The Blueberry Muffins

John woke up to the sun shining through the window of his family’s beautiful farm. He sat up in bed and smiled as he could feel the warmth on his face. His mother was busy and running around the house.

He walked downstairs and said, “Mother, I’d like to eat a blueberry muffin for breakfast.”

“Well, I’m quite busy this morning and will need your help,” she said. “Bobby was planning on coming over this morning too. Maybe he can help you. In fact, here he is now. Hi Bobby!”

“Hi Mrs. Patton,” responded Bobby, bowing his head in respect. “OK, what do we do?” asked John.

“First we need flour. Go to our backyard and gather and cut as much wheat as you can both possibly hold in your arms from the field. Then you can take it to the miller and they will give you flour,” explained his mother.

John and Bobby ran out to their backyard. The golden wheat on their farm swayed in the wind. “This is where flour comes from?” asked Bobby. They went on to collect four large loads of wheat and took it over to the mill down the street. “Can you grind this wheat for me? We want to make a big blueberry muffin for breakfast,” John asked the miller.

They put the wheat out on the ground and they all beat it with a large stick to separate the straw and chaff from the grain. After they were done, they had a small pile of grain.John and Bobby watched as a millstone ground the grain and made it into flour. They ran home excitedly with the flour and said, “Let’s make muffins!!”

John’s mother said, “Hold on, boys, that’s not all. We need milk to put in the muffinsGo out to Judy and get some milk.”

John and Bobby ran out to their backyard. “Hi Judy!” exclaimed John.“Moooo,” said Judy. “We need some milk for a muffin we want to make for breakfast. Can you give us some?”

Judy moved closer to John and Bobby. John showed Bobby how to put gloves on and then pull down on the udders to make the milk spout out into the pail. “Thank you for your milk, Judy!”“Moooo,” said Judy and walked back to her resting bed of hay. “Here’s the milk, Mom! Now can we make muffins?”“Not yet. Now, we need to take some of the milk and make butter and yogurt. Here help me churn the milk with this butter churner, Bobby. John, can you get the yogurt culture out of the refrigerator and add it to some warmed milk? We need yogurt to make the muffin stick together.”

“Now that the yogurt is sitting, who wants to pick blueberries?” she asked.“We do!!” yelled John and Bobby.

They went out to their bushes in their backyard. “Don’t eat too many or you won’t have room for your muffin!” yelled John’s mother. They barely heard her since they were already running far back behind the vineyard to the blueberry bushes. They shortly returned with two pails of plump blueberries. They were so full and round that they looked like they could pop at any time.

“And now are we ready to make our muffin?” pleaded John.“Yes”, replied his mother with a smile. “Why don’t you both get a wooden spoon and we will mix the ingredients.”

“Flour,” said John as he measured two cupfuls. “Milk,” said Bobby.“Yogurt,” said John.“Butter,” said Bobby as he mixed it in.“And a little vanilla, salt, sugar, and baking powder to help them rise!” added his mother.

“And now for the fun part: Who wants to add in the blueberries?”

Both boys grabbed handfuls and threw them into the mixing bowl.

“Stir them in really well and now let’s finally spoon the dough into these cupcake holders,” said John’s mother. “Great! Now we have to wait until we can smell them through the whole house and then we know the oven has cooked them well enough!”

“How long do we need to wait,” asked Bobby? “Go out and play for 20 minutes.”

Finally, the boys returned because the wafts of warm blueberries and cooked dough filled the house so much that they drifted out the window and into the front yard where they were playing.

“There,” said John’s mother. “Five large muffins. We can save the other two for tomorrow’s breakfast.” “Ummm,” said Bobby, “they smell wonderful! My mommy doesn’t have a farm and we get the packaged kind of muffins from the grocery store. They aren’t very tasty but these muffins we made smell so good I want to eat them all!”

“Making food from scratch using the natural ingredients that the earth provides for us makes the best meals of all,” responded John’s mother. “They are the healthiest for our bodies too because our bodies were created from the same place the earth came from. Do either of you know where we came from?” asked John’s Mom.

John and Bobby both said in unison, “From God!” “You always tell us that, Mom,” said John.

“Yes,” said his mother, “so let us think about where we came from and our food came from as we taste these lovely gifts from God.”
