    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    Operations Management (OM) deals with the management of systems that provide goods

    and services to customers. This function exists in all industries, including manufacturing,

    retail distribution, and government services. The goal of OM is to provide value to the

    customer via the pursuit of efficiency and effectiveness. In a broader sense, OM is also a set

    of concepts and tools that can be useful in the management of the operations of any

    organization. Since operations are at the core of any business, OM is an essential area ofmanagement study.

    This course is designed to introduce students to concepts and techniques related to the

    design, planning, control, and improvement of manufacturing and service operations. The

    course begins with a holistic view of operations, where the coordination of product

    development, process management, and supply chain management will be introduced. As

    the course progresses, various aspects of each of these three tiers of operations will be

    investigated in detail. The topics will cover the areas of process analysis, materials

    management, production scheduling, quality improvement, and product design.

    COURSE OBJECTIVE:

    Upon completion of this course, students should be able to

    Develop an understanding of the strategic importance of manufacturing/servicesupply chains and how operations can provide a competitive advantage in the

    marketplace

    Recognize the relationship between manufacturing and related service providersand other business functions, such as human resources, purchasing, marketing,

    finance, etc.

    Emphasize the importance of change, facilitation of learning, cross-functionalteamwork, knowledge capture, and analysis in manufacturing organizations

    Develop knowledge of the issues related to designing and managing manufacturingoperations so that prosperity in todays job market is achieved

    APPROACH:

    Lectures, current issues, reading, class participation, videos, problem, case analysis, exams

    and project/case write up will be utilized. There will be discussion of various models and

    techniques but emphasis on problem formulation and managerial implication.

    CASE WRITE-UP:

    One 1/2 page typed case write up will be required. This is an individual case write up and

    focused question will be provided.
