2016 GE-Reagan FOUNDATION Scholarship Program. This national program awards college scholarships to high school seniors who embody the characteristics of President Ronald Reagan at school, in the community, in the workplace, and at home. They are looking for students with: Leader-ship, Drive, Integrity, and Citizenship. Recipients receive $10,000 renewable scholarships – up to $40,000 per student. Apply online through www.reaganfoundation.org/scholarships. Dead-line: January 7. Deadline: January 9 U of H Frontier Fiesta Association Academic Achievement Scholarship for incoming freshmen to UH. The $1,000 Academic Achievement Scholarship will be selected on the basis of overall academic performance. Applicants are asked to submit 1 original and 3 copies of the following: 1. Completed Application; 2. Transcript: 1 official, 3 unofficial ; 3. List of involvements and achieve-ments; 4. 2 letters of recommendation. www.uh.edu/fiesta. Received Deadline: January 23. George and Mary Josephine Hamman Founda-tion Scholarships. The $18,000 will be paid over eight semesters for a four-year college or universi-ty. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need and academic achievement. To access appli-cation and information go to www.hammanfoundation.org. Deadline: Febru-ary 19. Out for Education. This scholarship is for stu-dents who identify as part of the LGBT community. In addition to the application, the scholarship com-mittee will need a transcript, the required essay, two letters of recommendation and a resume. Visit http://outforeducation.org for application. Dead-line: February 29. Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union. GCEFC will present scholarships annually in the amount of $1,000.00 – a total of $4,000.00 – to two qualified students selected from applicants who plan to enter the field of education and one scholar-ship for any field. Seniors and parents will need to be a member in good standing with GCEFCU and the parent/legal guardian must work in a school dis-trict in Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery or Waller Counties.

Scholarships The Terry Foundation Scholarship. This schol-arship is for spring 2016 graduates of Texas high schools who demonstrate leadership ability, finan-cial need, and scholastic achievement. The amount of the Terry scholarship is based upon the cost of attendance at the Texas university they will be at-tending and can be applied to the cost of tuition, fees, books, on-campus room and board, and mis-cellaneous expenses. The Terry Foundation schol-arship is a last-dollar award, as such Terry Scholars will have all unmet financial need covered by the Foundation. Check to see if your Texas University is offering this scholarship and their application deadline.

Drive Smart: No Distractions, No Excuses Teen

Digital Short Contest. Teens, create a digital short to help educate your peers about the dangers of driving distracted. In addition to taking a positive step to help keep your friends and others safe on the road, you’ll earn a chance to win $5,000! For official rules, click here. Deadline: December 15. $20,000 Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Scholar-ship. This 20,000 scholarship is for High School Seniors through College Freshman. The Foot Locker Scholar Athletes program honors student athletes who demonstrate excellence in school, on their sports teams, and in their communities. Whether you are the fastest on the team or the most supportive player, we want to hear how sports helped you grow into a strong leader at school and in your community. The scholarship is open to stu-dents entering college in the fall of 2016 as a fresh-man at a four-year school for an undergraduate de-gree. Applicants must be involved in high school, intramural or community-based sports and have a minimum GPAof 3.0. Get more information on the $20,000 Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Scholar-ship. Deadline: December 17 Hispanic Scholarship Fund To view the require-ments please visit www. hsf.net and apply. In-clude your degree/major, why you selected it, and how this degree/major will help you achieve your goals.” The essay should be between 500 and 1000 words. Your submissions must be sent to them by email at: [email protected] . Please include the name and location of the school you are presently attending. Deadline: June 10.

Military Navy ROTC Scholarship. This is an oppor tunity to help pay for your college education. For an offi-cial scholarship application go online at www.nrotc.navy.mil or call MMC Webster at 800-861-3300. Deadline December 1.

ACC’s TSI Test Prep One-Day Camp. Date: November 6; Place: ACC; Cost - All day $30 which includes lunch. $15 for Math and $15 for Reading/writing if taken separately. Register at ACC Mar-ketplace by November 4.

Trinity University will be hosting an interview weekend on November 7-8th in Houston with lo-cations in Rice Village and City Centre. If you have any students who are planning to apply for Fall 2016, we encourage them (though we do not require) to schedule an interview. The Sleeklens Academic Scholarship. Sleeklens is proud to announce its academic scholarship pro-gram for 2016. Three winners will each receive $2000 to will cover their academic expenses for the 2016 academic year. Texas Common Course Numbering System If you are taking a Dual Credit class from ACC and wonder what it will transfer to a four year college, then use the Texas Common Course Numbering System. Go to http://www.tccns.org/ to compare schools. It is easy to do and let you know if a course matches up with the numbering system in order to transfer.

SAT Prep Classes

The SAT will be offered four more times in its current format. The dates are listed below, along with the after school test prep class dates offered at AHS. The cost for the prep class is $75. The class requires a minimum of 10 students or it will not be offered. All materi-als will be provided. Students only need to bring a pencil and the calculator they will use on the SAT.

Through interaction with business executives and entrepreneurs, participating students are introduced to the challenges and opportunities of the free enter-prise system. Click here for application. Deadline: November 16th to the College and Career Coun-selor. Only four application from each school will be submitted. Juniors: Bronfman Fellowships. This is a 5 week all-expenses paid trip to Israel. The Bronfman Fellowships experiences privies a forum for inquisitive and creative Jewish students to en-gage with important texts and learn from respected teachers in a community of diverse peers. NCAA Eligibility Center If you wish to participate in NCAA Division I or II athletics, you need to be certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center. You need to qualify academically and you will also need to be cleared as an amateur student-athlete. 1. Register at the beginning of you sophomore

year at www.eligibilitycenter.org. 2. Go on Naviance and request a transcript to be

sent to the NCCA Eligibility Center at the end of your junior year.

3. Take the ACT or SAT and use the code “9999” to have your official scores sent directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center.

4. Check with your high school counselor to make sure you are on track to graduate on time with your class and are taking the required amount of NCAA-approved core courses.

5. Request final amateurism certification during your senior year (beginning April 1).

6. In Naviance, request a final transcript with proof of graduation to be sent to the NCAA Eli-gibility Center after graduation.

The regular fees for the SAT Reasoning Test is $52.50.

Both SAT and ACT registration can be completed on-line and paid on-line with a credit card. It is advisable to complete your registration well before the deadline for both tests. You can register for either test months in advance. Don’t wait until the last minute and then for-get. If you do not, late fees will apply. Each testing organization has a list of costs on their web sites. For every deadline missed, the cost go up.

The regular fees for the ACT is $39.50. The ACT Plus Writing is $56.50. It is encouraged to take the writing section; most colleges require a writing score. Standby testing fee is an additional $47.

Fee Waivers: Both SAT & ACT are now giving 2 fee waivers each for those students who are on free and reduced lunches. At AHS see Mrs. Barajas for yours and at MHS see Mrs. Chenda Moore.

If you want to see if you qualify for free and reduced lunches, go the district’s web site for an online form and income chart to see you qualify. Also, many colleges reduce or waive application fees if a student is on free and reduced lunches. Also, keep the fee waivers for these tests for your records as proof that you qualified for the fee waiver for college application fees.

College & Career Center

Seniors, if you haven’t taken the ACT/SAT, now is the time to sign up for the ACT and/or SAT. Juniors, you need to take your tests before the end of your junior year. You will need those scores to college applications and scholarships at the beginning of the fall. Which test should you take? That depends. Get a sample tests and see which test matches up with your test taking abil-ity. Both tests are accepted at colleges across the country, and you might find that you perform better on one style of test. The SAT is given at AHS in October, November, December, January, and May. The ACT will be given at MHS in Oc-tober, February, and June. Practice Tests & registration packets for both tests are available online. SAT - Col-legeboard.com and ACT - ACT.org.
