FROM THE DIRECTOR . . .We who work in art museums are often so focused on producing our next exhibitions and programs (and finding the funding needed to produce them) that we fail to observe the cumulative effects our institutions have on the communities we serve.

Museums are transformative. They change communities by celebrating the creativity of both the individual and the community itself. Exhibitions also help people become comfortable seeing things through another’s eyes - a remarkable skill that builds tolerant and peaceful neighborhoods that truly value diversity.

In a very short period OMA has led a wave of change that has transformed Oceanside and Coastal North County into a vibrant center of Southern California culture. Your gift can sustain our progress during these challenging times. Please use the attached envelope to make a generous contribution to the 2009 Annual Campaign. Now, more than ever, we need your help.

Skip PahlExecutive Director

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the Parker Gallery, an exhibition space located on the 2nd floor of the museum which highlights the richness of the contemporary art scene. By changing exhibitions every other month, viewers will be exposed to a range of local talents working in a variety of media. Each exhibition will also feature a Meet the Artist event, helping to bring artists and their

communities together. We hope you can join us!

Commesso: Made in America “Gemstone Fine Art” March 2 – May 1, 2009 Meet the artist Dennis Paul Batt, Saturday, April 25, 2 p.m.The intricate pictures featured in this exhibition were created from a variety of hard and semi-precious stones chosen for their unique pictorial possibilities. Commesso involves the fitting of stones side by side to create a design.

Cell Memory by Valentyna Roenko Simpson May 4 – July 2, 2009 Meet the artist, Saturday, June 20, 2 p.m.Roenko’s fiber portraits address the concept of cell memory and the potential DNA holds for unlocking the secrets of human ancestry.

CULINARY CINEMA SERIES “LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE”March 21

The award winning film, “Like Water for Chocolate” will be screened with delicious Mexican cuisine served in the museum for the next Culinary Cinema Series. This unique program pairs food themed films with cui-sine inspired by the film. The popular novel “Like Water for Chocolate” by Mexican au-thor Laura Esquivel, was made into a film in 1993 and earned 11 Ariel awards from the

Mexican Academy of Motion Pictures, including the Ariel Award for Best Picture. The romantic drama set in Mexico at the turn of the 20th century is cen-tered on two lovers, Tita and Pedro who are unable to marry because of Tita’s family obligation to take care of her mother. As the story un-folds Tita discovers that her mouth-watering dishes have the magical ef-fect of transferring her emotions of despair and desire into her cooking.

Join us at the museum on Saturday, March 21st at 6:00 p.m. for this touch-ing love story and a gourmet Mexican dinner prepared by chef Juan Manuel Padilla of Frida’s Restaurant in Chula Vista. Dinner includes a variety of spe-cialty regional hors d’oeuvres, chef Juan’s famous Chiles en Nogada (chil-ies in walnut sauce), and a delicious Mexican dessert bar with tea and coffee. Cinema Society of San Diego director, Andrew Friedenberg will introduce the film with background on the actors and director. Reservations are re-quired in advance and limited to 100 guests. Cost is $60 for OMA members, $75 for non-members. Call the museum at 760.435.3721 for reservations.

JOHN STEIGER1920-2008

The museum has lost a dear friend, neighbor and supporter dedicated to Oceanside’s prog-ress and civic programs. As a leader in the community, John Steiger was a former City Coun-cil member, former president of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, founder of the Oceanside Boys and Girls Club and the Oceanside Yacht Club. He was president of the Ocean-side Cultural Arts Foundation which founded the Oceanside Museum of Art and he was our neighbor across the street in the Steiger Building where he maintained his real estate busi-ness. John was an ardent sup-porter of the museum with his wife Mary and together they were presented with the mu-seum’s Medal of Distinction at the 2007 Museum Ball for their significant contribution to the success of museum. A great storyteller and jokester, John was a charming gentle-man and we will miss him.

FREE FAMILY ART DAYMay 3Design clothing from recyclables, build sculptures out of recycled objects and make scented watercolor paintings at “Free Family Art Day,” Sunday May 3rd, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Bring the whole family to this fun-filled event where children are encouraged to view the artwork featured in the exhibitions. On view, Lowbrow Art: Nine San Diego Pop Surrealists and Institutional Wellbeing: An Olfactory Plan for Oceans-ide Museum of Art. Participate in hands-on art activities that reflect concepts and themes from the exhibits. “Free Family Art Day” is a program that provides the com-munity with educational art experiences and includes all necessary materials. In-formational docent tours geared specifically for kids are at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Also on May 3rd, artist Peggy Ann Jones presents Vortex Plastique, a collaboration with Mira Costa College and OMA sponsored by the Oceanside Arts Commission. Jones and sculptor Jennifer Miller, brought friends and students together to cre-ate sculptures of and about plastic in our lives and our environment. The sculp-tures on view include a carpet constructed of approximately 3420 braided plastic shopping bags over 13 feet in diameter and five, life-sized, figurative sculptures constructed of discarded consumer plastics representing themes of environmental concerns. Inspiration for the carpet came from research about plastic in the ocean.

The title, Vortex Plastique, makes reference to the North West Pacific Gyre, an area of the ocean where currents entrap discarded plastic. At “Free Family Art Day” chil-dren and adults can learn the art of braiding plastic shopping bags for the construc-tion of a carpet and they can design a piece of wearable recyclables, like a jacket or dress out of plastic. Jones will talk about Vortex Plastique from 2:00 – 2:30 p.m.
