  • OMM for the Medical Specialties

    2021 Virtual Convocation Program Brochure

    March 17-21, 2021

Barbara Ann Zajdel, DO, FAAO, program chair

  • Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) was not intended to be relegated only to a specialty niche, but practiced by all physicians who are willing to learn and apply these principles. Every physician can easily incorporate the philosophy and principles of osteopathic medicine into patient care.

This Convocation will showcase physicians from various medical specialties and demonstrate their approach to utilizing osteopathic manipulative medicine and treatment in patient care.

Dermatology, neurology, cardiology, psychiatry, radiology, sports medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology are just a few of the specialties that will be represented in this year’s presentations and workshops. Each physician will discuss how they incorporate the philosophy of OMM into their practice. Workshops will be focused on OMT techniques they incorporate into their busy practices.

    AAO 2021 Virtual Convocation

Barbara Ann Zajdel, DO, FAAO2021 Convocation program chair

Who May Attend Convocation?AAO’s primary educational objective is to provide programs that enhance the philosophical foundation, palpatory diagnostic skills and manipulative techniques of AAO members, nonmember DOs, individuals who are licensed for the unlimited scope of practice of medicine, and those in programs leading to such licensure.

Although other health care professionals are welcome to learn about osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) at AAO programs, attending the AAO’s Convocation or its pre-Convocation courses is not a substitute for graduating from osteopathic medical school and completing graduate medical education. Simply participating in continuing medical education programs in manual techniques does not provide the necessary training and skills to practice OMM.

Support Tomorrow’s Osteopathic PhysiciansContribute to the Nicholas S. Nicholas Fund and subsidize student registration fees. You can donate online, or you can use the mail-in registration form on page 11 of this brochure.

    OMM for the Medical Specialties

AAO 2021 Convocation will be fully virtual. Some events will be live and some will be pre-recorded. Both formats will provide you with an opportunity to ask questions within the platform. We will be offering as many of the previously scheduled sessions as pos-sible in one combined program based on Convocations of the past, within the limits of our virtual platform. All attendees, including students, will register for this combined program using a single registration link, to simplify virtual event operations.

Because the 2021 Convocation was orginally scheduled to be in the Central region, the schedule is operating on Central Daylight Time zone. All times listed in the schedule reflect CDT time. Please make note of this and plan your individual schedule accordingly.

LBORC Research Forum: Research Proposal and Mentorship Grand RoundsOn Thursday, March 18, the Louisa Burns Osteopathic Research Committee (LBORC) will virtually host its annual research forum, Research Proposal and Mentorship (RPM) Grand Rounds, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. CDT. The purpose of this program is to assist physicians and osteopathic medical students in assessing research proposals and to facilitate the outcome of osteopathic research.

The format for this evening is similar to the TV show “Shark Tank” where aspiring investigators at any stage of their careers present their research proposals to the audience and a panel of experienced researchers. The audience directly engages both the investigators and the panelists to help audience members gain numerous pearls to refine their own research questions and identify ways to improve osteopathic research projects. Presenters will receive advice on their projects to increase the rigor of their study, and they have the opportunity for one of the experts to help mentor them during their study. Previous RPM Grand Rounds presenters will provide status updates on their projects at the beginning of this event.

Researchers interested in presenting proposals should download and submit an application no later than Jan. 31, 2021, to [email protected]. Proposals should clearly define the clinical relevance, research question, and testable hypothesis. They should include an overview of the study design, cohort to be studied, recruitment strategy, methodology, and projected timeline and budget. Learn more at academyofosteopathy.org/lborc-research-forum.

Please sign up for the forum when you register online for Convocation. Alternatively, you can register for Convocation and sign up for the research forum using the registration form included in this brochure on page 11.

You are encouraged to join the members of the LBORC for a very interactive, entertaining session to experience the process of research project development.

  • Attention Residents: Look for these RAAO events at the 2021 Convocation! The 2021 Resident Track consists of a full day of resident-focused activities at Convocation on Friday, March 19:

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. • Morning lectures developed spe-cifically for residents based on feedback from previ-ous surveys. Topics include getting started in private practice after residency, COVID and lymphatics, a panel discussion, and more. Speakers are Albert J. Kozar, DO, FAOASM, R-MSK; Francis Yoo, DO; Hugh M. Ettlinger, DO, FAAO, FCA; and Frank Goodman, DO, MS.

1:30 to 3 p.m. • Join us for the RAAO Annual Business Meeting, where you will have the opportunity to elect your new Executive Council and vote on other impor-tant RAAO matters.

4 to 7 p.m. • Don’t miss the ONMM Residency Infor-mation Session and Job Fair. This is an opportunity for those looking for opportunities to further their educa-tion and/or careers in that special field of osteopathy known as Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (NMM/OMM). This event will

include opportunities for all levels who are seeking a position in the field of NMM/OMM at any stage in their careers after medical school. Learn about: postgraduate openings in ONMM; jobs at medical schools, hospitals, clinics and private practices looking for NMM/OMM spe-cialists; and resources for our AAO and RAAO members, including the benefits of membership in the only NMM/OMM specialty college in the United States. Be sure to watch for more information as we get closer to the date of this unprecedented event!

Post-Convocation Course Residency Program Directors’ WorkshopOn Sunday, March 21, 2021, from 2 to 8 p.m. CDT, members of the Postdoctoral Training Committee will facilitate the residency program directors’ workshop. The workshop is designed to address key concepts to assist residency program directors and administrators in their roles as educators. The workshop is open to anyone with an interest in osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine (ONMM) residencies, not just ONMM residency program directors. We also encourage the attendance of program coordinators.

Intended topics at the 2021 program directors’ workshop are still in process. Check the event registration page online for updated information or contact Amber Rausch as we get closer to the date. Anticipated likely topics will include updates from ACGME, preparing for the practical portion of the OMM board exam, and surviving residency programs in an intra and post COVID world.

All ONMM residency programs approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) must send their program directors or designated physician faculty to this annual workshop. • Judges Needed: A. Hollis Wolf Case Presentation CompetitionThe Student American Academy of Osteopathy’s annual A. Hollis Wolf Case Presentation Competition will take place Saturday, March 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. CDT.

During the competition, students chosen from each SAAO chapter will have five minutes to present their cases. Students will demonstrate their understanding and application of osteopathic principles and treatment, their knowledge of pathophysiology and clinical aspects of their cases, and the impact of osteopathic care. Presenters will be judged on their presentation style, skill and slide design in addition to the students’ involvement in decision-making and delivering treatment.

The SAAO needs physicians to volunteer to judge the competition. Judges earn Category 1-A CME for participating. Indicate your willingness to volunteer when you register for Convocation online or using the form on Page 9. If selected, you will be contacted by the SAAO Executive Council to confirm your appointment to the judging panel.

Judges’ comments, but not scores, will be shared with presenters.

For more information, please contact SAAO vice chair Emily Willmann, OMS III, at [email protected].

SAAO Silent Auction is Going VirtualIn 2016, the Student American Academy of Osteopathy began offering a fully silent auction. With the decision to make the 2021 Convocation a completely virtual experience, the SAAO will be utilizing an online auction system for this fundraiser.

Watch for further information from the SAAO about how to view the auction items and make your online bids!

For information on donating items to the auction, please contact Casey Koth, OMS III, the SAAO Executive Council’s secretary-treasurer, at [email protected]. Auction offerings often include medical devices, books, artwork and tasty treats.
