Purpose of the study

• To propose a package development process that is generic based on extensive literature review and five case studies

• ‘Generic’ in the context that the process will facilitate the development of new and innovative package systems and designs needed in product manufacturing

• ‘Generic’ can also mean the establishment of common terminologies and process description that can apply to package manufacturers regardless of raw materials used or outcome of the final package

Page 3: On a proposal for a generic package development.pptx

Main message in the article

• There was a need to update and consolidate information from theoretical and practical cases in the package development process

• Unlike the product development process which can be considered generic, package development process differs from one company to another

• The proposed package development process takes globalization into account, thereby developing a product-package system (PPS) in the most efficient and effective way

Critical review - Cons

• Not proven to be optimal• Lacks theoretical basis• “Best Pratices” in industry doesn’t mean optimal

• Possible problems• For example: Integration phase of the system may not be easy:

Each individual part may be very good, but not when combined

Page 15: On a proposal for a generic package development.pptx

Critical review - Pros• Generic/Standard

• Applicable in most contexts• Easy to understand, throughout the development chain

• Modular• Work can be segmented and distributed:

• In teams within the same project/group/company• Through external companies (Outsource)

• Clearly-defined:• Step-by-step guide that leads to “Best Practice” development

standards on the industry

Applicability in lubricating oil

• Overall packaging development will be overseen by CRC Industries

• Three specialized sub-system package manufacturers (aerosol can, cardboard box, pallet) will be involved in the development processes

Exam questionIn globalised sourcing, certain product-package development process is needed. Identify and explain the process (3 points). What are the benefits of this process (2 points)?

Generic package development process which integrates different actors of packaging development (product and package manufacturers). There are specified terms and steps to be followed. After development of overall package system, the complete subsystem package development will be done by different manufacturers. The package system will be integrated in the end and being used in the product manufacturing site. (or draw the overall generic package development process)Similar terms and steps for different actors (avoid confusion, standardised documentations), the steps can be used for

globalised production environment
