Vybrant Awards Evening

Thursday 6 February 2020

And a special prize called a VBA (not an MBA!), the Vybrant Brand Ambassador, was won by Carl von Ludwig, a great supporter of Vybrant and always to be seen in our branded clothing.

Wife, Ceri, won a prize for the best HAT, which was a dressage arena with all the letters, set up to scale inside a carboard box (originally filled with alcoholic drink we note) sitting on top of Ceri’s head with a picture of yours truly, Editor and Judge, sitting at C. WOW, that was quite something! Where’s the Savanna?

Great Vybrant team effort as usual with

Vybrant members Lilian Mohr, Brittany Harrison and Judith Harrison, who ran around like busy bees setting up the Club House.

Vybrant President, Sue Horne, summarized the

activities planned for 2020, and then opened the floor to encourage ideas from members.

These included the following:

* Mounted prize giving to be done at the upcoming Vybrant Show in order that grooms could be acknowledged (unmounted prize giving means that the groom is left holding the horse!) This worked well (see report further on in this Newsletter).

Oh dear, we got rained out on 8 February! The clinic on 8 February was postponed due to torrential rain and took place on 15 February. This year, our plans are to have a variety of Clinic Leaders representing a number of disciplines, all of which can benefit from basic training. There were nine Level 2 participants (walk and trot off the lead rein) with each combination receiving individual feedback.

DON”T FORGET! Pony Rider/Children and Junior Membership of Vybrant Dressage Club is FREE!

Our Clinic Leaders were Janet Dewar Pitts, BHS and SANEF Instructor and Advanced Dressage Rider, and Claire Nadin, successful show jumper in Juniors and now DSA Provincial A (Medium level) Dressage Judge.

Grateful thanks to Penny van Asche for the use of her beautiful venue, to Rene van Sohn for providing the sound system and Midfeeds for the goody bags.

Niall Quirk February/March 2020 Clinic

It just grows and grows! This time, over 190 lessons, held as usual courtesy of Arina Petit at her beautiful yard in Bridle Park, where horses, riders, and spectators were treated like gold dust.

Dominey Alexander and Daddy Cool. “It’s an honour to have a coach of Niall’s calibre here to help us with up to date training methods. I really like how relaxed and tension free he gets the horses going, creating more elasticity and balanced movement in the horses. Thank you, Vybrant Dressage, for bringing Niall to South Africa on a continuing basis.”

Kerry Plumstead and Gombera’s Olympia.

“Niall is a phenomenal coach – refreshing and inspiring.. He uses simple but technical exercises to improve my horse’s way of going. Every second spent under his watchful eye has been of great value.”

All the way from Mpumalanga, Helle Wagner brought two horses. Pictured left with her imported Danish warmblood, Smilla. Says Helle “Niall has helped me to feel how the way I move my body can have such a positive influence on the way my horse is going . I feel very motivated going forward.”

Arina Petit riding Shane Gershow’s Santino . Says Arina “Thanks so much to Shane for allowing me to ride her horse. As usual, riding with Niall is an absolute inspiration and as always, so grateful for the opportunity”

Lovely evening after a successful training day in Potchefstroom at Adelprag with Niall Quirk. Thank you so much Niall for your guidance, delivered so passionately with amazing wisdom over the years.

Variety is the spice of life!

Vybrant members having a lot of fun in February!

Mr. Dom Pedro and Chloe Mohr,

part of the Vybrant Rising Stars

Programme, who were Reserve Supreme Champion Young Child’s Pony.

Too gorgeous!!

Horse of the Year 2020 at Kyalami Equestrian Park

FEI Medium Tour Horse, Rathmore Caprice, aka the

Precious Pony, with Siobhan Records, winning the General

Breed Working Riding Championship

FEI Small Tour Horse, the inimitable “Woody”,

Wow’s Yellowood, owned by Patrick Brown, immaculately

turned out and ridden by Georgina Roberts, ended up third in the General Breed

Show Riding Horse.

And then there was the Donkey Parade! Except there were only three donkeys! Two of these were the miniature donkeys

owned by Vybrant member, Arina Petit, immaculately turned

out as usual. The black one on the left is Olaf, who proved to be quite a handful to hang on to (!) and did not respond to the Half Halt, and the more reserved Dorothea, the grey one, on the right, who behaved beautifully! Lovely idea. Hope there are more next year to honour these very special members of the equine community. (Beautiful photographs from Denford Studios)

Elena Jankowitz and Karen du Preez’s Lusitano stallion, Bolero performed a Pas de Deux at the SA Lipipzzaner’s special Valentines Day Show (pic left) and

Candice Hobday’s Andalusian Stallion, Arco 360 Esclavo FM, performed a special solo to Love Songs, with music and choreography by Yours Truly (such fun!), where he was able to show his talents for piaffe and passage.

Introducing Velvet

“Velvet knows everything fancy, has a PhD in Dressage while I am still trying to pass Elementary! After 7 rides she’s taught me that it’s actually far more technical than my previously preferred method – pray your way to canter and a transition – that just does not work. When I get it right, she makes me feel like we’ve won a ticket to Tokyo. Her ears are floppy, her eyes so kind. She’s gorgeous beyond words – and she gives absolutely nothing for free.

Meet Velvet, a one in a million horse. So blessed to be taught by her under the watchful eyes of the Stephan Peters Dressage Team here in the USA. Thank you Shannon Peters and Emma Weinert O’Rourke for trusting me and making this happen.”

Thank you Amy Goker Neave - have fun in your journey to Grand Prix!

Rebecca Tait and

AgbeNoir’s Berghof Fahrenheit had a great win in the Elementary

class with 69.8%

Shaun Baker cleaned up in the Prelim classes with two 1sts with 70% + scores on Max Oosthuizen’s beautiful Adela Quantissima. Picture courtesy Tanneth Bern.

Congratulations to Margarita Theodorou for receiving a Certificate of Honour from the Hanoverian Verband, who awarded her mare, Compton House Flyinga, the title of Hanoverian Premium Candidate. What a stunning picture! gorgeous!

‘Rocky’ has arrived!

Rocinante XVII is the newest addition to the Calvero PRE (Andalusian Stud) owned by Candice Hobday. This ANNE (Spanish Breed Federation) approved 16.3h pure bred PRE Stallion arrived in South Africa in the first week in March. Candice, we wish you lots of happy hours together.

It is now some years since the half marks were introduced, i.e. 6.5, 7.5 etc. If a whole mark is awarded, it must always be recorded with .0, i.e. 5.0, 7.0 etc, not only for the specific movement but also for the collective marks. If this is not filled in correctly, this opens the door to the possibility of marks being changed by anyone involved in the dressage competition - judges, scribes, recorders and competitors, which could seriously affect final results of competitions. If such actions are reported to this committee, and correct protocol is followed for complaints of this nature following investigation, disciplinary action will result. It is the judge’s responsibility to ensure this is done before the test sheet is handed to the recorders/auditors. Under no circumstances should the recorders/auditors start to calculate the test if they notice that the .0 is missing from the whole marks. This test must be immediately returned to the judge for correction. Any competitor who collects a dressage test after the competition results have been announced, and the .0 is missing from the whole marks, should immediately take this test to the Show Director who should alert the judge immediately. It is up to the Show Holding Body to ensure that all scribes and recorders adhere strictly to this procedure.

The Directive below has been issued by the DSA Judges Portfolio and applies to everyone - judges, scribes, recorders, coaches, riders and show holding bodies.

It has recently come to the notice of the DSA Judges Portfolio Committee that the marks on dressage tests are not being filled in correctly .

Judith Harrison will be in charge of the Development Portfolio on the Vybrant Council. No stranger to the dressage community, Judith brings with her many years of valuable knowledge and experience running the Dressage South Africa Office. Currently she works at Western Shoppe as Manager of the Wholesale Division.

Two new Vybrant Council Members

Lilian Mohr is passionate about horses and dressage and is currently competing at Novice level. She heads up the Legal Compliance and Operations Division for a short term insurance company in the cyber insurance space and has recently completed her LLB. In addition to her role as the Vybrant Athletes Representative, she will also be the Vybrant Representative on the Gauteng Provincial Council.

As most of you will know from our Facebook post earlier this month, I am sadly going to have to give up my work with Vybrant. This has turned into a full time job, and as all of you know, I am always trying to add that extra special piece of ‘pzazz’ to all my work which necessitates quite a bit of time and energy! I need some “me” time. Not getting any younger!! From the very first day, when we were choosing branded clothing, to the heart stopping moment of the special video I created for the opening of the very first Africa Dressage Forum, it has been an amazing journey. Vybrant will continue to go from strength to strength.

There will be a Newsflash to all members telling you who will be responsible for what going forward, plus contact details, but just to tell you that the [email protected] email will be discontinued at the beginning of April. Thank you to every person that has supported me, Council Members, Suppliers, wonderful Sponsors and most important you, the members. I have been very lucky to make many more friends and colleagues during this journey. Special thanks to Brittany Harrison who has, behind the scenes, been a big part of my success with her administrative support and big smile! I am not going anywhere (except maybe to bed a bit earlier!) and am hopefully going to continue to do more judging – always a continuing and exciting learning experience.
