Before the Green Revolution, it was feared thatmillions of People in India would die of hunger. However, the Green Revolution within a few yearsshowed its impact with the introduction of newvarieties, modern techniques of farming, chemicalfertilizers, synthetic pesticides, germicides, herbicidesand better management of seed. The country, whichgreatly relied on imports for its food supply, reduced itsimports every passing year. In 1990s, India had surplusfood grains that enabled the country to rise as anexporter of food grains.
As the time went by, extensive dependence onchemical farming began to show its darker side. Theland began to lose its fertility there by demanding largerquantities of fertilizers. As a consequence, the incidenceof insect/pests and weeds increased resulting inevolution of resistant biotypes thereby putting pressureon the farmer’s side to use stronger and costlierpesticides. Due to increased cost of farming, farmersgradually fell into the trap of money lenders, who
continuously exploited and forced many to quit.Realizing the dangerous consequences of
chemical farming and increasing the concern for healthrelated issues, there has been a paradigm shift in foodpreferences, which are now strongly tilted towards theorganic products. Fortunately, climatic and socio-economic conditions of India favours organic farmingand the potential can be harnessed simply byencouraging farmers and providing necessary marketsupport.
Agriculture has potential to accommodate and/orgive employment to a large number of people. However, the present situation of the agriculture is very chaoticand forced to search out the solutions for producing safeand healthy food. In this issue, organic agriculture isgetting wider recognition as sustainable alternative tochemical input based system. Although in the marketplace to provide clarity on the organic claim, the organicagriculture requires certification for the consideration asorganic food. Thus the programme is proposed with thefollowing objectives:• Create new modules in organic farming for
employment generation• Curtail use of synthetic inputs in farming.• Resolve issues of farmers/ producers/ stakeholders
related to organic farming• Develop linkages on organic produce among
producers, markets and consumers.• Simplify process on certification of organic produce
• Problems and perspectives in organic farming• Sustainable employment generation after COVID 19• Opportunity for self sufficiency in the field through
climate resilient farming• Sustainable organic module for income generation after
COVID 19• Use of ITKs and innovations in organic farming• Market channels for organic produce• Certification of organic inputs and products• Role of ICT in creation of demand for organic food
products and inputs
