Connie and Ken SChoen moved to duluth later in life being drawn to laKe Superior by Ken’S paSSion for Sailing and diSCovering a 2 aCre property overlooKing the laKe.

They went on to build a house here, but it is through volunteering they made this region home. Volunteering created connections within the community while giving them a chance to give something back. But, this wasn’t enough.

During their careers in the field of corrections, Ken and Connie saw first hand the destructive impact that a distressed childhood can have on kids trying to reach their potential. Having worked for a foundation in New York City for years, Ken knew that foundations could be a source of help. They assumed for individuals to respond to such a problem would take millions of dollars. The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation provided the solution.

The couple went on to create the Kenneth and Concetta Schoen Scholarship Fund to assist students who had not

consistently displayed high academic achievement but have the potential to complete post secondary work. The students are also in a financial position where without this scholarship, higher education might not be an option.

“The showing of interest and financial support can go a long way in a student’s life,” Ken says. “With motivation and an opportunity for success, they can develop into much more than even we can imagine.”

“Research shows there is a need for a stronger presence of the arts in Superior,” says Kaye Tenerelli, Executive Director of Superior Business Improvement District (BID). To achieve this, Superior BID, in collaboration with the Superior Public Art Creating Community Environments (SPAC2ES) proposed a project called Phantom Galleries. The concept, modeled after L.A.’s successful Phantom Galleries Project, provides temporary exhibits of established regional artists in vacant storefronts in Superior’s downtown. The exhibits can be viewed from car or on foot, making the art accessible to all.

Today, the project is well underway thanks to a 2010 grant from the Community Foundation’s Morgan Fund. The field of interest fund, which was established by Richard and Elizabeth Burns in 1984, gives priority to projects that foster community pride or economically impact the Twin Ports.

To assist in the project, Superior BID and SPAC2ES brought on long-time Superior textiles artist Erika Mock as director. Erika says the project serves multiple purposes including exhibit space for professional and emerging artists. They can also sell their work. “This is something exciting for artists, the community and property owners” says Erika. “This is an opportunity to display artwork in a non-traditional setting while breathing some vibrancy into the downtown.”

Long-term, Kaye believes Superior’s downtown is on the edge of transforming into an arts destination that would benefit the entire region. “This project is an absolute must,” she says. “This could potentially lead to long-term gallery space in our downtown or attract a new or existing business in the region that has a strong appreciation for the arts to our downtown.”

“It feels good to help others,” Helen says. Robin adds “volunteering keeps me grounded. There are always people with needs and it feels good to help out where I can.”

Today, the two volunteer with the Damiano Center’s Clothes That Work program. The program assists job seekers and low income workers by providing work appropriate clothing, job interview advice, and hygiene and beauty products. “These people come in really down and out,” explains Robin. “We give them a start. This isn’t a hand-out but rather assisting them so they can get their life back on track.”

In 2010, the Damiano Center received a grant from the Community Opportunity Fund to assist with the increased demand for services through the Clothes That Work program. The unrestricted fund allows the Community Foundation to be responsive to crucial issues based on its ongoing assessment of community needs—in this case assisting more than 2,000 individuals find or maintain employment.

While these numbers are impressive, Robin says seeing firsthand the impact on individuals is what inspires her continued involvement. “I build amazing friendships with these people. As they come back and share their stories on finding a job and getting back on their feet, it feels great to know I played a small role.” This role helps people on the edge start over to achieve their dreams.

phil and babS Strom’S life readS liKe a fairy tale. phil firSt met babS in germany while Serving in the military after being drafted during the vietnam war. in 1967, phil returned to the StateS with babS at hiS Side. together, they began building a life from the ground-up.

“I have seen poverty at its worst,” explains Babs, who grew up in Germany during World War II. Phil, who was raised on a share crop farm, knows firsthand the value of hard work. This history plays a vital role in what they are today.

After returning stateside, Phil began a long career as a successful financial planner while Babs raised two children and taught. Now retired, the two are focused on giving back to a community that has been so generous. “We have more than we could possibly ever need,” explains Phil. “It is our time to give something back.”

For the Stroms, giving back doesn’t just come in the form of writing a check. The two are active in the community, both as volunteers and board members at numerous regional organizations. In addition, the couple established the Philip H. and Barbara Strom Family Charitable Fund at the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. The donor advised fund allows them to support causes they care about while playing an active role in the grant making process.

Phil says this distinction is important because, “we know we can’t support everything. We want to research where the

greatest need is and where we feel we can make the most positive impact in the organizations we support.” In addition to the involvement allowed by a donor advised fund, Phil and Babs appreciate the strong leadership and efficiency of partnering with a Community Foundation. The money is invested with assets from more than 300 additional funds, creating a $50+ million investment pool managed by some of the best financial leaders.

The couple has no plans of slowing this involvement down anytime soon. When asked why they choose to play such an active role in this community versus enjoying a well-deserved retirement of leisure, Babs says “I’m grateful that I’m healthy. I want to show gratitude for everything I’ve been granted in life.”

Likewise, we extend our gratitude to a generous couple that is always on the edge of guiding change through their involvement in and passion toward this community.

three partners (pictured below) have embraced a relatively new business model called rural outsourcing. Rural outsourcing focuses on soliciting work in high cost areas but performing the work in Duluth at reduced rates. The end result is a great deal of high quality, technical work being imported into Duluth.

Today, Erickson and his partners are committed to giving back to the community through a scholarship at the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. They see this gift as more than just

a scholarship, though. “Beyond giving back to a community that has provided so much to us, we really want to encourage the growth of young, talented students who want to study technology and hopefully stay in the region,” Erickson says. The Saturn Systems scholarship is designed specifically for students who wish to pursue a degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Similarly, the Community Foundation sees a natural fit collaborating with business leaders, such as Saturn Systems, given our initiative to attract and retain young adults to the region. This creates a win-win for companies like Saturn Systems, and this region which will benefit from positioning themselves as leaders on the edge of this high-tech industry.

2010 Distribution of Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation Grants

Dear Friends,On the edge of… a bright future, full of promise and

discovery. 2010 marked a year of discovery as we embarked on a journey of connecting and listening to hundreds of our stakeholders. We heard firsthand what matters most to our community. Over the course of the year we connected with volunteers, donors, students, nonprofit organizations and business and community leaders through listening sessions, surveys and in-depth interviews. Based on our findings, we

have created a new five-year strategic plan based on our mission of private giving for the public good. This plan serves as a roadmap to guide us in achieving our vision of fostering generosity, civic engagement and inclusiveness.

Beyond this, we celebrated many accomplishments within our community—a region that will thrive because of the incredible and resilient individuals that are committed to making this place great. Some of our accomplishments are highlighted on the next page. It is important to note that none of these would have happened without the generous commitment this community has made to the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation.

For that we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Because of you, the Community Foundation and the communities we serve are on the edge of a future full of endless possibility and prosperity.
