On that day the Allies and the Germans signed an armistice, or a peace treaty. In 1954, after the Korean War, President Eisenhower changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day World War II, or the Second World War (often abbreviated as WWII or WW2), was a global war that was underway by 1939 and ended in 1945. We celebrate this holiday with parades, speeches, and by placing flowers on the graves of soldiers. There are special ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C. Banks, schools, and post offices are closed for the day.
