Torque Rise. The engine is designed forhigh torque rise at middle rpm, a featurethat is especially beneficial for heavy-duty use.
Cylinder Block. The cylinder block iscast iron for improved wear resistance.The upper part is laser hardened toreduce oil consumption and internalcomponent wear.
Maintenance. The oil level gauge, oilfilter, fuel filter and priming pump arelocated on the right side of the upperstructure for easy maintenance. Theengine oil filter and fuel filter changeintervals have been extended.
Crankshaft. The eight balance, one-piece, forged crankshaft enhancesbalance and decreases vibration and isinduction hardened to improve abrasionresistance.
Pistons. Heat resistant aluminum alloypistons have a short compressionheight, reducing weight and improvingefficiency.
Fuel Consumption. The 3064 T enginehas the best fuel consumption in thisclass of diesel engines. It featuresimproved thermal efficiency andreduced friction resistance betweenpiston and liners.
Air Intake Heating. Air intake heating isstandard on the 311C U for easier coldstarts.

Component Layout. The 311C Uhydraulic system was designed toprovide a high level of efficiency. Withall major components located closetogether, shorter tubes and lines areneeded, resulting in less friction loss inthe lines and reduced pressure drops.
Hydraulic Cross Sensing System.Improves productivity with fasterimplement speeds and quicker, strongerpivot turns.
Automatic Boom and Swing Priority.For simpler operation, work mode andpower mode switches have beeneliminated. Instead, the automatic boomand swing priority function selects thebest mode, based on joystickmovement.
Stackable Valves. Up to two additionalcontrol valves can be added to the maincontrol valve of the 311C U to runadditional tools.
Controllability. The hydraulic systemoffers precise control to the 311C U,reducing operator fatigue, improvingoperator effectiveness and efficiency,which ultimately translates intoenhanced performance.
Auxiliary Hydraulic Valve. For furtherversatility, a dedicated hammer (singlefunction), thumb (double function), andcombined auxiliary hydraulics areoffered on the 311C U.
Hydraulic Snubbers. Hydraulic cylindersnubbers at the rod-end of boomcylinders and both ends of the stickcylinders cushion shocks, reduce soundand increase cylinder life.
HydraulicsCaterpillar hydraulics deliver power and control to keep material moving at high volume.
Undercarriage and StructuresDurable undercarriage absorbs stresses and provides excellent stability.

Main Frame. The rugged main frame isdesigned for maximum durability andefficient use of materials.
Grease Lubricated Track. New greaselubricated seals protect the track linkand deliver long track link pin andbushing inner wear life.
Travel Motors. Automatic speedselection enables the machine toautomatically change up and down fromhigh and low speeds in a smooth,controlled manner.
Idler Guard. An idler guard, which isintegral to the track roller frame isstandard. This guard helps maintaintrack alignment while traveling orworking on slopes.
Blades. For further versatility and tomeet more general purposes needs,three blade width options are availableon the 311C U.
Shorter Tail Swing Radius.The 311C U, with its reduced tail swingradius, is easier to operate while againstwalls and in tight areas, reducing the concern of the rear of the machineduring operation.The shorter tailmeasurement allows flexibility for idealuse in urban construction, loggingroads, and other space restricted sites.Carbody Design and Track Roller
Frames. X-shaped, box-section carbodyprovides excellent resistance totorsional bending. Robot-welded trackroller frames are press-formed,pentagonal units to deliver exceptionalstrength and service life.
Structures. The 311C U structuralcomponents and undercarriage are thebackbone of the machine’s durability.
Rollers and Idlers. Sealed andlubricated track rollers, carrier rollersand idlers provide excellent service life,to keep the machine in the field longer.

Operator StationDesigned for simple operation, the 311C U operator station allows the operator to focus onproduction.
Operator Environment. The 311C Uoperator work station is quiet withergonomic control placement andconvenient adjustments, low lever andpedal effort, ergonomic seat design andhighly efficient ventilation.
Monitor. The 311C U’s newly designed and conveniently located monitor allowsthe operator to monitor machine performancewhile sitting in a comfortable position.
Automatic Boom and Swing PriorityFunction. For simpler operation, workmode and power mode switches have beeneliminated. Instead, the automatic boomand swing priority function selects the bestmode, based on joystick movement.
Redesigned Layout. Redesigned cab layoutemphasizes simplicity and ease of use.Right-hand wall and console provide easyaccess to all switches, dials and controls.
Travel Controls. A large rubber-coveredfootrest at the side of the travel pedalsallows the foot to easily grip the pedal. The travel lever stroke and force have beenenhanced to improve the 311C U’s finecontrollability, making the machine easierto operate.
Seat. A new seat with a two-tone coloroffers two types of cushions - soft and firm- for operator comfort. The reclining knobis located at the right-side of the seat foreasier reclining adjustment.
Automatic Climate Control. Fully automaticclimate control adjusts temperature andflow and determines which air outlet is bestin each situation.
Skylight. A large polycarbonate skylightdelivers excellent natural lighting and goodventilation. Standard sliding sunshadeprotects from direct sunlight.

Front Linkage. Front linkage variationson the 311C U allow for the use of one boom and two sticks. Using thesecombinations improves the general-purpose versatility of the 311C U by suiting it to a diverse range ofapplications.
Boom. The boom on the 311C U isdesigned to provide maximum diggingcapability. Caterpillar booms aremanufactured with high-tensile steel forupper, lower and side plates and robotwelded for consistent quality.
Stick. Two sticks are available on the 311C U. The customer’s workingenvelope and bucket capacity needsdetermine their stick choice.
Boom and Stick Construction.Built for performance and long servicelife, Caterpillar booms and sticks arelarge, welded, box-section structureswith thick, multi-plate fabrications inhigh-stress areas.
Bucket Linkage. The bucket linkage onthe 311C U includes the bucket cylinder,idler link and power links.
Linkage Bearings. New bearingtechnology has extended the frontlinkage greasing intervals for allbearings.

ServiceabilitySimplified service and maintenance features save you time and money.
Air Filter Compartment. The air filterfeatures a double-element constructionfor superior cleaning efficiency. Whenthe air cleaner plugs, a red warning signappears on the indicator near the aircleaner.
Ground Level Service. The design andlayout of the 311C U was made with theservice technician in mind. Manyservice locations are easily accessible atground level allowing criticalmaintenance to get done quickly andefficiently.
Pump Compartment. A service door onthe right side of the upper structureallows ground-level access to the pumpand pilot filter.
Capsule Filter. The hydraulic returnfilter, a capsule filter, is situated outsidethe hydraulic tank. This filter preventscontaminants from entering the systemwhen hydraulic oil is changed andkeeps the operation clean.
Anti-Skid “Punched-Star” Plate. Anti-skid punched-star plate covers themaintenance walkway to preventslipping. The plate can be removed forcleaning.
Engine Inspection. The engine can beaccessed from the upper structure orfrom under the machine. The engineand pump compartment are separatedby a steel wall.
Extended Service Intervals. 311C Uservice and maintenance intervals havebeen extended to reduce machineservice time and increase machineavailability.
Radiator Compartment. The left rearservice door allows easy access to theengine radiator and the oil cooler. Areserve tank and drain cock are attachedto the radiator for simplifiedmaintenance.

Buckets, Quick Couplers and Work ToolsThe 311C U has designed-in flexibility to help bring total solutions for efficiency to your jobs.
Quick Couplers. Caterpillar Quick Couplers enable theoperator to simply release one work tool and pick up another.Your hydraulic excavator becomes highly versatile. To suityour business and application needs, Caterpillar offers twodifferent types of Quick Couplers.
CW-Series Dedicated Quick Coupler. The dedicated CW-Series quick coupler enables a quick tool exchange whilemaintaining top machine performance. It is available in ahydraulic and spindle version.� The hydraulic version is available in a standard
and a narrow version and makes it very easyfor the operator to switch tools withouthaving to leave the cab.
� The spindle version is a user-friendly mechanical version that canlater be easily converted into thehydraulic version if required. The spindleversion is also available in the narrow andstandard version.
� A lifting hook is added to the dedicated Quick Coupler for maximum lift capacity.
Pin Grabber Plus Quick Coupler. This hydraulically controlledPin Grabber Plus quick coupler makes changing buckets andother popular work tools simple and fast. The Pin Grabber Pluscoupler mounts to the end of the stick and allows buckets,clamshells and other work tools to be used with little or nomodification.� Each model fully adjusts to different pin
spreads of various tools regardless ofmanufacturer – it is the only couplerthat accommodates a wide range ofwork tool makes and models.
� Pin-on assembly makes couplerinstallation and removal fast and easy.
� Coupler retains the same bucket opening and closing angles.� Buckets can be reversed for greater flexibility when working
around and under obstructions.� Integrated lift eye.
Quick Coupler hydraulic Circuits for CAT 308C CR are availableas retrofit kits. Caterpillar offers two kits that are dedicated toCW and Pin Grabber Plus coupler. Ask your Cat dealer for morespecific information.
Buckets. A wide variety of buckets help optimize machine performance. Purpose designed andbuilt to Caterpillar’s high durabilitystandards.
Excavation Bucket. Digs and loads soft to medium materials such as clay and earth.Features weld on tip adapters, hardened cuttingedge and side bars.
Extreme Excavation Bucket. Digs and loadscompact/abrasive materials like earth/rock,sand/clay, sand/gravel, coal, chalk and lowabrasion ores. Features abrasion resistant steel for all wear parts.
Ditch Cleaning Bucket. Wide, light bucket used mainly with long reach configurations to clean waterbeds and banks.
Work Tools. Work Tools for 311C U areonly available ex Caterpillar Work Tools &Services (NL) and ex Caterpillar ImpactProducts Ltd. (UK). For any specific worktools needs not covered in machine price listplease contact your local dealer.
Shear. Caterpillar's steel cutting shear meetsyour requirements in scrap recycling as well asprimary demolition and offers excellent flexibility.
Multi-Grapple. The Multi-Grapple is the ideal tool for stripping,sorting, handling and loading.
