Bobsled
Speeding down the icehead first and face downat about 90 mph iscertainly an adrenalinerush but one thatrequires a great deal ofconcentration. Gripping
the handles of the sled, the slider pushes offand runs in a bent-overposition for about 150feet.
Skeleton
Both four- and two-man events require
strong starts with synchronized movementsand pinpoint accuracy from the driver whomust negotiate hairpin turns.

Event descriptions
The Sochi Olympicsledding course atSanki is unlike the2010 venue atVancouver in thatit contains slightuphill segments
that will help slowthe sleds, makingthe course lesstreacherous. Luge is a French word
meaning sled. Sliders inthis event descend feet firstand face up in both singlesand doubles competition.Luge has a distinc-tive startin which the ath-lete
swings back and forth onhis sled be-fore push-ingoff with a strong thrustfrom the arms.
Luge
"Park City's StevenHolcomb, the
bobsled driverwho snapped a62-year American
gold medal drought at the 2010Vancouver Games, returns as a
medal favorite in both the two-manand four-man races in Sochi, withAlpine's Chris Fogt as a pushathlete. The U.S. has medal hopesin every sliding discipline, including former worldchampion Noelle Pikus-Pace of Eagle Mountain inskeleton. Any of three
women's bobsled pilots couldwin watch out for dramasurrounding star pushathlete Lolo Jones, too and luger Kate Hansenhas become a threat in
luge with a recentWorld Cup victory.
