Please Pray For: Mass Schedule & Intentions

    Readings

  • The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

This is how the Gospel according to Mark begins. I love this Gospel! When people ask me where to begin reading scripture I almost always tell them to read Mark. It is the shortest and prob-ably the earliest of the Gospels. It has a punch to it and an urgency that I don’t get from the other Synoptic Gospels, and certainly not from John.

Throughout this coming Liturgical Year, we will be reading from Mark. We will both hear and feel an intensity on the part of Jesus to proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God in face of the ruling kingdom that has occupied Israel.

Mark’s Gospel is a “window” into the times (AD 68-73?). There is turmoil in the nation and there has been deep resistance to the preaching of the Good News. Nero has blamed the Christians for the burning of Rome and has inflicted a terrible persecution (64 AD). There is resistance in and around Jerusalem and the Zealots are stirring up trouble. The fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple of Jerusalem in 70 AD have left the Jewish people adrift and bereft once again.

For Mark, the good news is Jesus who is our only true hope. His gospel can then serve as a mirror of our own times. We are called to receive the good news as good news, with great joy. Pope Francis entitled his first Apostolic Exhortation “The Joy of the Gospel” and he meant it! In this time of resistance to the good news of Jesus Christ both from within and without, we are urged in this Advent Season, this new year of God’s grace, to embrace and believe that Jesus is the savior of the world and the absolute best news for the world.

So, here is some good news for this coming week:

Monday, December 8th: Feast of the Immaculate Conception; Holy Day of Obligation; Masses Downtown at 9:00am, 12:00noon and 5:30pm.

Wednesday, December 10th: Advent Holy Hour at the Westside Chapel at 6:30-7:30pm Prayer, Adoration, Reconciliation and Benediction. Come for all or just part of the time.

Thursday, December 11th: Confessions from 5:30-7:30pm Downtown.

Friday, December 12th: Our Lady of Guadalupe; Las Mañanitas at 6:00am and Mass at 7:00am followed by tamales and festivities in the Gathering Space.

Plus, Advent Adventure: Discovering the beauty of the Catholic Church – a video presentation and discussion facilitated by Fr. Brian and Fr. Jim.

Everyday, 24/7: Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the St. Joseph Chapel.

May these opportunities and the time you spend at home with your family in Advent prayer and reflection help you to “prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths” as Isaiah and John the Baptist urge us in this Sunday’s Gospel.

    In Christ, I love you,

    Pastor’s Notebook - December 7, 2014 - 2nd Sunday of Advent

  • “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.” Many of us may recall that proclamation from St. John the Baptist. It certainly reflects the humility expected from all of us as stewards of the Lord. Nevertheless, there is a deeper meaning in that statement which has both implication and applicability to us and our lives. At that time, the time of John the Baptist and Jesus, one of the basic teachings of Jewish rabbis was that a teacher might demand almost anything of his students and followers with one exception: that was to remove the teacher’s sandals. John tells us he is not worthy to do even that. This Advent season asks us to evaluate how we relate to God, and how prepared we

are to serve Christ as His disciple, His steward. Are we worthy? That is the question we need to be asking our-selves. And the truth is that none of us are worthy of the sacrifice and salvation provided us by the Lord. Jesus brings us an immersion in the Holy Spirit which takes us beyond this life and this understanding. Are we ready? It is time to get ready. Saint Pope John Paul II said, “The whole of our life must be an ‘advent,’ a vigilant awaiting of the final coming of Christ.” - See more at www.thecatholicsteward.com

Why do we talk about parish stewardship every year?

Stewardship is fundamental to Christian life. It is the outward response of our thankfulness for the gifts we have received through Christ. We regularly plan and evaluate how we budget and spend for our personal needs and wants; it is also appropriate to consider and plan our charitable giving on a regular basis. To date we have received 964 pledge cards.

We need to hear from at least 159 additional families to meet our goal. If you haven’t yet returned your card, please take time this week to prayerfully reflect on the gifts you’ve received and how you can return, in thanks-giving, a portion back to our Good and Gracious God.

Bring your commitment card to Mass with you or pledge online at www.saintmichaelparish.org

    Stewardship

    Stewardship of Treasure Why Stewardship?

  • The Advent Hymn ‘Veni, Veni Emmanuel’ is often incorrectly described as a Christmas Carol but the name of the hymn - ‘Veni, veni, Emmanuel’ (O Come, O Come, Emmanuel) makes it clear that it’s an Advent hymn. It’s a lyrical paraphrase of the famous ‘O’antiphons and dates from the 12th century. The ‘O’ anti-phons are known to date from at least the 8th century and there’s a fair bit of evidence that they’re older than that. They were originally meant to be sung between December 17 and December 23 and each antiphon refers either to one of Christ’s names or to one of his attributes as mentioned in the Bible.

The hymn is based on Isaiah 7:14:

14 Propter hoc dabit Dominus ipse vobis signum : ecce virgo concipiet, et pariet filium, et vocabitur nomen ejus Emmanuel.

14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son and his name shall be called Emmanuel.

‘Emmanuel’ translates as ‘I shall soon be with you’ and the hymn’s full title can literally be translated into English as “Oh come, oh come, God be with us”. The lyrics calling on Christ to hasten and redeem us is the very essence of Advent. The melody is French and is about 800 years old. The hymn as it is now sung is just over 300 years old and comes from the Psalteriolum Cantionum Catholicarum published in 1710 in Cologne.

Here is an accurate translation from

    Latin to English:

Veni veni, Emmanuelcaptivum solve Israel, qui gemit in exsilio, privatus Dei Filio.Gaude! Gaude! Emmanuel, nascetur pro te Israel!

Come, come, Emmanuel!Release captive Israel,Which mourns in exile,Bereft of the Son of God.Rejoice! Rejoice! EmmanuelWill be born for you, Israel.

Veni, O Iesse virgula,ex hostis tuos ungula,de spectu tuos tartarieduc et antro barathri.Gaude! Gaude! Emmanuelnascetur pro te, Israel!

Come, branch of Jesse,Deliver your people from the heel of the enemy,From the sight of hell,And from the cave of the abyss.Rejoice! Rejoice! EmmanuelWill be born for you, Israel.

Veni, veni O Oriens, solare nos adveniens, noctis depelle nebulas, dirasque mortis tenebras.Gaude! Gaude! Emmanuelnascetur pro te, Israel!

Come, come, o Dawning Light,Console us by your arrival,Dispel the clouds of nightAnd dire shadows of death.Rejoice! Rejoice! EmmanuelWill be born for you, Israel.

Veni, Clavis Davidica, regna reclude caelica, fac iter tutum superum,et claude vias inferum.Gaude! Gaude! Emmanuelnascetur pro te, Israel

Come, Key of David,Open the kingdom of heaven,Make safe the road that leads aboveAnd close the ways that lead below.Rejoice! Rejoice! EmmanuelWill be born for you, Israel.

Veni, veni, Adonai, qui populo in Sinailegem dedisti verticein maiestate gloriae.Gaude! Gaude! Emmanuelnascetur pro te, Israel!

Come, come, Adonai,Who gave the law to the peopleFrom the summit of SinaiIn glorious majesty.Rejoice! Rejoice! EmmanuelWill be born for you, Israel.

Christmas Giving program wraps upThe Christmas Giving program concludes Downtown and at the Westside this weekend. This will be the last oppor-tunity to pick up a Christmas Giving gift tag. Each tag will list the recipient’s gender and age and a “wish list” of one to three gifts. Please choose a tag and purchase one or more of the gifts on the list. Return the unwrapped gift(s) with the original gift tag securely attached.

Since downtown and Westside support different organizations, gifts must be returned to the same place from which the tag came. Please bring all gifts to the Christmas Giving display Downtown or to the Westside by Sunday, December 14, so they can be gathered and distributed in time for Christmas.

Many thanks to those of you who have participated in past years. We look forward to your continued generosity this year.

St. Vincent de Paul Collection Next Week & Christmas Dinner Voucher Program on December 10-12Advent blessings to everyone! Do you know what you will eat for Christmas dinner? Are you worried about being able to provide a Christmas dinner for yourself and your family? Many of our neighbors don’t know what they will eat and don’t know if they can even afford much of a dinner.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society will help with their annual Christmas Voucher Program, which provides food vouchers to people in Thurston and Mason Counties for Christmas dinner for their families. Last year, the Society gave out vouchers for over $30,000. They expect to need a similar amount this year as well.

If you know anyone who may benefit from the Voucher Program, please invite them to come to the Gathering Space on December 10 or 11, 10am-2pm, or on December 12, 10am-noon.

Please be as generous as you can with the St. Vincent collection next week to help pay for this important program. The St. Vincent de Paul Society is very grateful for your prayerful support.

Would you like to ponder the mysteries of time alongside children? In the CGS Level I Adult Formation course, adults immerse themselves in approaching scripture and liturgy with the wonder of a child, and in so doing transform their own relationships with Christ.

The next session of Level I Adult Formation begins at St. Michael Parish on Saturday, January 10 and Sunday, January 11. For more info, or to schedule time to observe in the atrium, contact Mary Trotter at [email protected] or (360) 292-7145.
