The Sustainable Manufacturer Network (SMN) strives to help manufacturers put sustainability to work in their plants and operations cost-effectively.

Our website is designed with a continuous stream of fresh sustainability content, a job board, and a networking section that cultivates meaningful exchanges and group collaboration. We launched an e-magazine rich with original articles and stories that engage readers and drive traffic to our advertisers’ websites. We’ve created a strong presence in social media on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. And we’re very proud of the successes that our sponsors and exhibitors realized at the first annual Sustainable Manufacturer Conference & Exhibits. The event provided opportunities for real handshakes with prospective customers.

Partnering with us increases your access to thousands of manufacturers—small, medium, large, and FORTUNE 500®-large—from a diverse range of industries. They include metal fabricators, food and chemical processors, computers and electronic product makers, plastics and rubber products manufacturers, furniture-makers, and machinery and appliance manufacturers. Our audience is your target market, including 230 manufacturers on the FORTUNE 500 list at more than 2,700 locations such as 3M, Boeing, Caterpillar, DuPont, GM, General Electric, Honeywell International, Intel Corp., Kraft, Proctor & Gamble, and Whirlpool.

You can be assured that your message reaches the following manufacturing decision-makers: president/vice president (49%), owner (18%), production and plant operations management (12%), engineering (8%), and other titles, such as sustainability director.

We hope you will join us in 2016 as we continue our efforts to educate and connect ecosavvy manufacturers.

My best regards,

Editor Kate Bachman has been covering manufacturing and sustainability for over a decade. She has met with thousands of manufacturers and visited hundreds of plants, learning best sustainable strategies and culling them to relay to her readers.

By becoming a member, you’ll have access to eco-minded manufacturers keen to buy your green and sustainable products and services. SMN members save on a host of benefits, including advertising. Membership is affordable, too, at $150. Join today at sustainablemfr.com/membership or by calling 888-394-4362.

YOUR GUIDE FOR PUTTING SUSTAINABILITY TO WORK INYOUR PLANT AND OPERATIONS

Submeteringhelps heattreatment planttrack energyand waterconsumption

Monitoring takes the heat out of resource costs As one of the largest metal heat treatment plants on the West Coast,Byington Steel Treating, Inc.’s operations range from heat treating,

hardening, and degreasing to stress loading, failure testing, and freezing –all of which are energy-intensive processes. Giant furnaces, cryogenicfreezers, straightening presses, and degreasing machinery at the plantoperate for hours at a time during multiple shifts, consuming vast quantitiesof electricity, gas, and water.

The energy and water consumption costs must be charged to individualclients' products. Too, plant managers needed a way to identify inefficientprocesses and potential machinery failures. However, measuring andmanaging individual production costs using master metering, in which asingle meter tracks all gas usage, another tracks all electricity use, and athird tracks all water use, was nearly impossible.

Byington Steel Treating CEO Kathryn Byington and her staff installedsubmetering and monitoring systems to isolate energy and water usageaccurately and in real time. (Read more.)

Out-of-the-boxsustainablepackagingoptions formanufacturers

Lighter, tighter, biobased, biodegradable, recycled Packaging manufacturers are under increasing environmental pressure toreduce both the amount of material used in packaging and what is headedfor the landfill. In some countries and states, that pressure is beingamplified by extended producer responsibility legislation, which makespackaging producers and users responsible for end-of-life costs.

Luckily for manufacturers, their options for meeting these packagingchallenges are increasing. Read about several companies that have light-weighted and downsized; increased waste material recovery and recycledcontent; incorporated biodegradable and recyclable plant-based polymersin their packaging; and explored ecofriendly adhesives and coatings.

Have a great sustainability story? Topic? There’s still time to share it

The Sustainable Manufacturer Network Advisory Board

6 Ways to “Be the change” "Be the change that you wish to see in the world." This magnificent advice iscommonly attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, though some dispute that Gandhi was itssource. Skeptics speculate that the quote may have morphed from longer prosestatements that the great peacemaker made or that the aphorism is a compilation ofstatements by several people. No matter. Though I’m usually a stickler for accuracyin quoting, in this case, I’m thoroughly willing to concede that the quote may be aconglomeration and that Gandhi very likely embraced the sentiment, even if he didn’tsay it.

What is critical at this point in time, when our environmental standard of living isthreatened, is that sustainable manufacturers stand together to grow a culture ofsustainability, renewability, and eco-responsibility.

How? If you have not already: 1. Join our Sustainable Manufacturer Network.2. Participate in our conference, workshops, and webinars.3. Compose a corporate sustainability plan. Here are some great examples.
