April 12, 2015 Sunday of Divine Mercy

Since the Easter Vigil, the Church Universal has been celebrating for eight days. This is called the Octave of Easter. We continue to celebrate for another seven weeks until Pentecost and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We are blessed this year because we will also celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation at the LIfeTeen Mass that evening.

In 2000, St. John Paul II declared the 2nd Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. Just recently, Pope Francis has promulgated a “Holy Year of Mercy” to begin in October. How we need God’s mercy in our world today! More on this as it approaches.

If you can, please come to Jeffrey Moore’s presenta-tions on Catholic Morality: What and WHY the Church teaches what it does. This is an excellent way to dive deeply into issues that face us today and know how to understand them in the light of scripture and sacred tradition.

Lastly, please keep Fr. Brian in your prayers this week as he goes for his annual retreat. May the Lord bless him abundantly during these days.

In grateful thanksgiving to all of you throughout this Easter season. In Christ, I love you,

“The community of believers was of one heart and one mind.” For those who practice stewardship as a way of life every passage from Holy Scripture contains a stewardship message. However, today’s readings are particularly special in that regard. The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles speaks to the sense of unity and teamwork of the early Church. One of the great misconceptions of this particular scriptural passage is that it reflects what we might term a “sense of Com-munism.” However, as we reflect upon this, we must understand a basic difference. Communism says “What you think is yours is really mine.” Our faith, our commu-nity, and our good stewards say, “What may seem to be mine is really yours.” No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own. This is the stewardship understanding that, first and foremost, everything comes from, is gifted by, and is possessed by God, not by us. In addition, stewards understand that all their gifts are to be shared with others. The key to this entire passage is that the early Christians regarded people as more important than things. As difficult as this may be for us, that is to what we are called, as well.

Annual Catholic Appeal 2015

It’s almost that time! We’ve received our Archdiocesan goal for the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal. This year, we’re being asked to contribute $274,611!

Remember! Gifts received in excess of our goal are returned to the Parish as a rebate! With that in mind, we have set a Rebate Goal of $50,000 – increasing our goal to $324,611.

What will we do with that additional $50,000? We will continue to provide a Catholic presence in Olympia and reach out in service!

How?

• We will give $10,000 directly to our St. Vince de Paul ministry.

• $10,000 will be used as “seed” money to Interfaith Works so that shower facilities can be installed at the shelter.

• The balance of our rebate will be combined with the remaining rebate received this year to allow us to complete some enhancements in our church and Gathering Space (think carpet and paint!).

St. Vincent de Paul Collection: This Week

Easter Blessings to all! As we rejoice in the risen Christ, we remember that Jesus died for us, as well as for all of our sisters and brothers who struggle to keep a roof over their heads, keep their utilities turned on, or keep a supply of necessary prescription drugs. Your generous donations make it possible for the St. Vincent de Paul Society to help our neighbors be able to pay for these things.

Today is our monthly collection. Please look for hospitality ministers in the back of the church and in the Gathering Space. They will be happy to accept your donations. Thank you for your faithful support.
