Trip Overview

Olympic National Park is one of the most majestic parks in the United

States. Initially established as a national monument in 1909, it later

became a national park in 1938. The furthest reaches of the park are

only 100 miles or so from Seattle, but incredibly Olympic houses some

of the most remote wilderness in the lower 48.

The park encompasses nearly one million acres and is home to a diverse

range of landscapes – temperate rainforests, rugged coastline, and

alpine glaciated mountains. It is one of the most remarkable spots for

photography in the Pacific Northwest.

At Backcountry Journeys, our workshops are aligned with the best

times to photography the park: spring and fall. Both seasons bring the

best conditions to the park. The coastal rainforests are lush with color

and the chance at nice skies over the coastal beaches is amplified. We

will visit the iconic Hoh Rainforest, as well as the lesser known

Quinault Rainforest. These temperate forests are lined with mosses and

ferns, which are towered over by old growth cedars and firs. Early

morning sunshine filters into the forests of Olympic and brings them to

life. It is a spectacular thing to see and photography.

Our other primary focus will be the 73-miles of primitive coastline

within the park. The coastline is dotted with sea stacks, tide pools, and

interesting rocks. The ever-changing tide always make each visit

different. During our workshop, we will photograph the three best

beaches on the Olympic Coast at sunset – Ruby Beach, Rialto Beach,

and Second Beach.

Olympic is undoubtedly an absolute gem of the park service and one of

our favorite photography destinations. We hope that you will join us on

this once in a lifetime excursion!

Please note: This is a “hiker” trip because there are a few hikes involved

(although not every day). The hikes are relatively easy but can and will

test folks who are not normally active. For some of the beaches,

participants will need to be able to hike uphill through sandy and

uneven rocky terrain, with no handrails or other aids. Hikes are a

maximum of 3 miles roundtrip.

The photography is excellent this time of year and we will spend the

day focusing on the incredible forests, mountains, and coastline that

makes up Olympic National Park.

We will share a dinner together as a group and then head to Ruby

Beach to photograph sunset.

Day Three (B,L,D)

Today we will get an early start and head into the Quinault

Rainforest. We will attempt to capture the rising sun breaking

through the forest and then embark on one of the short, but beautiful

hikes within the forest.

We will retreat to our hotel for lunch and relaxation. After dinner, we

will turn to the coast once again. We will assess the weather and pick

one of Olympic’s rugged beaches for sunset.

Day Four (B,D)

We will start the next morning exploring a temperate forest once

again. After our shooting concludes, we will do some group post-

processing after lunch.

Our focus for the next few days will shift to the beaches around La

Push and the magnificent Hoh Rainforest. Sunset once again will be

focused on one of the spectacular beaches nearby.

Day Five (B,L,D)

On our last full day, we will head into the Hoh Rainforest early. Once

again, our goal will be to capture the rising sun through the forest and

then enjoy the soft morning light filtering through the forest. We will

hike along the Hoh River Trail and explore the Hall of Mosses Trail.

More image review and critique around lunchtime, and then like the

previous days, we will assess the weather and pick the best beach for

sunset. If skies cooperate, there is also an opportunity to do so some

twilight and night photography along the coast.

Day Six (B)

We will pack up and start our journey back to the city, but not

before stopping at Bunch Creek Falls along the Quinault River. We

will spend ample time photographing the falls and stop at a few

other spots along the way back depending on conditions.

Flights can be booked home any time after 12pm.

Please Note: Weather delays are possible, and we highly recommend travel insurance. The exact sequence of the itineraries on all photography trips will be based on weather and lighting conditions. The goal on these trips is to make sure we are at the right place at the right time for the perfect light on our subjects. Also, itineraries can change for a variety of other circumstances including floods, forest fires, national park closures, road closures and more. Due to the nature of wildlife and nature photography we do not guarantee any specific sightings or specific compositions regarding wildlife or natural phenomena.

The weather can prove unpredictable in the Pacific Northwest and can
