Course Overview Today’s healthcare environment challenges organizations to balance cost containment with quality care. In order to survive and thrive in this atmosphere, endoscopy nurses and clinicians must combine clinical expertise with business skills.

This educational course is designed for those who want to more effectively manage their resources, and it presents an overview of topics affecting the GI nurse. Sessions provide informational updates for a wide array of clinical topics.

Purpose StatementThis formal educational activity has been developed in response to managers, nurses and technicians who have expressed a need to update their clinical knowledge while main-taining quality patient care. Reprocessing UpdateEmphasizes critical steps related to reprocessing and infection control, and how proper reprocessing may reduce scope repairs.

EUS*, EBUS* & ERCP* Clinical Review and Update2-Day Program

Course OverviewEUS/EBUS has emerged as an important new imaging modality. This program is designed to provide nurses and techni-cians with a thorough update on the recent advances in endosonographic technology and equipment. A step-by-step guide to preparing and performing these procedures will be reviewed. This course will allow the nurse/technician to discuss the most recent advances in EUS/EBUS and ERCP technology, describe the procedure and its role in gastroenterol-ogy, and recognize the applications of the equipment and accessories.

ERCP is a technically challenging therapeutic procedure. The second day of this course will focus on the relevant pancreatic and biliary anatomy and physiology, the devices used during the procedure, and the teamwork necessary for successful performance of ERCP. Hands-on practice will complement didactic instruction.

Learning Objectives• Identify the role of nurses and

associates involved with EUS/EBUS and ERCP procedures.

• Review the gastrointestinal anatomy and physiology related to EUS/EBUS and ERCP.

• Discuss the physics of ultrasound as it relates to GI echoendoscopes.

• Demonstrate proper procedure room and scope setup for the EUS/EBUS system and ERCP procedures.

• Examine the proper use of FNA needles.

• Summarize proper handling and reprocessing procedures necessary for patient-ready scopes.

Station 2Needle SetupParticipants will learn techniques for assembling FNA needles and preparing cytology slides.

Station 3Reprocessing (Radial, Curvilinear)Participants will receive detailed training on manual and automated disinfection for the reprocessing of echoendoscopes.

Station 4EBUS ProceduresReview the correct procedures for the patient room set-up and the EBUS balloon application and removal.

Station 5Assisting the Physician Highlight the process for preparing, in-serting, and removing the TBNA needle.

ERCP Hands-on StationsHands-on training will be provided through a number of stations:

Station 1Systems and Guidewires/ Physician Assistance Utilizing the ERCP tower, scope and model, each participant will perform a guidewire exchange. Short and long guidewire exchanges will be demonstrated.

Station 2Cannulae and Sphincterotomes Each participant will peform a cannulation of the minor or constricted papilla. Emphasis will be on visibility under fluoroscopy. Station 3Extraction Balloons, Stone Retrieval Baskets, Mechanical Lithotriptors Each participant will review the extraction balloon and stone retrieval basket. Each participant will utilize the lithotriptor to crush a stone.

Station 4StentsEach participant will review the differ-ent types of stents used during ERCP procedures.

Station 5Assisting the Physician Review the details for the nurse’s role during the ERCP procedure.

Reprocessing Specialist TrainingCertificate Program

Course OverviewThis course is available to GI/ pulmonary nurses and reprocessing technicians who are interested in thoroughly understanding the procedures for endoscope care and reprocessing. Participants will learn to recognize the important processes required for pre-cleaning, leak testing, manual cleaning, manual high-level disinfection, endoscope handling and storage of Olympus endoscopes. The course will also cover a basic overview of endoscopy procedures and endoscope nomenclature along with hands-on training for reprocessing Olympus GI & pulmonary endoscopes.

Learning Objectives• Review Olympus reprocessing

guidelines and techniques.• Evaluate common reprocessing errors

and how they correspond to endoscope repairs.

• Discuss proper endoscope handling and storage.

Purpose StatementThis course is designed to provide Olympus customers with the detailed training required to correctly reprocess Olympus GI and pulmonary flexible endoscopes. Endoscopy fundamentals and endoscope construction will be discussed to help explain the reprocess-ing of the intricate inner channels of an endoscope.

Attendees will work in a simulated reprocessing environment to practice the correct reprocessing steps taught during the course.

Course OverviewThis course will help individuals who work with the Olympus flexible endos-copy equipment to become familiar with the essential ins and outs of an endoscope. You will learn about ba-sic components and troubleshooting techniques for the Endoworks program, basic video troubleshooting techniques, equipment design and processes as well as proper maintenance and cleaning.

shooting techniques of the Endoworks system.

• Discuss Olympus endoscope imaging technology and construction.

• Discuss the proper set up and operation of Olympus video system components in relationship to endoscopic procedures.

• Describe proper pre-cleaning and leakage testing of Olympus flexible endoscopes.

• Review how to visually inspect an endoscope for abnormalities, potential repairs, and possible impact on endoscope function.

• Describe the proper handling, packaging and shipping of damaged endoscopes.

Course DescriptionThis course discusses the equipment that makes up the EVIS and EXERA workstations. The course will help participants gain insight into the functionality of each video system’s individual components and learn how they aid in the success of the endo-scopic procedure. Instructors will help participants understand the process for acquiring support and learn how to return EVIS systems back to their proper operating conditions.

Learning Objectives• Learn the wiring configuration and

setup of a properly operating EVIS cart.

• Troubleshoot the cause of an image problem and learn how to correct it.

• Review the compatibility of different equipment (160 and 180 series light sources and video processors) and video ancillary components (monitors, OEP printer).

• Discuss the proper procedure for returning equipment for repair or for requesting a site visit for service.

The course will help participants gain insight into the circuitry and functionality of EVIS and EXERA electronic equipment and provide them with in-depth trouble-shooting techniques for the 160 and 180 series light sources and video processors.

associated with the EVIS and EXERA equipment.

• Use troubleshooting techniques to quickly pinpoint problems relative to cabling, user error or equipment malfunction.

• Learn how to repair and/or replace failed components.

• Discuss the procedure for ordering parts.

• Review procedures for returning equipment for repair or requesting a site visit for service.

Course OverviewThis course provides attendees in-depth training in the advanced features of EndoWorks 7, including system functionality, configuration, network-ing, customization, and troubleshoot-ing. The course addresses functions relevant to both administrative and support personnel and includes exten-sive hands-on training, as well as, direct interaction with the current EndoWorks system. Course DescriptionThis course will help the participantsgain insight into the operationand functionality of the OlympusEndoscope Reprocessor (OER-Pro).It will also provide them within-depth maintenance and failurefault isolation techniques and skills.

Learning Objectives• Review internal and external

components as well as fluid flow and system timing.

• Review how to repair/replace failed components through hands-on Job Performance Measures.

• Review and utilize the units diagnostic aide, the SMT (Software Maintenance Tool).

• Discuss the procedure for ordering parts.

• Discuss the procedure for requesting telephone support or a site visit for service assistance should this become necessary.

• Review how to troubleshoot the most common problems associated with the OER-Pro. The Attendees will resolve Instructor induced failures.

PrerequisitesThe attendee must be employed as aBiomedical Technician/Engineer by thefacility where you will be performingmaintenance on an Olympus OER-Pro.

If a leak is detected, the endoscope must be repaired. Follow manufacturer's instructions.

WARNING: This guide is only a summary of the steps necessary to properly clean your endoscope. Be sure to follow the detailed steps outlined in the ENDOSCOPE REPROCESSING MANUAL that was included with your endoscope when purchased.

Wipe down insertion tube with a water-soaked cloth.

Disconnect all detachable parts.

Flush water, then air, into elevator-wirechannel/auxiliary-water channel.(Auxiliary-water channel may bealternatively flushed by OFP pump).

Aspirate water, thenair through the suctionchannel.

Attach AW channel-cleaning adapter. Flushwater, then air, throughair/water channels.

Attach leakage tester. Turn on pump. Priorto immersion, confirm bending section hasexpanded. Immerse entire endoscope inclean water. Perform leakage test. Angulatetip during test. Remove from water.Detach tester after tip has deflated.

Brush the universalcord portion of thesuction channel.Repeat until alldebris is removed.

Brush the insertiontube portion of thesuction channel.Repeat until alldebris is removed.

Immerse in freshly prepareddetergent solution. Clean all external surfaces. Brush endoscope distal tip (and forceps-elevator, if applicable).

Aspirate detergent solution into suction channel.

Attach injection tube and channel plug. Flush detergent solution into the air and water channels.Flush the forceps-elevatorif applicable.

Flush detergent solution into auxiliary-water / elevator-wire channel.

Soak in detergent solution for the time recommended by the detergent manufacturer

Rinse the entire instrument inclean water. Flush clean water through all channels

(including auxiliary-water / elevator-wire, ifapplicable). Flush air through all channels.

Use a soft, lint-freecloth to remove excessmoisture from endoscopeand cleaning accessoriesin preparation fordisinfection.

• Wear all appropriate personal protective equipment.

• Meticulous cleaning is essential for effective disinfection/sterilization.

• Be sure to reprocess all removable parts (e.g., valves) according to the reprocessing manual.

• Visually inspect the equipment after cleaning. If debris remains, repeat the procedure.

Attach water- resistant cap. Transport to the reprocessing room in a covered container.

Brush the suctioncylinder and instrument channel port. Repeat until all debris is removed.
