard day, we had two break downs, both Packards. Soon on the road again with a bee-line for the ice cream store. (Inset) Budd Lacy has been in movies and on television with his cars but had not received an Oscar or an Emmy. He wrote a story which appear in the March issue of Gaslight and was presented with the “Pull-It-Sir” award. He did not express his disappointment that is was not a Pulitzer. Great day, great fun, if you have not participated in a Fun Run you are missing out on some of the club’s best activities. At the top of this page is another outstanding Fun Run coming up on May 19. Each year we have the op-portunity to raise funds for St. Joseph’s Villa and other pro-grams through ad sales for the program and through registration fees. Last year raised over $1200 from the program sales. This year we have compiled a sales kit con-sisting of a sample program, a copy of the GASLIGHT and sales con-tracts. They should be self explana-tory. We prepared 20 sales kits to be handed out at the February regu-lar meeting. They were all gone in minutes. Additional kits were pre-pared and made available at the Awards Banquet held on February 18. If you were not able to attend either meeting, there are still kits available. This is an easy way to raise funds for our selected charities. We have added more choices this year. All ads can be in color for a small fee of only $25 extra. We are also offering a sponsorship list on the website for a year for only an additional $25. Because of produc-tion requirements, the deadline is May 31. Advertiser’s in the program will receive a one time ad in the GASLIGHT. Ontime delivery of the program is critical! If the program is late or not at the show, the value of the advertising is totally lost.

GASLIGHT 13 APRIL, 2018

By Darlene Hatcher

Back in September 2000, We decided to head down to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to a big Car Show. Having traveled all day to get there, we finally arrived about 6:00 P.M. on a Friday night tired and hungry.

After getting some dinner, the guys went into town that night to check out the cars that were all around and about for the Annual Car Show Event there .The gals stayed home.

Around 11:00 P.M. or so they returned and all the conversation and excitement seemed to be about a certain 1957 Chevrolet Convertible and I myself was tired and sleepy by then and I was not paying too much attention to the commotion of it all! I went to sleep.

Getting up the next morning, the gang started to talk about that car again, I was told that I needed to listen to what they had seen? I said "what's so big about this car"? I was informed real quick-like that it was Matador red with white top convertible and was just restored with one mile on it. Having a 283 cubic inch engine with a fac-tory two-four carburation set up on it, which is rare. You know with the Batwings, what ever that was? I thought to myself. It was just about then that I real-ized that it was my husband Henry that was the most interested in purchasing the rare beauty. So without further ado, we all got ready, had breakfast and eight of us went out to find that car, it was at a motel there in town, roped off so nobody could get close enough to touch it. The guys spent several hours checking it over, under and if Henry had wings, I know that he would have flown over the top as well so long as nothing touched that car.

Henry was so excited. We decided to think about it and come back. Within an hour, Henry was ready to go get that car. I really believe he had his mind made up the night before when returning back to the motor home, however he was just trying to

break it to me that we were going to spend our re-tirement sooner than planned. The 1957 was headed to Barrett Jackson Auction to be sold, instead it was locked up in a car trailer and later delivered within the week to Powhatan VA where we reside.

Well, folks, it has been eighteen years and that car has made it up the ladder all the way to Senior Grand National and has previously been nominated for the AACA National Award in 2007. What an honor it was to be a recipient of that award from a selection covering the United States in which they

narrowed the field down to twenty five awards to be given out. Henry and Darlene attended the 2008 AACA Annual Banquet on February 09, 2008 to receive the Award. Henry was given the Senior Chevrolet Award for 2007. Mississippi Squirrel is still his pride and joy! The car has been a lot of enjoyment for us, because through showing the car, it has enabled us to go places that we would

never have taken the time to go. We have met so many nice people through our travels. Seen lots of great places.

Each and every time that he gets near that car, he is just full of smiles! It has been worth every pen-ny spent and then some because Henry has always been a very serious person that worked extremely hard . He had never taken the time to enjoy much in life? This car certainly changed all that for us. I al-ways told Darlene that something got a hold of me and so that is how this 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air got its name "Mississippi Squirrel" after the song that Ray Stevens wrote.

GASLIGHT 15 APRIL, 2018

Why do people rob banks? Legend has it, “Because that’s where the money is”

was the answer given by infamous bank robber Willie Sutton. Sounds like a pretty simple answer doesn’t it? Where do we find prospective new AACA members? The answer may not be as simple as where the money is kept, but probably isn’t that difficult to answer either. The simplest answer would be “where there are old cars”. That answer by itself needs a little more detail. How about the person that comes over and asks a lot of questions about your old car when you are out for a ride? Have you ever suggested joining to someone that expresses an interest? Have you handed out AACA flyers at a local cruise night or car show promoting the ad-vantages of membership in your region? Do you know anyone that belongs to the local Ford V-8 Club, Buick Club or any of the Marque clubs? What about the neighbor who still owns his grandfathers old pickup that has been in the family for 30 years? The answer is “Wherever you see old cars.” So be prepared, carry a few of the red Mustang cutouts or the new AACA Tri-fold brochure with you. Have some printed handouts promoting region membership. Start attending local cruise nights and other old car events. Sometimes pro-spects are right under our nose and we fail to see them. Let’s go “where the money is!” Better yet, let’s bring them to where the cars are!

cold outside to do much hands-on work, but it’s the perfect opportunity to peruse catalogs and websites for new things like upholstery kits, engine upgrades, and new chrome bits. Sometimes we just dream. But occasionally we splurge and order away!

Winter is also a great time to strategize for our June Car Show and Swap Meet. And our Committee heads have done just that! The 2018 show will feature century old cars! This will include cars of 1918 and older, and I know there are a few of these gems resting in our own club member’s garages. June 23rd will be the perfect day to have them out to shine for our 49th annual show!

In addition, the Virginia Jaguar Club will be host-ing a nationally sanctioned Concours within our show! This promises to bring some beautiful and ex-citing Jaguars to our event.

We are becoming known for offering antique car rides at our show. This is probably the most reward-ing part of the show as it gives families the chance to ride in a car that they would never have an opportuni-ty to do so. And it may inspire future generations! We always welcome new volunteers to use their an-tique cars to chauffer these appreciative riders.

Another exciting addition this year will be a spe-cial presentation of assembling a pile of Model T parts into a complete car that can be driven away . . . in less than a half hour!!

There are lots of other wonderful ideas that are going into our 2018 show, which will be outlined dur-ing the general meeting on Thursday, April 5th. I in-vite you to come to this meeting and to share the pride that comes from working with so many good people in our club.

The Fun Runs keep coming, and the Munseys’ are looking to you for help in keeping the monthly adven-tures exciting and unique. If you have a location or an activity that you would like to share with the club as part of a Fun Run, please contact Brian or Lisa. They will help you build it into a great outing for all to en-joy!

As winter weather finally gives way to milder temps, my new strategy is to move all the new parts I ordered in February but never installed to the back of the garage, so that I’ll be able get the car out on that first 70-degree day!

See you on the Road! . . . Bruce
