For the 2011-2012, OLLI academic year, we are again offering a tiered membership, designed to provide you, our students, with options and monetary savings. As you will see below there are 3 different memberships from which to choose.

Bronze Membership:$25 Membership fee

See the above member versus non-member pricing. Pricing for this membership has remained the same.

Taking 16 class hours (any combination of 1, 2, 3, and 4 week classes) makes it worth becoming a Bronze Member.

Silver Membership:$60 Membership fee

Our objective is to simplify the Silver membership. While the upfront cost has increased from $35 to $60, members will now realize their tuition discounts (below) immediately. These savings will offset the increased cost of the membership. Most importantly, there is no more tracking of class hours before your discount is applied.

Taking a total of 24 class hours, like last year, makes it worth becoming a Silver member.

Gold Membership:$350 Membership fee

The Lewis and Clark Expedition: 1804-1806

Kathleen Ebers Piccard earned a degree in history from Michigan State University and spent the next 32 years teaching. She is a long standing member of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation.

In May, 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out on an amazing journey across the Louisiana Territory. It has been 200 years since then, but their U.S. conquests and stories of personal adventures have given them a place in history as two of the world’s greatest explorers. This class will take us on the trail with these true American heroes who faced unknown people, harsh conditions and unexplored lands. Join us from the beginning to the aftermath of this journey and discover new insights—why President Jefferson sent them, to the amazing discoveries found along the way, to the importance of a fifteen year old Native American girl named Sacagawea. Get your boots on and come along the rugged footpath with us.

Maritime History of the Great Lakes

Matthew L. Daley, Ph.D., is associate professor of history at Grand Valley State University. Dr. Daley’s research focuses on urban public and social policy, Great Lakes maritime culture and technology, and public history.

He is editor of the Grand Rapids Historical Society’s magazine Grand River Valley History.

Though Michigan is surrounded by the Great Lakes, has a climate shaped by the water, and is a source of readily available water, most residents have only a limited knowledge of its history. One of the largest inland waterways in the world, the Great Lakes boasts a rich and complex maritime culture dating back thousands of years. That history covers not only industrial cities and ships, but also fishing, wildlife, and tourism. This course will focus on the development of sail and steam vessels, trade patterns, lighthouses, life-saving, shipwrecks, urbanization, and the role of women, maritime museums and historical research.

Are We Ready?Emergency Preparedness 2012

Richard M. Tooker MD, MPH, was Kalamazoo County’s chief medical officer from 1987-2010 and also their medical examiner from 1990-2010. Dr. Tooker teaches at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine and was a staff physician for the emergency department at Saint Mary’s Hospital from 1989-1999.

From the civil defense system of the Cold War days to the Homeland Security and Domestic Preparedness systems of today, we have tried to optimize our nation’s security. The nation, its states, and communities continue to face domestic and global enemies. Since 9/11, the development of All Cause, All Hazard Preparedness has resulted in a new

infrastructure with a budget in the billions of dollars. Dr. Tooker will present a historical perspective on emergency preparedness, the current systems and funding cuts, with special attention to Michigan and local emergency capabilities.

The 1945 Yalta Conference: The Fate of Post-War Europe

Neal Getz teaches American government at Grand Rapids Community College. He has also taught classes on the Constitution, Comparative Government and the Holocaust at GVSU. He worked for ten years as a legislative analyst for the Illinois General Assembly.

At the 1945 Yalta Conference, wartime leaders Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin met to decide the fate of post-war Europe and the final assault on Japan. Professor Getz will examine these three leaders, the agreements at Yalta, and the medium and long term effects of their decisions.

Astronomy’s 1st Golden Age of Discovery: 1890 - 1950

Tuesdays, 1:30-3:30 pm

David L. DeBruyn served as chief curator of the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium for four decades. As Curator Emeritus, he works on special projects for the Planetarium, and continues to write the column “West Michigan Skies” for The Grand Rapids Press. Dave has authored astronomy articles and presented numerous lectures around the country.

Students who enjoyed last winter’s course on “The Universe Revealed” will want to sign up early for this one. In this course, Dave will delve into the extraordinary insight of scientists like George Ellery-Hale, Edwin Hubble, Harlow Shapley, Henry Norris Russell, and Albert Einstein. These early pioneers drew an accurate picture of the nature of the universe during the first half of the 20th century. Discussion will include the technological advancements that made these discoveries possible.


T’ai Chi

Tuesdays, 1:30-3:30 pm

Marnie Kotwick is a physical therapist with Gentiva Home Health Care. She teaches Chungliang style T’ai Chi in the Grand Rapids area. Marnie is a guest lecturer in the physical therapy program at GVSU, teaching students how to incorporate T’ai Chi in rehabilitation programs.

T’ai Chi is a blend of the healing and martial arts, the purpose being physical health and spiritual strength. It employs breathing exercises and slow, fluid movements to achieve

harmony between body and mind. T’ai Chi will help you attain an emotional, mental and spiritual awareness that calms and heals.

Note: Wear comfortable clothing.

Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Richard Grossenbacher is a retired Special Agent of the United States Secret Service. He currently is an adjunct professor of criminal justice at GVSU.

On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Two months later, James Earl Ray, a fugitive, was arrested and charged with the crime. This course will examine the assassination of Dr. King, the evidence and possible motive(s) of the assassin.

Tom Rademacher has served over 30 years as a writer at The Grand Rapids Press. He has published several books and he loves to share his stories with the public.

Rademacher, who is or could be knocking on your door! Join Tom for a fun-filled two hours as he pilots you through his successful career. He’ll share how he got his start (not what you think) and introduce you to some remarkable people he’s brought to our front porches. A storyteller who specializes in revealing the extraordinary among the extra-ordinary, he’ll wrap up his presentation by offering signed copies of his new book , Knocking at Your Door.

Pain at the Pump: What’s with these Oil & Gas Prices?

Lee Smith is a certified petroleum geologist and has worked offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Last year OLLI students enjoyed Lee’s presentation of the 2010 gulf oil spill “Drill Baby Drill.”

For years we have felt the fluctuation of oil and gas prices. Lee will ask the question, “Does the available supply of oil and gas always determine the price?” This course will examine supply and demand, deep water drilling, locations of oil and gas reserves, and energy markets.

Dr. Albert Bell is professor of history at Hope College. His research focus is on ancient Rome in the first century A.D. In addition to articles and stories,

Dr. Bell has published many historical mysteries including Death Goes Dutch, Kill Her Again and his recent, The Corpus Conundrum.

Travel back to ancient Roman times with Albert Bell. His focus will be on the early Christians and how they interacted with the Roman government. The role of the provincial administrators regarding the gospels and Acts will also be examined. Dr. Bell will conclude with a discussion on women in the New Testament and the early church.


The Myths of Mormonism

Charles Stoddard received his MBA from Harvard Business School. He spent 14 years at Michigan National Bank, nine of those years as its president. Chuck was also CEO of Grand Bank. He has been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

There has been a heightened curiosity about the Mormon Church as a result of two Mormon presidential candidates and a popular Broadway musical. Along with the increased visibility of the Mormon Church, there is also an increase in misconceptions. From the perspective of a lifelong member, the following myths about Mormonism will be discussed: 1) Mormons aren’t Christians 2)Mormons are a cult 3) Mormons don’t believe in the Bible 4) Mormons worship Joseph Smith 5) Mormons still practice polygamy and 6) a Mormon U.S. president would report to the president of the Church.


The Wonderful World of Wine

Peter Eizel has been in the wine industry for over 20 years and is the wine department manager for Martha’s Vineyard. His travels and his personal experience make him the “go to” person for wine.

OLLI students were informed and entertained last June so Peter has returned for an encore. Follow his outline of the industry’s history, the chief wine regions worldwide (Napa, Bordeaux, Tuscany, Spain and the Pacific Northwest), and learn the meaning of taste profile, grower views, and grape diversities. Wine sampling is part of your learning experience and entertainment!

Growing Up in Nazi Germany

Gerhard Theophile is an engineer and translator who spent 43 years in international business in Germany and the U.S. He is currently writing a book on his personal experiences about growing up in Germany during World War II.

Born in 1932 in Germany, Gerhard has a remarkable story of luck, courage and resilience to share. Drafted into the Hitler Youth at 10, Gerhard learned the skills required to survive this time of “National Socialism” under

Hitler. His resourcefulness made him a survivor. Gerhard will recall the days of black market trading, the value of 5000 cigarettes, and the meaning behind jewelry wrapped in a classmate’s handkerchief.


India’s Exotic Contradictions

Keith St. Clair is a political science professor at GRCC. Keith serves on the board of the Michigan Conference of Political Scientists and is an active member of the World Affairs Council.

With over 1 billion people and a proportionate number of gods, India is an intersection of world religions. India also boasts one of the world’s oldest civilizations. It recently acquired the capability to threaten civilization, given its nuclear weaponry and animosity towards Pakistan. Keith will present an overview of India as well as his cultural observations of the subcontinent. Come and experience all of India’s exotic contradictions.


Fine Art and Fashion in the Early 20th Century

Dr. Suzanne Eberle is a professor of art history at Kendall College of Art and Design. Her expertise includes modern and contemporary art and aesthetic issues related to the body, including the history of fashion.

In the first 45 years of the 20th century, the worlds of fashion and fine art began to collide as haute couture designers, painters and sculptors informed and inspired each other’s works. Dr. Eberle will examine three important periods of early Modernism during which this collaborative spirit is most evident. The following fashion/art connections will give you much to think about: Poiret and Fauvism; Chanel and Cubism; Schiaparelli and Surrealism.


The Presidential Lecture Series: Gerald R. Ford

Gleaves Whitney is director of GVSU’s Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies. He is a scholar who writes and lectures nationally on presidential history and leaders. He is one of OLLI’s most popular instructors.

Gerald R. Ford is a president with

a “branding” problem. Outside of West Michigan, people typically remember three things about him - the controversial Nixon pardon; the debate with Jimmy Carter in which he claimed the Soviet Union did not dominate Poland; and the stumble on the steps of Air Force One, which Chevy Chase immortalized in his Saturday Night Live skit. In our nation’s collective memory, these three vignettes dominate the public’s fading impressions of our 38th president, yet they obscure what a great man Gerald R. Ford truly was - our hometown hero whose West Michigan roots instilled a strong moral compass and a life dedicated to public duty. Join us for a presentation that explores the real Jerry Ford - president, representative, wartime hero, football star, neighbor, and - not least, husband of Betty Ford.

“Love is All, Love is You”: The Spirituality of the Beatles

Charles Honey is a national and local award winning freelance writer who specializes in issues of faith, values, and spirituality. He has been with The Grand Rapids Press for over 25 years, serving as religion editor.

For all that has been written and said about the Beatles’ cultural legacy, relatively little attention has been paid to their spiritual impact. Their music opened listeners’ minds to a more wondrous, adventurous and love-based view of life, while their individual quests increased popular interest in Eastern religious practices. Charley will explore the spiritual elements of Beatles music and band members’ religious views through selected readings, video clips and their music.

supporting a single payer system and watch the PBS documentary Sick Around the World.

Jason Glaser is the director of La Isla foundation. In 2008, he founded the organization to help workers in the lowlands of Central America after directing a documentary that

revealed that pesticide use in Latin America was causing a devastating chronic kidney disease. This raging epidemic is directly associated with working in the sugar cane fields and is now the leading cause of death among men in the area, hence the name the “Island of Widows.” Jason will look at the question of the high costs to a community because of our love of sugar, bananas and coffee as well as address what his organization is doing to bring prevention and health care to the workers.
