West of MemphisRating 15 I Running Time 150 minsDirected by Amy Berg I Starring Damien Wayne Echols, JasonBaldwinGenre Reality Drama

In 1994, in the town of West Memphis, Arkansas, three teenagers were accused of enacting satanic rituals and subsequently convicted of murderingthree eight-year-old boys. Their confessions were inconsistent, the legitimacyof prosecution witnesses was spurious, but for 18 years the judge whopresided over the initial court case denied successive retrial bids. Amy Berg, director of Academy Award-nominated Deliver Us From Evil, was makingthis riveting documentary when the court finally succumbed to increasingpublic and legal pressure and ‘freed’ The West Memphis 3. One of thefalsely accused, Damien Echols, is a producer of this film, along with campaigner Lorri Davis (his wife), and filmmakers Peter Jackson and FranWalsh. This unexpected collaboration accounts not only for the unswervingfocus of the film, but also the unprecedented access which enables Berg toreveal new material about the well documented case and to convincinglyposit the most likely culprit.

HitchcockRating 12A I Running Time 98 minsDirected by Sacha GervasiStarring Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett JohanssonGenre DramaFilms about filmmakers are risky territory, but Gervasi pulls it off triumphantly with hisaffectionate, wryly incisive take on Hitchcock. With arguably his best movies behindhim, Hitch was riddled with self-doubt while making what would become one of hisgreatest works, Psycho. The film explores both this and his heavy dependence on hiswife, Alma Reville. Played by a majestic Hopkins in a fat suit and a mousy yet steelyMirren, the two central characters carry off a great double act, with fine support fromJohansson and James D’Arcy as Psycho’s two stars, Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins.Gervasi’s film reflects both the pressures of 1960s movie-making – even when you’re amaster of your universe – and the secrets of sustaining a working marriage.

FlightRating 15 I Running Time 138 minsDirected by Robert ZemeckisStarring Mellissa Leo, Don Cheadle, Denzel WashingtonGenre DramaThe first 15 minutes of Flight are a fearsome white-knuckle ride, as hung over CaptWhip Whitaker (Washington) desperately tries to land an out-of-control passengerplane without killing all on board – but in fact the real drama has only just begun.Although he is heralded as a hero, Whitaker’s drink and drug problems threaten to put him behind bars for the rest of his life, despite the love of a bad-woman-gone-good(a highly convincing Reilly) and a hot-shot lawyer hired by his union (Cheadle, suitably uptight). Zemeckis is on tip-top form here, keeping us guessing through various twists and turns, while mixing in some hilarious light relief from Goodman as Whitaker’s louche ‘chemical advisor’. Washington is absolutely magnificent in arguably his most complexrole since American Gangster.

Cloud AtlasRating 15 I Running Time 172 minsDirected by Andy Wachowski, Tom Tykwer and Lana WachowskiStarring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim BroadbentGenre Drama

David Mitchell’s 2004 novel was long considered un-filmable, but Tykwer (The International) and the Wachowski siblings (The Matrix)doggedly pursued $100m in financing to create this epic meditation on the power of the soul. Six individuals’ stories are initially toldchronologically, beginning in the early 1800s with Adam Ewing(Sturgess) being poisoned by his doctor (Hanks). The action swiftlymoves to 2144, when a servile cyborg (Korean star Doona Bae) is trying to achieve human status, and then to a post-apocalyptic islandwhere a bitter tribesman (Hanks again) guards guilty secrets. Throughclever, often blindingly fast cutting and abundant CGI, the various characters are ultimately connected. With a stellar cast playing severalroles – often unrecognisably so – Cloud Atlas is a towering, engrossingachievement.
