On the Caravaggio trail Aboard the sea cloud ii

September 30 – October 17, 2016 Tour leader: Dr Kathleen Olive

Overview Academy Travel is proud to offer a tour that explores the work of exceptional artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. His chiaroscuro technique, accentuating the dramatic contrasts between light and shade, control of the oil medium, and infusion of emotional intensity and the theatre of everyday life ensure that his works continue to captivate art lovers. This tour surveys the majority of Caravaggio’s work in southern Italy, from his early days as a painter of natura morta (still life), to his mature works in Rome and Naples’ chapels, to the hurried canvases of his troubled time on Malta and Sicily. The cruise takes place on the yacht Sea Cloud II. This 45-cabin, three-masted barque is traditionally crafted in teak, but with modern features. On most days the Sea Cloud II will set its 40 or so sails for at least a few hours, an enchanting experience. The experience of sailing on the Sea Cloud II is very, very different from mainstream ocean cruising and it gives us the unique opportunity to survey Caravaggio’s work in style and with a relaxed pace. In addition, we visit archaeological sites of pre-history and Antiquity on Malta and Sicily, as well as getting a sense of the medieval Mediterranean in glittering Norman Palermo and Angevin Naples. We also see key works of the period in their architectural context, from Caravaggio and Raphael’s canvases, to Bernini’s sculpture and Borromini’s architectural virtuosity. All this takes place in a setting of remarkable beauty – the spare, rocky shores of Malta, the dramatic mountains and volcanoes of Sicily and the countless bays and cliffs of the southern Italian coastline. The tour has been designed to combine the best of land and sea travel. The itinerary comprises four nights on Malta, the cruise and then a further five days in Naples and Rome. The land component is in carefully chosen, centrally located hotels that allow us to maximise our sight-seeing, and there are no long coach journeys. We have also included a number of excellent meals and time to individually explore local culture. The tour takes place in October, generally a very pleasant time of year on land and sea. Winds are typically fairly gentle at this time, allowing for an enjoyable sailing experience. Like all Academy Travel tours, there will be a maximum of 20 people in our party.

Tour Leader Dr Kathleen Olive holds a doctorate in Italian Studies from the University of Sydney, where she has also taught the history and culture of medieval and Renaissance Europe. Her expertise covers European history, society, art and architecture. Kathleen leads numerous tours to Italy, Spain and the United States for Academy Travel, and speaks fluent Italian. She has lectured extensively on the art of Caravaggio and its historical context.

The Sea Cloud II The 348-foot Sea Cloud II was launched in 2001, and offers a truly memorable travel experience. The design and fittings are modelled on her sister ship, the 1931 Sea Cloud, the private yacht of the renowned American heiress and businesswoman Marjorie Merewether Post. Teak decks, brass fittings, white cloth sails and luxurious decor create a unique environment, matching perfectly the historical themes of our tour. Although much of the journey takes place under motor, on several days the crew climbs the rigging to set the square sails and jibs and you experience the thrill of ocean yachting. The facilities onboard are excellent. With a maximum of 94 passengers and 50 crew, service is very attentive. (There is a maximum of 20 in our tour party.) Cabins are large and comfortable, with twin beds, a sofa, built-in wardrobes and private bathrooms (please see further information and diagrams later in this itinerary). There is a range of public spaces, including a salon, a library/internet station, a lido deck with a bar and seating and deck chairs running along the sides of the decks. There is a laundry, a small fitness centre, a day spa and a hospital room on board. A doctor accompanies all voyages. The food, wine and outstanding service on board is a real highlight of travelling on Sea Cloud II. All meals are included; the menu is interesting and varied and is complemented by a wide and varied range of wines. Dinners are served in the large and elegant dining room. Weather permitting, buffet lunches are served on the lido deck. Participants in Academy Travel’s 2012 tour on Sea Cloud II described it as the ‘trip of a lifetime’. Further information on the ship can be found at www.seacloud.com

Friday 30 september arrive malta

Flights from Australia arrive in the early afternoon. After transferring to our hotel and checking in, we take a short boat cruise of Malta’s imposing harbour before a welcome drink and light dinner in our hotel. Overnight Valletta (D)

Saturday 1 october Caravaggio on malta

We commence this morning with a guided walking tour of Valletta, Malta’s historic capital. The city was built immediately after the Great Siege of 1565 and is remarkably uniform in its layout and architecture. A highlight of our visit is the co-cathedral, with Caravaggio’s Beheading of St John the Baptist, painted in 1608 while the artist was seeking refuge from Italy, and his St Jerome. Our tour includes lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we transfer to the Inquisitor’s Palace in Vittoriosa, one of the only palaces of its type to survive in Europe. Its Baroque architecture and historic exhibits give us a sense of religious and political culture in Caravaggio’s time. In the late afternoon, we return to our hotel for an early evening talk. Overnight Valletta (B, L)

Sunday 2 october prehistoric temples and mdina

This morning we travel a short distance to some fascinating prehistoric temples, dating to 3,000 BCE, among the oldest built structures on earth. Nearby is an equally ancient hypogeum, or underground burial chamber. We continue to the former medieval capital of Malta, Mdina. Here we have lunch and explore the imposing cathedral and wander the charming streets before returning to Valletta. Overnight Valletta (B)

Monday 3 october gozo

The island of Gozo is the second largest in the Maltese archipelago, and it contains some remarkable sites. Today we take a private tour by boat and coach. Highlights of the day include the ‘Ggantija temples’, the world’s oldest religious structures, the fortress at Victoria and the fishing village of Xlendi, where we have lunch. We return to Valletta in the evening. Overnight Valletta (B, L)

Tuesday 4 october world war ii and malta

We begin the day with the short walk to the Lascaris War Rooms, a series of tunnels from the time of the Knights which were later converted for use as Allied headquarters during World War II. A number of significant operations – such as the Allied landing on Sicily, 1943’s Operation Husky – were strategised here and the War Rooms offer a fascinating window

Above: From Caravaggio’s Beheading of St John the Baptist, for the co-cathedral of St John, to the prehistoric temples of Ggantija on Gozo Below: The Saluting Battery over Valletta harbour

onto the period. After time for lunch, we meet in the early afternoon for our transfer to the port to board Sea Cloud II. After check-in procedures, we make a breathtaking sunset departure from Valletta harbour. Dinner is included every evening on board. Overnight Sea Cloud II (B, D)

Wednesday 5 october ortigia, the quail’s island

After a morning’s talk, you will have an opportunity to witness the crew’s technical operations, which will be explained to you by staff. After lunch on board, we arrive at Syracuse’s port and depart for our walking tour of the historic centre. The oldest part of Syracuse is Ortigia, a small island with a rich classical history. Its name probably derives from the Greek for “quail”, and it was the site of a thriving Greek colony before its definitive fall to Rome in 212 BCE. At the regional museum, the Palazzo Bellomo, we examine the work of Antonello da Messina, a fine Sicilian painter who is credited with introducing oil painting to Italy and whose careful psychological portraits are a precursor of Caravaggio’s own work. After a visit to Ortigia’s mikvah, ceremonial Jewish baths of the 6th century, and the cathedral – whose exterior still preserves the massive Doric columns of an ancient Greek temple to Athena – we visit Santa Lucia alla Badia. This beautiful Baroque church is dedicated to Syracuse’s patron saint, local girl Lucy. Caravaggio’s Burial of St Lucy is now located here. Despite its poor state of preservation, the work gives us a clear sense of Caravaggio’s emotional and anatomical sensitivities. The Sea Cloud II departs Syracuse in the early evening. Overnight Sea Cloud II (B, L, D)

Thursday 6 october taormina

Since the 19th century, Taormina has been popular with well-heeled European tourists. They came for the sun, sea and permissive lifestyle. The Sea Cloud II arrives at nearby Giardini Naxos early this morning, and we join a coach for a walking tour of the town’s historic centre, perched on a ridge above the straits of Messina and with superb views across to Mount Etna. A highlight is our visit to the Greco-Roman theatre. Returning to the Sea Cloud II, we lunch on board. After an afternoon talk, the rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight Sea Cloud II (B, L, D)

Friday 7 october the Aeolian islands

Legend has it that the god of the winds, Aeolus, had his home here, and from the Neolithic the islands have been of strategic interest, thanks to deposits of volcanic obsidian. After a talk, we arrive at Lipari at lunchtime and meet our local guide for a mini-bus tour of the island. Weather permitting, there are spectacular views across to the other islands. Sea Cloud II departs in the early evening. Overnight Sea Cloud II (B, L, D)

Saturday 8 october magnificent palermo

We arrive in Palermo’s port in the early morning, and meet our coach for a full day of sight-seeing. We begin with a visit to the Baroque oratory of Santa Zita, a virtuoso work in white stucco by sculptor Serpotta, in order

On the Caravaggio trail Aboard the sea cloud II

to get a sense of the environment in which Caravaggio’s lost Nativity would have hung. The work decorated the nearby Oratory of San Lorenzo but was stolen in 1969. It has never resurfaced, leading to theories that it was taken for the personal collection of a Mafia don. After an early lunch, we transfer to the Palazzo dei Normanni, which we visit with a local guide. This stunning complex was the heart of Sicily’s Arab Norman culture, a syncretistic blend of Muslim, Byzantine and French influences that led to some of the most majestic mosaics of medieval Italy. In the afternoon, we return to the ship. Overnight Sea Cloud II (B, L, D)

Sunday 9 october salt pans and sailors

Early this morning we arrive in Trapani, a small harbour on Sicily’s west coast. Among the salt pans and their windmills is the island of Mozia, a former Carthaginian settlement, which thrived in the 5th to 3rd centuries BCE. The island also houses a small museum with some unique pieces. It is also associated with the Marsala wine production of the English Whitaker family. We return to the Sea Cloud II for lunch and the afternoon is at leisure. Overnight Sea Cloud II (B, L, D)

Monday 10 october at sea

Today is spent at sea: much of the day should be under sail. Weather permitting you should also be able to journey out from the ship on zodiac dinghies to get a view of the Sea Cloud II under sail. In the afternoon there will be a background talk. Overnight Sea Cloud II (B, L, D)

Tuesday 11 october Sorrento and the amalfi coast

After a morning talk, we arrive at Sorrento at lunch time. We meet our coach for a panoramic bus tour of the Amalfi coast, one of Italy’s most scenic coastlines. Steep limestone cliffs meet a crystal clear sea, providing an unforgettable experience. The highlight of our trip is Amalfi, once a thriving seafaring republic with some of the earliest surviving maritime codes. The superb bronze doors of the Arab-Norman cathedral were cast in Constantinople. We return to Sorrento in the early evening, where there is the opportunity to eat dinner on shore or have an after-dinner gelato and passeggiata. Overnight Sea Cloud II (B, L, D)

Wednesday 12 october Caravaggio & the Neapolitan underground

We arrive in Naples early this morning, and have a coach transfer to our hotel where we leave our bags and continue with our touring. With our local guide, we spend the morning in Naples’s magnificent Archaeological Museum, a treasure trove of staggering artefacts, such as wall-paintings, mosaics, statuary and everyday household objects dug up at various ancient sites on the Bay of Naples. The Farnese sculpture collection is particularly interesting, given its influence on sculptors such as Michelangelo and Bernini. After time for lunch, we continue to the Palazzo

Images anti-clockwise top left: the striking facade of Syracuse Cathedral; Taormina’s theatre; a view over the Aeolian Islands; the jewel tones of the Amalfi Coast; the Arab-Norman Palatine Chapel, Palermo

Zevallos-Stigliano, where the highlight of the collection is one of Caravaggio’s last works. The Martyrdom of St Ursula is a study in human contrasts, from the grim violence of the soldiers to the calm acceptance of the dying saint. The afternoon and early evening are at leisure. Schedule permitting, we attend a performance at the San Carlo opera house tonight. Overnight Naples (B)

Thursday 13 october Neapolitan painting after caravaggio

We begin the morning at the cathedral of Naples, dedicated to local saint Januarius. His blood still liquefies each year as a sign of the city’s continuing fortunes, and Jusepe De Ribera’s fine altarpiece of Januarius Liberated from the Furnace is a good indication of the impact of Caravaggio’s work in Naples. Caravaggio fled here after legal run-ins in Rome and Genoa. At the Pio Monte della Misericordia, we admire his Seven Works of Mercy, one of his most complex and powerful works. It is still displayed alongside the works commissioned at the same time, giving us an insight into his reception by Neapolitan contemporaries. After a walking tour of the centro storico and a break for lunch, we transfer to the museum of Capodimonte, located in the vast former hunting lodge of the Bourbon King Charles VII. Capodimonte now houses Naples’ most important fine arts museum, with masterpieces by Tuscans Simone Martini, Masaccio and Botticelli, alongside works by Mantegna, Bellini, Titian and Raphael. The strongly Hispano-Flemish taste of the Spanish viceroys is also reflected in works by Caravaggio, De Ribera and El Greco. After our visit, we return to the hotel by coach and the evening is at leisure. Overnight Naples (B)

Friday 14 october the Borghese gallery

We check out of our hotel in the morning and travel to Rome, stopping on the way for an early lunch. In the afternoon, we have a booked visit to the Borghese Gallery, one of the best small museums in the world. The gallery, dating from the 17th century, contains the collection of the aristocratic Borghese family. As well as superb classical works and fine paintings by artists such as Titian and Raphael, the gallery is renowned for its Baroque sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, such as the astounding Apollo and Daphne. For us, a highlight of the visit is the excellent collection of Caravaggio’s, with an early Boy with a Basket of Fruit, a self-portrait (as Sick Bacchus) and a wonderful St Jerome for us to compare with the one we saw in Malta. We then continue on to our hotel. There is a light dinner near the hotel. Overnight Rome (B, D)

Saturday 15 october paupers, pilgrims & penitents

Our hotel is located in the heart of Caravaggio’s own neighbourhood, where the artist lived, loved, worked and fought! After a morning talk, we walk to Santa Maria del Popolo, where we see two of his most powerful canvases. The Conversion of Saul and The Martyrdom of Paul are explosive meetings of the everyday, human world with the inexplicable and divine, and their emotional impact on the viewer is strong. We also view Caravaggio’s work in the context of his respected rival, Annibale

On the Caravaggio trail Aboard the sea cloud II

Carracci, whose Assumption of the Virgin is a contemporary but radically different work, and still hangs between Caravaggio’s two panels. After time for lunch and some shopping, we continue on foot to the church of San Luigi dei Francesi, where Caravaggio was responsible for the canvases in the Contarelli Chapel. Spiritual conversion is the subject matter here, too, but the quiet nature of The Calling of Matthew is overtaken by the whirling motion of the saint’s violent martyrdom. Nearby is Caravaggio’s Pilgrim Madonna, in the church of Sant’Agostino. The church was a favourite place of congregation for the large community of prostitutes in the area, and Caravaggio shocked his contemporaries by giving his beautiful Madonna the face of a well-known working woman. The evening is at leisure. Overnight Rome (B)

Sunday 16 october Caravaggio and his roman patrons

We begin the morning with a visit to the Casinò dell’Aurora, the only structure surviving of a large pleasure palace owned by Caravaggio’s patron Cardinal del Monte. Caravaggio’s frescoes here are the painter’s only surviving works in this medium. (NB: if permission is not granted to visit, we will survey the Caravaggio’s in the Palazzo Barberini collection as an alternative.) After time for lunch at Piazza Tritone – and an optional visit to the fascinating Capuchin catacombs, where disarticulated skeletons are creatively used for ghoulish and baroque wall decorations – we continue to the lovely Galleria Doria-Pamphilj, the elegant palace of a distinguished Genoese-Roman family. Two of Caravaggio’s works are here – the Penitent Magdalene and The Rest on the Flight to Egypt – and they share a unique approach to perspective, proportion and composition. Velazquez’s celebrated Portrait of Innocent X and the landscapes of Claude Lorraine, also part of the extensive collection, give us a sense of the international interpretations of Caravaggio’s style and technique, and the grand surrounds of the palace are a fitting conclusion to our journey. In the evening we meet for our farewell dinner in one of Rome’s best restaurants. Overnight Rome (B, D)

Monday 17 october Departure

There will be a number of transfers to Rome’s Fiumicino airport, depending on passengers’ ongoing travel plans. You might also like to extend your stay in central Rome.
