"Waterside Economizers"Presented by Larry Konopacz
The presentations focus is on design considerations forWater Side Economizers. It begins with a review of thekey requirements and exceptions for water sideeconomizers as prescribed in the ASHRAE EnergyStandard 90.1-2010. Several design approaches will bereviewed highlighting the pros and cons of each. Thereviews will include system designs and pipingarrangements that include non-integrated andintegrated economizers, cooling tower sizing strategiesand winterization considerations, gasket plate heatexchangers selection and sizing considerations, andclosed circuit cooling tower considerations. Thepresentation will also include operationalconsiderations for entering and exiting economizermode to minimize equipment problems and overalloperating costs.Larry Konopacz is the Manager of Training and
Education for the Bell & Gossett Little Red Schoolhouse.Mr. Konopacz is a LEED AP and a QualifiedCommissioning Process Provider (QCxP) with a wealthof industry experience having served in a variety oftraining, engineering and manufacturing capacities atBell & Gossett during the past 30 years. He is also acertified VBLSS Black Belt and Lean Master. He earnedBS and MS degrees in Industrial Technology at WesternIllinois University, and an MBA in ManagerialAccounting at DePaul University. He is a member ofASHRAE, the Hydraulic Institute, ASPE, and the USGBC.

Dear Rocky Mountain ASHRAE:
First off, I would like to thank Shanti Pless and Bethany Beers for their presentantions at our March Meeting.The chapter will be planting a tree via the Mile Hi Million initiative in their names.
The April meeting will be a lunch meeting in Denver. Our speaker will be Larry Konopacz with Bell & Gossettand he will be speaking about “Waterside Economizers.”
I want to thank the Technical Conference committee for putting together a great line up of speakers and topics.The Technical Conference will be April 19th at the Sheraton Denver West. Please make plans to attend and ifyou have any questions please contact myself or Jon Rundquist.

SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING COMMITTEEThe Sustainable Engineering Committee is committed toadvocate sustainable design, construction and operation toour members, the industry and our community throughadvocacy group meetings and educational seminars. Westrive to promote sustainable practices at all ASHRAE eventsand sponsored activities.

PROJECT UPDATE - 2013 SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT
Denver Rescue Mission | Lawrence Street
Project Description: In preparation for the 2013 Annual ASHRAE Society Meeting, the Rocky Mountain chapter hasselected the Denver Rescue Mission Lawrence Street facility as the Annual Meeting Sustainability Project in an effort toreduce the environmental impact of the meeting.
ASHRAE President and Denver Mayor Visit Sustainability ProjectA construction presentation was held on February 6, 2013 at the Denver Rescue Mission Lawrence Street Shelter. Thepresentation included an overview of the project, construction progress, anticipated energy and cost reductions and theimpact of the project to the Rescue Mission. The presentation was attended by ASHRAE President Tom Watson, DenverMayor Michael B. Hancock, project donors, project team members, ASHRAE members and Rescue Mission personnel.
Construction Update: Construction is starting to wrap up! Several projects have already been completed and theremaining projects will be finished at the end of March 2013. ECM1 Lighting Upgrade: The lighting fixture upgrade and installation of occupancy sensors is complete. SeveralRescue Mission staff members have already noted the improved light quality and levels. During site visits, theproject team also noticed the improved light quality.
ECM 2 Replace Split System Air Conditioning Units: The split systems are scheduled to be replaced in March2013. Preparation work has already started to upgrade an existing electrical panel for this project.
ECM 3 Upgrade HVAC Controls – Central DDC Control: Design and programming for the new control system iscomplete. Control wiring has been installed and many control components are already functional.
ECM 4 Reduce Steam Leakage and Replace Steam Control Valves: The steam radiator traps and control valveshave been replaced throughout the building. During construction a significant amount of debris was foundbetween the radiator fins, reducing the radiator effectiveness. All debris was removed from the radiators andstaff at the Mission have commented on the increased heat in the building.
ECM 5 Replace 3rd Floor MAU with Heat Recovery Ventilator: Installation of the HRV serving the 3rd Floordormitory is complete. Construction went smoothly, even with the very cold winter temperatures duringinstallation of the HRV on the roof and start-up of the unit. Mission maintenance staff noted that the unit isoperating well.

ECM6 Replace Domestic Hot Water Heaters, Low Flow Shower Heads: Installation of the low flow shower headsis complete. The two new high efficiency DHW heaters have been installed and after replacing a brokencomponent on one water heater, they are both operational. The water heaters are providing the hot waterneeds at the Mission for showers and cooking that were not previously met.
ECM 7 Install Solar Domestic Hot Water: The solar DHW system installation is underway and is scheduled to becomplete in just a few weeks. The installation of (4) 120 gallon solar buffer tanks and associated equipment isscheduled to be completed first, followed by installation of (8) evacuated tube solar collectors on the roof.
Message from the Mission: From Brad Meuli, President/CEO of the Denver Rescue Mission: “We are excited aboutthe project ASHRAE has undertaken for Denver Rescue Mission. The Lawrence Street Shelter serves homeless and poormen, women and children on a daily basis through meals, shelter, food boxes, clothing, hygiene products, and medicalcare. It’s a 24 hour a day operation with commercial laundry and kitchen operations. The targeted annual savings toDenver Rescue Mission is estimated at $19,000. Those savings will provide an additional 10,000 meals to those in need.It’s truly amazing to see this organization come together with expertise in each of their fields to make these greatlyneeded updates to our building. We simply cannot help as many people as we do without the generosity of ourcommunity.”

ROCKY MOUNTAIN ASHRAE HISTORY
On May 4th, 2011 Rocky Mountain ASHRAE held a dinner meeting at Dave and Busters. Paul Pieper of VenmarCES gave a presentation on meeting and exceeding energy requirements using Air to Air Energy Recovery Systemsand Equipment. This was just after the yearly Rocky Mountain ASHRAE Technical Conference. The 2011 TechnicalConference brought in nearly $35,000, all of which was donated to ASHRAE Society for Research Promotion. TheMay meeting was the last meeting before Megan Van Wieren was formally put into the Junior Board Member positionper the election at the March meeting. As of the May newsletter there were a total of 8 job listings posted on theRocky Mountain ASHRAE Job Board.

HVAC Design: Level I - Essentials
