1 Introduction
Sustainable Energy and Technology Management Pvt. Ltd (SETM) has prepared this Draft Report on “Market Analysis on Electricity Generation Technologies from Biogas”. SETM has submitted the Final Report to Biogas Sub Component of National Rural & Renewable Energy Program (NRREP)/Alternative Energy Promotion Centre-AEPC as per the contract agreement on date 15th February 2014. The Government of Nepal (GoN) and External Development Partners supporting Nepal's rural and renewable energy sector has resulted in National Rural and Renewable Energy Programme (NRREP) to be implemented by AEPC for five years from mid‐July 2012 to mid‐July 2017 in a single programme modality. Biogas is the prominent sub‐component and NRREP targets to install 130,000 Domestic Biogas, 1250 Community and Institutional Biogas. NRREP has also introduced Waste to Energy for thermal and electricity production.
1.1 Background Biogas product diversification and innovation of domestic biogas sector as well as introducing biogas in the business enterprises are not yet started in Nepal with clear strategy. Indeed, there is a necessity to introduce product innovation for enhancing the efficiency, durability and compatibility of biogas technology for new market segments like institutional biogas and introducing financial product development which will ensure timely disbursement of credit facilities through financial streams like climate investment and RET products insurance, will cover the post installation cares, maintenance of biogas units and thereby, promoting the sector. Besides, issues around equitable distribution, productive end-uses of the gas and slurry, and sustainability of the private sector are also major concerns. So far, little has been done, and in the upcoming programmes in the renewable energy sector, viz., National Rural and Renewable Energy Programme (NRREP). Although there is still lack of sufficient information, Nepal has a good potential for commercial based biogas plants. Some of the potential industries for large scale biogas plants includes poultry farms, cow farms, pig farms, slaughter houses, agro processing industries, schools, housing complex etc. Due to lack of technical know-how and proper up front financing mechanism, commercial biogas plants are not developed much in Nepal. The gas produced from large-scale biogas plant can be optimally utilized in many ways. The gas can be directly used for heating purpose and/or can be optimally utilized to generate electricity by producing biogas in various enterprises and institutions. The gas after certain purification can be injected to the diesel generator and replace the fuel. Similarly, the gas can be used as input fuel for thermal generator to generate electricity. This will serve not only providing electricity, it also help to reduce the exposure of greenhouse gases and manage the waste. Scaling up the biogas sector in Nepal will favor the feasibility of the current use of biogas from cooking and heating purposes to electricity production. Lack of electricity is one of Nepal’s most pressing issues, affecting the economic development of the country and leading to the utilization

of fossil fuels, which harm the environment. Biogas used for electricity production purposes could represent a viable, environmentally sound alternative to fossil fuel powered generators, at the same time as act as means for fostering other productive end-uses. Furthermore, electricity production from biogas plants could be distributed to nearby communities, local business or industries, reducing the dependency on fossil fuels and increasing the availability of electricity during load shedding hours. In last couple of years, some discussions have been undergoing to use gas from the large scale biogas plants for generating electricity to meet their own demands. AEPC and SNV Nepal have conducted few studies in this regard. The power generation from gas generator is well known and proven technology in many other countries as well as Nepal. Therefore, there is a need for a market survey and analysis of technological options available for generation and distribution of electricity from biogas plant in Nepal.
1.2 Our Understanding on Development and Application of Biogas Generator Experiments on using biogas as a fuel for running internal combustion engines in general and for running generator in particularly have been conducted since the 1930s. So far, it has been spreaded to many countries in the world.
Biogas is a fuel that in Europe in general has primarily been regarded as a fuel suitable for electricity generation in gas engines. The solution of hybrid engine was successfully studied and applied. The two countries that account for the largest biogas production in Europe are Germany and England. The countries with the highest biogas production per capita are the UK, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
Presently, biogas generator are broadly developed and applied in many countries in the world, both developed countries and developing countries. The two countries that account for the largest biogas production in Asia are China and India. Biogas is used mostly for cooking, lighting and running power generator. At present, millions of biogas digesters have been constructed in China contributing in the increase of power yield and gradually replace the utilization of firewood for civil activities. A large number of Chinese companies have exported their products including biogas digesters to other countries. Similarly, India has been implementing the rural energy program since the 1990s. Under the program millions of biogas plants have been constructed, providing fuel for lighting, cooking and generating electricity.
Biogas generators are diversified in terms of engine, capacity and technical parameters (starting method, gas pressure, size, fuel consumption rate etc.). High capacity biogas generators are applied when biogas is supplied from big cities or the sewage treatment plants. Whereas, small and medium biogas generators are applied when biogas is supplied from domestic scale biogas plants at households or animal farms (normally, the digestion volume is less than 200 cubic meters). In Nepal, 2, 4, 6, 8 m3 sizes are domestic plants. Biogas electrification not applicable for domestic biogas plants, it is suggested to apply electrification projects only for large biogas plants.

Nepal pays high attention in saving and increasing the efficiency of energy utilization and improvement of environmental sustainability. Under this target, biogas has been main object of researches/studies as fuel for biogas generator. Few experiments/demonstration projects for biogas electrification have already been done however not established as a good market yet.
1.3 Objectives The main objective of the assignment as stated in the ToR is to conduct a market analysis study and recommend appropriate technological alternatives for electricity production and distribution from biogas in Nepal. More specifically, the study aims to identify the followings:
• Value chain study on biogas electrification technology and recommend suitable option for Nepal
• Develop a testing and commissioning plan of biogas electrification technology • And preparation of monitoring plan
1.4 Limitations of the Study The following were the major limitations of this study; The study was entirely based on the secondary information The information obtained were mostly from internet based The information available is limited. The difficulty lies with the vast and unlimited number
of items under the study. The cost details were fully relay on secondary source and short time was another
constrain.

2.2 Methodology The following methodologies were applied to conduct the study.
2.2.1 Determination of survey tools The study was conducted by applying the Rapid Market Appraisal (RMA) and Value Chain Analysis (in case of supply chain of biogas generator and accessories ). The RMA tool is appropriate for studies like this to have in a short time a good analysis and understanding of a market. A mix of qualitative and quantitative data types were researched and analyzed based on existing data available and understanding of the market by the SETM study team.
The study was focused to collect three different data set: primary data, secondary data and tertiary data. Primary Data were largely quantitative and collected through questionnaires/checklists.
This information was collected from biogas generator manufacturers/suppliers (retailers/distributors) and those institutions who have already done biogas electrification projects.
Secondary data were collected primarily through Internet searching and correspondences with various manufacturers, users.
Tertiary data were obtained from literature reviews of relevant studies/documents in other countries to get useful information for analysis.
2.2.2 Mapping of Supply Side of Biogas Generator and Accessories To analyze and develop appropriate technological option for biogas generation (up to 20 kWe), a mapping of potential suppliers, manufacturers, local dealers and existing distribution chains in the region (south/east Asian countries) were undertaken. The study team has conducted several interactions with regional manufacturers distributors /retailers/ agents (primarily China and India) and gathered information about the type of products being used, technical specification, efficiency and other specific requirements , major limitations for expansion of their business etc. The study also captured some other information like cost details, provision of after sale services and warranty/guaranty issues, availability of spare parts and their marketing channel. Similarly, the team has closely analyzed the possibility of transfer of technology (fully or partially).
2.2.3 Assessment of Biogas Electrification Technologies For the identification of the most suitable and cost-effective biogas treatment processes for engine use were analyzed in depth. Several factors such as H2S removal unit, biogas volumetric flow ranges, retention period, pressure, temperature and other processing units were considered.
To assess the best biogas generator sets; efficiency of technology, certification, detail electrification specifications with their instrumentation process, performance guarantee of all equipments etc are analyzed.
2.2.4 Supply Chain Analysis Based on the study objectives, the checklist was prepared to identify possible suppliers/dealers of those biogas treatment equipments within country or abroad as well. Also the study has

identified the possible suppliers of replacement parts/consumables or spare parts of the purposed system for both nationally or internationally. The supply chain mechanism of general types generators(diesel/petrol based) and other electrical equipments was studied and based on that reference a detail supply chain framework for biogas generators has been developed.
2.2.5 Preparation of Inventory After selection of biogas based engine-generator sets and associated equipments along with supply chain mechanism the list of suppliers both nationally and internationally has been prepared. For this purpose; SETM team has identified various types of suppliers through their freight forwarder, dealers and other directly concerned stakeholders. The list of suppliers include details of the following appliances with their specifications, cost, warranty/guarantee, customs/duties and other information. Engine-generator sets

2.2.6 Development of Testing and Commissioning Plan After analyzing all market segments, study team has prepared a plan for testing and commissioning. Basic requirements such as success criteria, monitoring system, after sales services etc are considered for the testing and commissioning plan preparation. The basic requirements for the verification and functional performance was analyzed to prepare the testing and commissioning plan. Similarly, the required tools and instruments such as Multimeter for electrical measurements, Ammeter, Power measurement transducer, Calibrated thermometer, flow meter, Miscellaneous hand tools are listed out during plan preparation. Furthermore; general criteria’s of monitoring such as safety, performance and intervention effects were studied. It also contains recommendations on monitoring instrumentation and quality control.

3 Analysis and Findings
3.1 Overview of large biogas development in Nepal A number of biogas plants have already been installed and practiced at community level. Several of those plants were used to run dual-fuel engine in the past. However, due to some social & managerial problems rather than technical, these community plants are not functional for a long period of time in Nepal. Nepal has over half century long history of research and promotion of biogas technology, initially with personal or private attempts. After establishment of Biogas Support Programme (BSP) under the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) in 1992 and creation of Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC) under the MoEST in 1996, the biogas promotional activities in Nepal has achieved significant momentum. Near about 300 institutional and 90 community size biogas plants installed throughout the country. (Source: SETM, 2012) Majority of these plants are constructed using the design GGC 2047 that is fundamentally underground fixed dome. Larger size biogas plants installed by various organizations without any policy guidelines prescribed for institutional biogas plants. It is essential for the country to invest, promote and construct many more community and institutional biogas plants. The various business segments have good potential for larger size biogas plants. It is essential to have a number of successful larger biogas plants in operation before a widespread dissemination. There is a growing interest for the installation of larger size biogas plants for commercial farms, business companies and institutions for utilizing alternative feedstock like sewerage/night soil, kitchen and vegetable wastes and other biodegradable materials. Indeed, there is a necessity to introduce product innovation for enhancing the efficiency, durability and compatibility of biogas technology for new market segments in potential sector of Nepal. The technological options available today can be optimally utilized to generate electricity by producing biogas in various enterprises and institutions. This can be done in various ways: inject the gas to the diesel generator and replace the fuel or install thermal generator and use the produced gas as an input fuel. This will serve not only providing electricity services to the farm, it also help to reduce the exposure of greenhouse gases and manage the waste. Some of the potential areas for large scale biogas plants includes poultry farms, cow farms, pig farms, slaughter houses, agro processing industries, schools, housing complex, army barrack ,hospital etc. Due to lack of technical know-how and proper up front financing mechanism, commercial biogas power generation projects are not developed yet in Nepal. AEPC has already carried out the detail feasibility studies of biogas power generation in different segments such as poultry farms, cow farms, slaughter houses etc. Similarly, SNV Nepal has initiated the biogas for business program in 2012. Based on the findings of those previous studies; the study team has identified the following sector as potential for biogas power generation in future. Table two shows the some potential segments for biogas power generation in Nepal.

Corporate or multinational companies/industries, Barracks, Prisons, Community hostels, schools/college, hospitals and other institutions are other potential sites for commercial biogas development in Nepal.
Source: SETM There are huge potential and significant benefits of commercial biogas plants against the current implementation of septic tanks, garbage dumping, incineration and traditional compost pit as well. The market study shows, there is an incredible potential of establishing biogas plants in large number of different business entities in commercial ways where copious bio-degradable wastes are available to produce biogas.
3.1.1 Biogas Electrification Status in Nepal In past, several community biogas plants was used to run a dual-fuel engine. These engines were procured from India (Kirloskar and Usha) and use a very simple gas carburetor and seem to be fairly robust and reliable. The gas from community biogas plants was used to run 5 to 8 HP engines mostly for agro-processing and in a few cases for generating electricity. Near about 30 numbers of such projects were already been established in Nepal although not working properly at this time. (Source: Devkota, 2009) Now both India and China has developed the engines which can fully run with biogas and there is no need of alternate fuel and there is need of CO2 scrubbing. The purpose of CO2 scrubbing unit is to remove the unwanted CO2 from raw biogas dissolving with water. Box 1: Biogas Electrification Project in Devghat, Chitwan
With the support from AEPC, the Universal Consultancy P. Ltd., Kathmandu had installed biogas generator in Yogi Narahari Nath Asram, Chitwan district of Nepal. There was already a 20 cum biogas plant feeding with cattle dung installed in 2059 BS. The overall management of installed system was done by Bageshwori Adhyadhmik Parishad. As provided information by Mr. Shanta Prasad Pokharel, president of Asram; biogas system is working but electrification process stopped after six months of establishment. The technical specification of installed biogas generator was as follows; Rated Power Output: kW 2.5 Gas Consumption: 0.8 - 0.9 Cum/KWH Methane in Biogas: 50 - 55% Lubrication Oil Capacity: 5 Ltr. No. of Cylinder: One Output Voltage: 230 Volt, 1 Phase Power factor: 0.8

Total cost of installation was NRs. 266,750.00. Desulfurising and dehydrating units were not installed in that scheme; that was the main reason for not running engine for longer period.

Recently, another biogas electrification project has been established in Shobhabhagawati, Kathmandu jointly by Kathmandu University and Water Aid Nepal. The general description of established project is given below:
Biogas generator set features: Capacity: 650 watt Output AC voltage: ac 220 V DC output: 12 V Rated current: 8.3 A Automatic voltage regulator 6.5 Hp Warranty: 1.5 years
The installed capacity of biogas generator is 650 Watt. Total installation cost of biogas electrification system is around Rs 3,50,000. Particularly, the cost of biogas generator set is Rs 2,50,000 including Tax/VAT and flight charge. The technical parts of the project were installed by Kathmandu University whereas Water Aid Nepal provided financial support. The size of biogas digester is 12 cubic meter. Till date, biogas electrification system is in operational condition. Basically it is used for lighting purpose in nearby households. Altogether 15 bulbs are connected and run nearly 3 to 4 hours per day if sufficient amount of gas is available. For the smooth operation of biogas generator there 11-12 KPa gas pressure is required. Local people are happy to have electricity from biogas in their households.
They use biogas desulfurizer for removal of hydrogen sulphide, but hydrogen sulphide decreases the biogas production up to 3 to 4 KPa, now desulfurizer unit is replaced. The cost of biogas desulfurizer is Rs 200. The gas generated from biogas generator is also used in cooking purpose.
3.2 Case study (Prefect Bio-Waste & Power Management Pvt. Ltd. In India ) Perfect Bio-Waste and Power Management Pvt. Ltd is the oldest organization in India working continuously in the field of energy generation such as BIO GAS/ BIO MASS and other renewable energy source. The selected project area are rural and interior parts of India.
The organization was already installed many bio-electrification project by using poultry waste, vegetable waste, cow dung and algae. Thus established projects are successfully run in around the India. The digester capacity for poultry waste was three hundred and ten meter cube; similarly digester capacity for cow dung was twenty five hundred meter cube; these are the some examples. The details about capacity, digester feed, power generation capacity, industry used, area and the commissioning year is provided in the Annex part.
The organization has the wide range of Biogas Generators from 3 KVA to 125 KVA, which are specifically to perform extreme weather condition and tough rural running condition. They are offering complete solution on renewable energies, have experience of more than 200 installation of biogas generators, provides more tested product.

3.3 Conceptual framework of Biogas Electrification The gas produced from an anaerobic process contains Methane, moisture Hydrogen Sulfide, Carbon dioxide and other impurities. The average calorific value of biogas is about 21-23.5 MJ/m³, so that 1 m³ of biogas corresponds to 0.5-0.6 litre diesel fuel or about 6 kWh (FNR, 2009). The biogas yield of a plant depends not only on the type of feedstock, but also on the plant design, fermentation temperature and retention time. Methane has a high calorific value in its pure stage. If the moistures and other impurities especially sulfide gas are properly separated the pure methane is suitable for Internal Combustion (IC). Once pure Methane is available in suitable quality and quantity it finds a wide scope of electricity generation.
Biogas generated from the digester is allowed to flow through moisture traps. This process condenses out the Moisture present in the gas. The gas is then allowed to counter flow in a specially designed Sulfide extractor. This filter drains out Balance Moisture along with the present sulfides. Treated gas is pressurized with the help of a primary compressor but if the gas is already pressurized, it is not required. The available pressure in large biogas plants might already be enough and a compressor might not be necessary. The filters mounted drain out any leftover moisture and Oil present post compression. The pressurized clean gas is then passed through a Physical Separation Device. The Physical Separation Device is a specially designed modern high pressure combined directional flow device for cleaning Biogas of its impurities like H2S,CO2 etc (Source: SETM, 2011). 3.4 Various technological options for Biogas power generation In the world market there is availability of biogas generators with different types and series, types of engine, capacity and technical parameters. Biogas generators are widely utilized in the world, both in developed and developing countries. The most challenging is the first stage of the generator selection: the combustion engine using the biogas as fuel. In assumption, biogas can be used as fuel in nearly all types of combustion engines, such as gas engines (Otto motor), diesel engines, gas turbines etc. There are different types of biogas generator sets available in the market (mostly in China) from 1 kW to 1000 kW range. These generators can be run purely from the gas produced from the biogas digester with necessary modifications. In the majority commercially run biogas power plants today, internal combustion motors have become the standard technology. The following types of engines are, in principle, well-suited for operating on biogas:
• Four-stroke diesel engines • Four-stroke spark-ignition engines • Converting diesel engines • Converting spark-ignition engines • Co-generation unit (electricity and heat utilization) • Turbines
In the market of India and China there are several products of biogas generators already being practiced although those technological options are still new for Nepal. Also biogas- diesel dual mode engine does not require significant additional investment. A locally prepared arrangement for moisture traps and sulphide extractor is sufficient for this technology.

The gas turbine is an internal combustion engine that operates with rotational rather than reciprocating motion. Turbines can be fueled by natural gas or biogas and are used in a broad scope of applications, including electric power generation, gas pipeline compressors, and various industrial applications requiring shaft power. While many newer turbines are large utility units, manufacturers are producing smaller and more efficient units that are well-suited to distributed generation applications. Turbines range in size from 30 kW (micro turbines) to 250 MW (large industrial units). Jenbacher is the world leader company for biogas turbines included in the annex.

In biogas which contains methane as the fuel element, the self ignition temperature is relatively high and much higher compression ratios can be used, which leads to improved efficiency. The alteration of a diesel engine into an equivalent spark ignition engine requires the following modifications/ retrofitting;
• Remove the fuel injection system (fuel pump and the injector) • Incorporation of a suitable spark plug in place of the injector by appropriate alteration in
the injector hole. • Modification in the engine intake system incorporating appropriate system for air-fuel
mixing and control i.e. a gas carburetor system. • Retrofitting with cam shaft/ crank shaft a particularly designed ignition system. • Modification in the combustion chamber/ compression ratio etc.
3.4.1 Electricity Generation Components Biogas engine with alternator An engine-generator is the combination of an electrical generator and an engine (prime mover) mounted together to form a single piece of self-contained equipment. The engines used are usually piston engines, but gas turbines can also be used. And there are even hybrid diesel-gas units, called dual-fuel units. The Alternator is high efficient, self-excited, self-regulated and suitable for uninterrupted operation. They also provide the electrical control panel with all type of indication, automatic changeover and monitoring/controlling as optional. Many different versions of engine-generators are available in the market ranging from very small portable sets to large sizes of capacity ranges from 2kW to 2000kW. The primary advantage of engine-generators is the ability to independently supply electricity, allowing the units to serve as backup power solutions. Especially design engine to use biogas and producer gas, water cooled/air cooled, spark ignition, 1500 RPM, continuous rating, heavy duty and most important operation without battery for remote place. A specially designed of automatic air and fuel control and system to take care of efficient, smooth working of engine with variable load is essential.
3.5 Biogas Purification and other spare parts Biogas purification can be anticipated to enrich the methane content in the biogas. The use of pressurized water scrubber, which might be appropriate from both technical and economic point of view in Nepal at commercial scale. Moreover, other several processes like pressure swing absorber, membrane separation, activated carbon sieve method, cryogenic etc are available in the market. Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is a technique which consists of four adsorber vessels, a compressor and an H2S removal step. The four adsorber vessels contain adsorbent material (carbon molecular sieve) which adsorbs N2, O2, H2O, CO2 and H2S. The H2S is adsorbed irreversible by the adsorbent material and would thus poison the material. Therefore, an additional H2S removal step to be included.
Membrane separation Membrane separation processes operate without heating and therefore use less energy than conventional thermal separation processes such as distillation, sublimation or crystallization. The separation process is purely physical.
Cryogenic Cryogenic processing is not a substitute for heat treatment, but rather an extension of the heating - quenching - tempering cycle. Normally, when an item is quenched, the final temperature is ambient. The only reason for this is that most heat treaters do not have cooling equipment. This technique seems more difficult and expensive too. Among the various purification processes, the water scrubber technology seems more appropriate.
3.5.1 Water scrubber technology Two types of water absorption processes are commonly used for upgrading of gas from anaerobic digestion, single pass absorption and regenerative absorption. Water can also be recycled and a stripper column has to be integrated in the regenerative absorption process whereas the water in the single pass process is used only once. These appliances also can be made available in the market of Nepal via supply chain market of both China and India.

3.5.2 Compression and Storage A common gas compressor posses fire hazards, since auto-ignition temperature of biogas is 537°C. So leakage and extreme temperature rise will be lethal. A hermetic reciprocating compressor can be used in a refrigeration system with a hydrocarbon refrigerant. It requires cooling system, otherwise careful operation must be done so as not to raise the temperature above safe limits. The pressure and volume of the gas at various points of compression can be distinguished using a pressure gauge and flow-meter respectively. The consequence of pressure is two-fold; it can alter the composition as well as the total output of biogas. CO2 is soluble in water willingly while methane is not. At high pressure, the solubility of CO2 increases proportionally much more than that of methane, with the upshot that the gas will contain a higher percentage of methane. A separate tank can be used with a floating gas holder for the storage of the digestate and also storage of the raw biogas. Floating gas holders can be made of steel, fiberglass, or flexible fabric materials. The market analysis shows that, the vehicle tubes, plastic bags etc as gas storage could be used.
3.5.3 CO2 Scrubbing Unit Biogas consists of different gases like Methane, carbon dioxide, and some other trace gases like hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen, nitrogen, water vapor and others. From those gases, only methane is required for cooking and lighting purposes but the others are harmful for the equipments which the biogas burnt in, transported through and decrease the calorific value of the biogas. So that, unwanted gases should be removed. The purpose of CO2 scrubbing unit is to remove the unwanted CO2 from raw biogas dissolving with water.

3.6 Identification of appropriate biogas electrification generator for Nepal Biogas generators can be easily brought to Nepal from markets of India and China. Most of generators originate from China while few generators are from India as well. According to result of the market analysis, at present the number of biogas generators used in Nepal is almost nil in comparison with quantity of biogas plants already installed. Study team suggested that; Biogas generator must select based on two main factors: capacity and electricity consumption demand. According to factual survey, generators are to be selected by market availability. Market survey shows that, even though biogas generators are available sold in the market but the information and technical parameters are not sufficiently provided by the suppliers. Study team has made several contacts with various suppliers for their product details along with technical specifications. Normally, the suppliers only provide quotation. The information in the quotation is very simple which mentions about power and price of generator. Other information such as fuel consumption, lifetime, catalogue etc was lacking. There is a lack of neither manual nor instruction brochure to direct users/buyers to select suitable generator, installation, operation as well as maintenance. There are various options for selecting biogas generators. After establishing the supply chain system

Based on email and phone calls received from the various suppliers from China and India; some suppliers have shown their high interest to supply biogas generators in Nepal. For example, Saicharan Urja India Pvt Ltd, India has given high inquisitiveness to supply biogas generator, biogas flow meter, pressure gauge for gas metering system, and biogas desulphurizer units in Nepal. The various e-mail received and its passion to perform this task is relatively high than other suppliers. Another potential suppliers are Green Power Solutions, Perfect Bio-waste and Power Management P. Ltd and Green Power International Pvt. Ltd, India.
In the case of China, Alibaba Group has several suppliers in China and other countries as well. It is famous for biogas generator products and other accessories. Among the supplier companies; these three companies namely Zhengzhou Yudong New Energy Co.Ltd, Weifang Heng An Imp and Exp Co.Ltd of China are the most interested suppliers of biogas generators. Similarly, for supply of the biogas desulphurizer, one of the potential suppliers is Wuhan Acme Agro-Tech Co., Ltd, China. Another capable supplier for supply biogas desulfurizer is Shenzhen Puxin Technology Co.Ltd, China.
As reply in the e-mail and phone calls, the biogas generator manufacturer companies (multinational companies/large companies) said that, if Nepal requires biogas generator sets above 50/60 pieces per year, they are ready for opening biogas generator suppliers company in Nepal.
The various appliances is required for biogas electrification. This market study aimed to identify the major suppliers of the following appliances in Nepal and abroad as well.
1) Engine-generator sets: Biogas generators sets suppliers (registered) in Nepal are not available but in China and India there were found too many suppliers. A list of suppliers in China, India and Bangladesh has been prepared in Annex-1.
2) Flow meter: Few suppliers are already working in Nepal. Apart from Nepal; there are many suppliers in China and India as well. The list of supplier is given in Annex-2.

4 Supply Chain Mechanism, Cost for Biogas Generators, Possible Suppliers in Nepal
4.1 Supply Chain Mechanism The supply chain system for biogas generators in Nepal is not established. However, study team has visited several electrical shops in Kathmandu to identify the marketing channel of other generators sets such as petrol engine, diesel engine etc. Among the dealers; few were ready to sell biogas generator sets in the market, if there is high demand (large number). The retailers of general generator sets were found unknown about biogas electrification. As they said; there is good availability of technical persons for repair and maintenance of any electrical equipments in the local market. The flow meter, pressure meter, desulfurizer unit etc are already being sold in the market as per demand for various purposes.
A query related to demand and supply chain; local dealers stated that they must first submit the Letter of Intent as per their local demand then receives quotation. Based on demand and quotation; local dealers are sending budget to their respective companies in China, India or others. Nepalese local dealer is responsible to pay tax, customs and duties while buying generator sets and other required appliances. In similar way, suppliers from China, India or other countries provide warranty/guarantee of such systems. If there is major damage then that supplier gives replace of that system. As informed; some manufacturers/suppliers (multinational companies) have their local dealers in Kathmandu and also providing technical supports to other local dealers time to time. Local retailers are responsible for selling of generator sets which bought from dealers at local market. In the case of normal generator set supply chain; there is already established national dealers (like Honda, Yamaha etc) one side whereas other side local dealers are importing those sets from international suppliers as well. Consumer can bought normal generator sets in different options like, national dealers, local dealers and local retailer/shops. The spare parts of normal generator sets are available in the market. Furthermore, the repair and maintenance facilities after sales services also available in local market. In similar way, biogas electrification related workshop/dealers could be established in Nepal. Implementation is first then it create ultimately repair and maintenance centers in the market. The HS CODE (Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System) of tariff nomenclature is an internationally standardized system of names and numbers for classifying traded products developed and maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO) (formerly the Customs Cooperation Council), an independent intergovernmental organization with over 170 member countries based in Brussels, Belgium. This market study was also focused to identify the HS Code of each biogas generator set but only few suppliers provided their such codes. Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) is responsible to regulate HS code of all exporting goods. It is mainly focused on agro-products and herb products. The Integrated Customs Tariff was created to facilitate use of the Harmonized System and it is simply a guideline and does not constitute any legal requirement. Users are advised to consult the legal text for accuracy and legal judgment. Detail process is attached in Annex part. The demand creation in large number will help ultimately to establish market chain of manufacturer to consumers. In addition to the direct subsidy on the biogas system, Nepal government has granted some other financial incentives for biogas development and promotion whole over the country. The value added tax (VAT) is exempted on imported biogas appliances. Similarly, there is provision of only 1 percent import duty and 1.5 percent local development tax in the import of biogas appliances. Such kind provision should be developed for biogas generator sets as well.

The transportation cost highly depends upon the quantity of imported products, location, time etc. In case of high number of demand, international suppliers are fully responsible for transportation cost and other service delivery as well.

4.2 Cost Price of Biogas Generator Sets Depending on origin and technical characteristics of each generator, price is different and decided by manufacturers/suppliers. A supplier provided different quotation of same capacity generator. It is impossible to say a specific price of generator. For example; cost price of 1kW capacity biogas generator set in China ranges from 98-1500 dollars but in India its cost 1900 dollar. Similarly, cost price of 3kW capacity biogas generator set in China ranges from 150 -1500 dollars but in India its cost 2500 dollar. This figures indicate that there are several products in the market of China and India with different price of generator sets having different capacities. After establishing demand supply system; a buyer can bought the biogas generator sets as suited for own purpose.

4.3 Factors affecting for biogas electrification Biogas electrification projects has not only benefit of power generation but its environmental value is also high due to waste management in large commercial farms, municipal waste etc. Economically, biogas electrification project must compete with electricity generation from national grid or petrol, diesel based electrification. With reference to the deficit in demand and supply of grid electricity at the present time and the market price of diesel and petrol; biogas electrification projects might be more viable options to fulfill energy demand in commercial farms in Nepal.

4.4 Freight Forwarders for Biogas Electrification It is assumed that the role of freight forwarders to establish linkage between different stakeholders in the market is very crucial. Biogas generator supply chain is not established yet, thus study team has worked to identify the potential freight forwarders in Nepal. Apart from few personnel working to the sector, others were not familiar with the technology. 4.5 Potential Suppliers for Biogas Generator Sets A field visit was conducted in Kathmandu to identify the potential suppliers of biogas generator sets and other accessories in future. 5 Testing/Commissioning Procedures 5.1 General criterias for testing/commissioning A number of biogas electrification projects of different capacities and applications should be taken up for refining the technical know-how, developing technical experts/technicians and necessary infrastructure, establishing a proper arrangement of operation & maintenance and large scale dissemination. The implementing organizations must make sure that sufficient feed materials for proposed biogas plants size are available on sustainable basis and the beneficiary organization gives an undertaking that the plant would be maintained and operated for a minimum period of ten years. Based on provided information, an authorized agency will be responsible for testing and commissioning of thus established project. Testing and commissioning could be initiated after developing the required specifications and standards, discussions/deliberations on the performance of systems, setting up operation and maintenance mechanism, training of required human resources, capacity building, business meets for the prospective industries, etc. with the ultimate objective of promotion of biogas electrification. 5.2 Certification/testing verification of appliances/equipments From this market study; it is identified that biogas generators also manufactured under ISO Standards however the testing the components of biogas are being considered to be established. The Renewable Energy Test Station (RETS) is an autonomous body governed by “Renewable Energy Test Station Rules 2063” framed under clause 31 of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Act 2048. It seems necessary to undertake the testing verification and certification of all appliances by RETS for the quality development and sustainable utility of biogas electrification products. An appropriate testing equipment to be identified to undertake quality testing of the various parameters. At least the “Product Introduction Test (PIT)” to be carried out to introduce biogas electrification system and its components for the first time in the market. Furthermore; AEPC/NRREP should initiate testing protocol for biogas electrification system.
5.3 Basic Requirements for the Sustainability of Biogas Electrification Project Operation of biogas plant should strictly follows instruction so as to ensure suitable dilution ratio of dung and water; gas pipe line must be gas-tight and no gas leakage. The biogas can effectively be utilized for electrification system after dewatering and cleaning of the gas. In addition, the slurry produced in the process provides valuable organic fertilizer for farming and sustaining the soil fertility. In this context, the frequent monitoring of the following components by technical team to be required.

This type profile helps for regular monitoring of the project as per need. A periodic plan to monitor the all systems from authorized agencies should be developed which ultimately will help for the sustainability of the established projects.
5.4 Warranty/guarantee plan Based on market survey, it can be said that there is provision of warranty for at least one year of all biogas electrification appliances in most cases. Thus, the implementing agency should imply the provision of warranty is mandatory for installer or suppliers. Also the post installation services are to be required for sustaining the technology in future. At least 1-2 years of warranty/guarantee with repair and maintenance facilities should be encouraged for the successful implementation of biogas electrification projects in Nepal. Moreover, the following considerations are required;

6 Conclusion and Recommendations 6.1 Conclusion Biogas generator has been rather widely used in the world. In international market, biogas generators are various type, kind of engine, capacity and technical characteristics. However, utilization of biogas generators in Nepal is still at its beginning. Quantity of generators that has already been installed into biogas systems is negligible in comparison to success of biogas installation in Nepal.
This study has focused to identify the possible biogas generators that are available in the market of China, India and Bangladesh. Moreover, a list of suppliers of biogas electrification appliances from China and India has been prepared.
6.2 Recommendations • The biogas electrification demonstration projects should be developed. To date, biogas
generator are not applied sufficiently in Nepal. Thus, a large number of biogas users, electric suppliers/dealers/retailers, private companies are not able to access information about the technology. Such established demonstration projects could play vital role to attract private sector in sector.
• It is possible to use hybrid generators like biogas/petroleum generator and/or biogas/diesel generator in order to make use of generators that already available in the market. The utilization of hybrid generator helps users to take initiative in electricity production as well as be active in case biogas plant has to stop due to any reason like maintenance or lack of feeding material (unavailability of biogas).
• Demand creation of biogas electrification projects in commercial approach is another challenge however it is equally important for attracting the market in this sector. AEPC should provide facilitating role through creating the investment friendly environment to attract the private sector for their business purpose.
• AEPC should made policy recommendation to the government for TAX/VAT exemption of biogas generators and their accessories which ultimately lower the cost of technology. Such type provision would help for the promotion and implementation of biogas electrification projects in the country.
• Quality of the whole system including their certification, guarantee, regular follow up monitoring, after sales services etc should be strictly followed by all concerned agencies before, during and after implementation of the projects.
