Open Access (OA) is the practice of providing unrestricted access
via the Internet to peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles. OA is also
increasingly being provided to theses, scholarly monographs and
book chapters
Society as a whole benefits from an augmented and expedites
research cycle in which research can advance more effectively
because researchers have immediate access to all the findings they
need.
Increasingly, university and research libraries are being overwhelmed
with information that has been created in digital format and
transmitted, accessed via computers. As the number of collections
in digital formats exaggerates exponentially, more libraries and
information providers are facing a number of unique challenges
presented by this relatively new medium.
All works published by OMICS Publishing Group are under the terms
of the Creative Commons Attribution License. This permits anyone to
copy, allocate, transmit and adapt the work, provided the original work
and source is appropriately cited.
The costs of producing open access literature are considered far
lower than the costs of toll-access model and many associations, libraries, universities, foundations and individuals today support this
mission to endorse open access as a common practice with new and
improved financing models.
Revenue
The main reason for researchers not publishing in open access
journals, although most of them became aware of that their research
field benefits from OA is lack of funding for the article processing
charge (APC).
A revenue model for Open Access (university providing funds for the
articles written by its faculty) should ideally be created.
Many institutions (such as CERN) and universities (such as MIT,
Harvard, Simon Fraser University, Stellenbosch University, Trinity
College) adopt different COPE (Compact for OA publishing equitieshttp://www.oacompact.org/compact/) policies that then encourage
their researchers to provide open access to their work, green or gold,
no later than a year after publication, or that incremented funding may
be obtained by researchers to pay open access fees.
