Climate Change and Its Implication for AgriculturePhil Robertson, MSU Distinguished Professor of Ecosystem ScienceClimate change is expected to have major implications for agriculture in the Midwest in general, and in the Great Lakes States and Michi-gan in particular. Warmer, shorter winters with less snow cover have implications for soil fertility, greenhouse gas fluxes, and agricultural pests. Hotter summers will reduce average field crop yields and affect evapotranspiration. More frequent early spring warm-ups will threaten bud set in fruit crops, and more variable rainfall will complicate planting schedules and increase soil erosion. In this talk, Robertson will focus on these trends and some of the ways that farming is changing to respond to cli-mate change. Robertson has been studying the biogeochemistry of agriculture and climate change for over 20 years at MSU’s W.K. Kellogg Biological Station near Kalamazoo.

Michigan’s Ghostly BeaconsDianna Stampfler, President, Promote MichiganWhat is it about lighthouses that attracts ghostly spirits? Maybe it’s simply a passion that will not go away. Lighthouse keepers were known to be extremely dedicated to their profession and it seems that many were never able to give up -- even after death! Nearly two dozen lighthouses in Michigan are rumored to be haunted. From the smell of cigar smoke at Seul Choix Point Light to the mysterious housekeeping at White River Light Station, and the antics at Waugoshance Shoel, these stories will be sure to entertain. Our speaker is Dianna Stampfler, a passionate professional speaker and freelance writer. She is also president of Promote Michigan, a company dedicated to communicating Michigan his-tory, and the wonderful sites and events that the state offers.

Beer 101Rex Halfpenny, Publisher of the Michigan Beer GuideThe beer revolution is on and most Americans are missing it! In this fast-paced lecture you will be introduced to the history and evolution of beer, from its roots at the very dawn of civilization through the industrial revolution, to the modern renaissance rapidly unfolding today. Topics will include summaries of the brewing process, ingredients used, style diver-sity, tasting and evaluating beer, and steps to help you successfully participate in the beer revolution. No beer will actually be served. Our presenter is Rex Halfpenny, beer industry writer/publisher, speaker, and nationally certified beer judge.

It also helps us to develop a deeper relationship with the Divine. Nan Spence is uniquely quali-fied to teach Centering Prayer as she holds a master’s degree in counseling and theology and works as a psychotherapist and spiritual counselor in Saginaw. History & Philosophy of God (351)With the continuing turmoil in the Middle East and the common misinformation in the public forum concerning Islamic faith, it ap-pears to be a good time to review and discuss the foundational concepts and early years of Islam. Over the history of all great reli-gious traditions there have been eruptions of radical fundamentalist groups that, although non-representative of the core system, seem to be used as an excuse to malign the faith. ISIL has been that excuse at this juncture in history. It is critical for us to understand this important faith community as Islam is the fastest growing religious tradition in the world, and with 1.6 billion members it will soon be the largest faith in the world. We will start at the beginning of the tradition in 610 CE and the emergence of Muhammad.

Childhood Memories: From the Tennessee Hollow to the Motor City (355)This class will be led by the author of Ten-nessee Hollow to Michigan’s Motor City 1942-1952, Sally Carney. She will describe coming of age in a time of international and national turbulence, as well as personal turbulence within during her formative years leading up to adulthood. The immense differences between life on a Tennessee tenant farm and life in the industrial city of Detroit at that time are fertile grounds for showing the overwhelming need for “fitting-in” and the urgent desire for acceptance. The WWII years’ migration adjustments to families and especially children in the U.S. will bring in-sight into our 2014 way of thinking. Sally is a retired school teacher who taught in Detroit and Saginaw. Her book will be available for sale.Thursdays: May 7 & 14 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $18 Members; $36 Non-Members Room: C129

Lost Christianities (353)Most of us are aware that today there are thousands of variations of Christian worship from Catholicism to non-denominational me-ga-churches. But how many of us are aware of the wide range of beliefs held by “Chris-tians” from the time of Jesus through the first three centuries? Professor Bart D. Ehrman, Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, examines that early period and provides a fascinating look at the myriad of beliefs floating around the Near East and Mediterranean at that time. OLLI member Barb Mitchell will use Dr. Ehrman’s Great Course lectures as well as materials from her own growing library of early Christian beliefs and practices to take you on a voyage into the religious past.Thursdays: July 23, 30, August 6 & 13 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

World War I: Part One (1914 - 1916) (357)Interest in WWI has increased sharply in recent years as the centenary of the outbreak in 1914 approached, and as the last of the veterans of the conflict died. From several perspectives, the war was the most cata-strophic of the twentieth century, the one that created the conditions out of which the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany became the most serious threats to freedom and peace in modern history. Setting the stage and the outbreak of war will be covered in the first session. Other sessions will cover the stale-mate on the Western Front; the war at sea, in the Near East, and in Africa; and changes on the Eastern Front and in the Near East. The class will be led by Northwood University history professor John Pafford.Tuesdays: May 26, June 2, 9 & 16 •10 a.m. - noonPrice: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

Cooke’s Wagon Road of 1846 and the Mormon Battalion (358)What connection ties together Bay City’s “River of Time,” the Lewis and Clark Expe-dition, the California Gold Rush, Brigham Young, the Eisenhower Road System and the Gadsden Purchase? Answer: Why, the U.S. Army’s Mormon Battalion, of course. If you have not heard of them, you’re not alone. Yet this 500-man infantry unit, specifically recruited at President James K.

Polk’s request, proved to be General Stephen Kearny’s “ace in the hole” in securing “alta California” during the Mexican War. This class will place the battalion in context of its recruitment, service, and accomplishments. It will be led by Kevin Henson, an amateur historian and Mapping & Project Consultant for Mapntour of Midland.Wednesday: June 3 • 10 a.m. - NoonPrice: $8 Members; $16 Non-Members Room: C129

United States population’s new concerns and obsessions with warfare. We will also focus on gender issues and the changing image of the “dangerous woman” during the 1950s. Illustrated through film clips and photo-graphs from that era, America’s subconscious became inundated with a message of war. The new consumer economy, the baby boom, Hollywood’s involvement in the Red Scare, and American politics in the Eisenhower Era also played a role in American’s shift from peace to permanent war as mirrored by aspects of everyday life. The class will be led by Katherine Ellison, an SVSU adjunct faculty member and managing director of History Geek Consulting.Mondays: July 20, 27, August 3 & 10 10 a.m. - NoonPrice: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

World Political Update (361)It is time for another look at what is occur-ring politically in the world. This course will focus on topics such as the Russian/Ukraine conflict, ISIL in Iraq and ISIL in Syria, nuclear negotiations with Iran, the AUMF request from President Obama, the worsen-ing relations with Israel and other topics as requested. As always, we will weave aca-demic approaches and analysis to pragmatic political developments. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct political science professor and attorney.Fridays: May 22, 29, June 5 & 12 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C100

Justice: What is the Right Thing to Do? (362)Is murder ever right? How much is a life worth? Is redistribution taxation forced labor? Is it ever right to lie? These questions and more are the subject matter of Harvard professor Michael Sandel’s book and very popular course on this topic. In this class we will watch the first eight of his 24 lectures: The Moral Side of Murder, The Case for Cannibalism, Putting a Price Tag on Life, How to Measure Pleasure, Free to Choose Who Owns Me?, This Land is My Land, and Consenting Adults. Each lecture is about 30 minutes long and will be followed by about

30 minutes of discussion. The class will be moderated by OLLI member Carol Gohm.Thursdays: July 9, 16, 23 & 30 • 10 a.m. - NoonPrice: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

Cuba: 1952 - 1960 (363)Most recently the United States has started the process of normalization of diplomatic and trade relations with Cuba. This in turn has led to vocal resistance from Republicans in Congress and ex-patriot Cubans living in the U.S. This course will discuss Cuba spe-cifically from the reign of Fulgencio Batista from 1952 - 1959 and the concomitant revo-lution from 1953 - 1959, culminating with the July 26th movement involving the Castro brothers and Che Guevara. We will specifi-cally address the question: Why did the U.S. insist on supporting a repressive brutal mili-tary dictator who suspended the Cuban Con-stitution and eliminated individual freedoms? Time permitting, we will explore what Cuba will look like in the months and years ahead, and what normalization will mean to Cubans. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an ad-junct political science professor and attorney.Fridays: July 10, 17, 24 & 31 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: B109
