KATHRYN PFEFFER-SCANLAN MS, RD, ONEHUNGRYBUNNY.COMI had a routine for my daily breakfast including overnight oats and to have an extra serving of vegetables at lunch and dinner. Include a PROTEIN at every meal. It will help keep you full and decrease cravings.

LESS SALT and salty foods. Be mindful of PORTIONS.

Grab quick and easy prep SNACKS

Weight loss is tough for anyone: two - or four-legged! However, losing weight and getting in shape can add not only years to you or your pet’s life; it can also make those years more enjoyable.

Why a Healthy Weight is Important for your Dog:As few as five pounds above your dog’s ideal weight can put it at risk for developing some serious medical conditions:• Type 2 diabetes• Respiratory and Heart disease• Osteoarthritis• High blood pressure• Many forms of cancer - especially intra-abdominal cancers

Start with calories• Fewer calories in plus more calories out equals weight loss.

Exercise the Right Way• Walk briskly on the “out” leg of your walk• Move the food bowl upstairs or downstairs and rotate it so thatthe dog always has to walk to get to its bowl.• Use toys, balls, laser pointers, squeaky toys, anything that yourdog finds interesting to chase.

Rechecks & Weigh-Ins• Come by the clinic any time to weigh in your dog• Bring in before and after pictures to post on our board

Winter conditions can present a wide range of challenges to your lawn and landscape, but there are precautions you can take to protect your lawn, as well as your trees and shrubs, from seasonal harm.

COLD TEMPERATURE STRESS

More so than any other season, trees and shrubs are vulnerable to changing weather conditions during the winter. Wide temperature fluctuation and extremely low temperatures are the biggest factors of tree stress, meaning your trees are more susceptible to things like frost cracks, sunscald and winter burn.

Keep twigs and limbs from breaking under the weight of ice by carefully brushing away, whenever possible, any snow load from plants, which will reduce the weight on the limbs and decrease the damage. Placing a burlap cover around shrubs such as boxwood and yews will help reduce winter desiccation.

Proper fertilization can help keep your trees and shrubs healthy well into spring, and allow them to better tolerate winter. A service like TruGreen can help with tree and shrub services customized to meet your landscape’s every need, including applications to control overwintering insects, pests and mites.

FREEZING TEMPERATURES

Damage to plants, shrubs and trees as a result of sustained low temperatures can typically go undetected until spring or early summer, when plants fail to produce new growth. To help prevent damage, maintain a two- to three-inch layer of mulch to help protect the crown and roots from weather extremes.

WINTER DEHYDRATION

During the colder months of winter, plants cannot replace moisture lost from leaves and needles. This leads to “dehydration” - technically known as desiccation. To help avoid this problem, maintain proper watering late into the fall, or water during periods of winter thaw. TruGreen offers an anti-desiccation service that helps reduce moisture loss caused by cold winter winds for broadleaf evergreens that are most susceptible to winter desiccation.

SNOW PLOW DAMAGE

Install brightly-colored boundary markers along the edges of paved areas to help protect lawn and shrubs from snow plow and snow thrower blades. Lightweight wooden stakes, at least four feet tall with bright reflective tape and brightly covered fiberglass rods, serve as good markers. Avoid heavy metal, fence posts and other large objects, as they can pose a hazard to snow plow operators.

ICE MELT

Ice-melting agents, such as rock salt and products containing calcium and magnesium chloride, may accumulate in the soil and cause damage to plants. Use extreme care when applying ice-melting agents to prevent damage to your plants or concrete surfaces.

Home for SaleThinking of selling your home? Potential buyers always look for the perfect home that does not require any repair work. Hire a handyman to prep your home for sale and get the best price for it.

“First impression is the last impression”, and it holds true when you get ready to sell your home. But before going ahead, you may find out that your home requires repair work. There are some jobs you can do on your own, but others require expertise, knowledge and skill. Small repair work can also turn into a mess if you do not do it correctly. To prep your home for sale, you should hire a handyman who can finish off the job in a day’s time.

It is a wise decision to hire a handyman as it can prevent any wastage of your resources. A handyman is a person who can complete small jobs in a day’s time. Usually he will work alone and charge on an hourly basis. If you are looking to finish extensive amount of work, then you can hire a contractor.

Before you sell your home, there are various reasons to hire a handyman, such as:

PERFECT FINISHIf you want your home to look good to potential buyers, then it should look worth the money. Numerous jobs such as applying a coat of paint to the bedroom wall, fixing faucets in the bathroom, or repairing the kitchen sink are simple and inexpensive. You can easily add the cost of the repair work to the home’s selling price. It will give a perfect finish to your home and make it a hot property in the market.

LACK OF TIMESelling a home already puts a lot of responsibilities on your shoulder. And if you divert your time in petty repair work, then you cannot focus on selling your home. It is better to get a to-do list ready for a handyman who can ease our burden.

EXPERTISE SPEAKS FOR ITSELFAn updated home will attract more buyers and fetch you a good price. If you want a high-quality work, then it is always a good option to hire an expert. A professional handyman has the knowledge, expertise and equipment to efficiently and effectively do all the repair work.

INCREASE YOUR HOME’S VALUEYou must make sure that your home is ready for sale in the market. An updated home will fetch more buyers and a good price. Also, potential buyers look for curb appeal. Thus, you can hire a handyman to work on the exterior of your home such as painting the walls and washing the deck. You can consider investing in all the areas that look outdated or need repair work.

Potential buyers always notice if the home is not maintained properly. They avoid buying a home that is in dire need of repair work. So, in order to avoid losing a buyer who will pay a good price for your home, you must make sure that your home is in a great condition. To get rid of the responsibility of looking into the repair work, hire a handyman to prep your home for sale.

Make yourappointment today!

add liGHt WitH diy decor

When your home decor needs an upgrade, but expensive, ready-made items aren’t in your budget, DIY projects can be an easy and affordable solution for revitalizing rooms in your home. One simple way to enhance the character of a room is with lighted elements.

Add a glistening, on-trend look with a lighted canvas, which features twinkling lights that dance on shimmering glitter to lend a glam look to any room. The project, designed by crafting experts at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, can be adapted to any palette; just change out the color of the glitter to match the hues in your favorite room.

For a charming, subtle accent, this frosted jar and doily not only adds quaint flair - the jar also provides a soft glow of light. It’s perfect nestled on a shelf or sitting atop a dresser with similarly styled items.

GLITTER AND LIGHTS CANVAS

Crafting time: 3-5 hoursSkill level: Intermediate

Supplies and Tools:

Foam brush

18-by-24-inch canvas

Decoupage medium

Ultra-fine to coarse gold glitter

Craft knife

3 packages battery-operated warm white LED moon lights

Duct tape

Protected work surface

Instructions:

Use foam brush to cover entire canvas with layer of decoupage medium.

Working 12 inches from canvas, dust canvas with glitter. Apply glitter so bottom is fully covered, fading into less glitter at top to create an ombre effect. Apply additional layers of glitter to achieve a thick consistency at bottom. Mix types of glitters to create dimension.

Apply thin layer of decoupage medium over entire canvas to seal glitter. Tip: Ensure base layer is completely dry before applying top coat to avoid smearing glitter.

Poke small hole in back of canvas with craft knife. Push tip of moon light through hole and secure in place with duct tape. Repeat, adding holes and lights over entire canvas. Continue ombre effect by placing more lights at bottom of canvas and less toward top. Apply layers of duct tape to hold lights securely in place on canvas.

FROSTED BALL JAR WITH DOILY

Crafting time: 1-2 hoursSkill level: Intermediate

Supplies and Tools:

Ball jar (1-quart)

Frosted glass spray

Doily (8- to 10-inch diameter)

Spray adhesive

Hemp twine

1/8-inch ribbon

Battery-powered tea light

Instructions:

Follow manufacturer’s directions and spray Ball jar completely with frosted glass spray. Allow to dry completely. Spray working side of doily with adhesive. Press doily to jar, smoothing out any wrinkles. Allow to dry thoroughly. Use twine and ribbon to embellish top. Place battery-powered tea light inside.

Living Room Painting Ideas Continued from Page 11

I – Innovative Options Do you want something as unique as your personal style? Why not consider the following innovative painting options for the living room? 1. A customized message can become a perfect way to make a bold statement. 2. Choose a typographical design for the living room and paint a large monogram on the wall to give it a personalized look. 3. You can blur the boundaries between the ceiling and the walls with the help of ombre effect. 4. Faux molding and faux wood patterns can create an elegant look in the living room without the need of an exorbitant budget. 5. Paint the room in stripes of different width. You can select bold colors to emphasize the vibrant ambience. Also, consider chevron print.

C – Color the Ceiling; Color the FloorWhen it comes to the living room, think more than the walls. You can paint the ceiling as well as the floor in beautiful colors to welcome the guests with a riot of colors. For the ceiling, you can consider a sky-theme. You can even paint the ceiling in a bright shade and choose lighter shades of the same color for the walls. Also, stripes or free-hand patterns for the ceiling are trendy. Painting the floor is the simplest way of giving a make-over to the living room. If you have a concrete floor, you can paint it in a solid color or create a checkerboard look to make the living room fun. Alternatively, you can go for free-hand design or stencil design for a beautiful looking floor. You can stain the concrete for a wooden effect or a natural stone effect. Painting the living room is a huge investment. Not only you will spend money on it, you will also put your reputation on the line. If you commit a mistake, you will end up ruining the look of the living room. So, make sure that you consider several ideas and talk to different painting contractors before making a decision.

add liGHt WitH diy decor

So, make sure that you consider several ideas and talk to different painting contractors before making a decision.

add liGHt WitH diy decor
