Case Study: Jamil RafiqIn 2013 Jamil enrolled on entry 3 Functional Skills English and Maths classes with Lifelong Learning. At that time he lacked self-confidence and wanted a career change. He decided to ‘test the water’ and has never looked back. Jamil discovered that he enjoyed learning, was successful in his studies, and with the encouragement of his classmates and teachers was motivated to carry on. He has since achieved Level 2 in Maths and English, studied for Maths GCSE this year and has started to study English Language GCSE.“My life has changed for the better. Before joining these courses, I didn’t have confidence to speak to anyone in authority but now I deliver my opinions and ideas clearly. I do this in discussions, interviews and presentations. I’m a role model for friends and family and my children and I’m looking forward to moving into higher education and changing my career. I feel very loyal towards Oldham Lifelong Learning and have enjoyed the changes that they’ve guided and supported me through over the past four years. I would recommend Lifelong Learning to others because of the support I’ve had from teachers who are patient and are willing to go over topics again and again until they are understood. I’m part of a group of very diverse, friendly people where I’ve made new friends and everyone respects each other.”

Case study: Peter SmethurstPeter decided to try a new practical skill so he signed up to a wood carving course and has been with Lifelong Learning ever since. With the support of his fellow learners and tutor he has gone on to learn many techniques and woodcarving skills. He confidently uses a variety of specialist tools to carve beautiful sculptures. Such is his knowledge, Peter now acts as a mentor to new and less experienced learners in the classroom. Peter said he didn’t have the chance to do practical subjects at school. He has used his skills and knowledge on projects completed at home. This has given him tremendous satisfaction. People have seen his work and asked where he learnt woodcarving and he has told them about the excellent provision for adults at Lifelong Learning.

Case study: Philip DayFollowing a bad car accident, it was suggested by a health specialist that art as a form of therapy might aid Philip’s recovery by getting him out of the house and meeting people. He therefore enrolled on a Drawing and Painting course at Shaw Centre. Since becoming the main carer for his mother, the class has given him a few hours a week when he can re-engage with life outside of his caring duties. At first Philip was quite hesitant, having limited skills, but thanks to the encouragement shown by his tutor, together with the camaraderie of fellow learners he was encouraged to continue and find his own style by experimenting with a variety of techniques. Thanks to his new found confidence Philip regularly presents on subjects, such as art history, and recently took part in an exhibition – Peace, love and cake – in Royton.“Don’t be afraid of having a go! Your efforts will be rewarded by positive encouragements by your fellow

learners. I hated art at school and felt I could never draw or paint anything I would be proud of. But this course has given me confidence to say ‘I’m really happy with this effort – so much so, I show them off to my friends’.”

Case study: Samina MasoodMother-of-three Samina gave up a career to raise her children but never lost her passion for creativity. She completed a cake-decorating course many years ago. To help build her confidence and reduce her stress she decided to learn flower arranging. She has used her newly acquired skills to make gifts for family and friends and now hopes to run her own business.“This course has given me the confidence to move forward, to bring my creativity to life and enable me to look at returning to work. I worked as a psychological wellbeing practitioner for the NHS but have decided on a slight career change. I want to work with young people and adults with mental health issues, and use some of my creative skills to help others with their wellbeing. I also hope to pursue my skills so that I can sell floral arrangements. With that in mind, I have enrolled on another lifelong learning course - in creative craft. This was my first involvement with lifelong learning and I have enjoyed every moment. You will have lots of fun, learn new skills, meet new friends and improve your wellbeing and confidence. It has been a good experience and left me with many memories to cherish.”

Case study: Mehnaz AzamAfter being out of education for 18 years Mehnaz decided to go to Oldham Lifelong Learning because she wanted to work with children and needed the relevant qualifications. The first course she did was ‘Introduction to working in an early years setting’. She then enrolled on the Level 2 Certificate in supporting teaching and learning in schools. As a volunteer in primary schools she was working with children with additional needs but felt she did not have the knowledge to fully support them so she enrolled in a short course to gain these skills. She has completed the ‘Principles of working with individuals with learning disabilities’, which she feels will give her the confidence and relevant skill set to work with anyone with additional needs. Other courses she has completed include ‘Developing knowledge of phonics’, ‘Working with looked after children’ and ‘Mental Health awareness Level 1’.“Coming to Lifelong Learning has changed my life and as dramatic and clichéd as that may sound, it is the truth. I now have no apprehension about speaking to people I do not know. I have feelings of self-worth, confidence and self belief which I did not have before I started the courses. I have met many people and have made great friends. I have a love for learning and hope to continue learning new things.”

Case study: Raheela JanHelping and supporting individuals with learning disabilities was one of the main reasons Raheela signed up to courses with Lifelong Learning. She started off two years ago by completing Level One and Two in English and maths and then moving onto Mental Health Awareness courses to build up her educational portfolio. Raheela has also taken Level 2 in Managing Behaviour that challenges – and even fits in time to study baking for enjoyment and to develop her skills at home.“When I first started I was a bit nervous and shy about going back into study after many years and this was one of the reasons I hadn’t previously enrolled at a college. Since starting I have become more confident and motivated and I have a focus to achieve something for myself. The staff are amazing - my teacher is always encouraging me- and this motivates me even more. Brilliant setting, lovely and friendly, everyone feels welcome. I would definitely recommend the courses and services to all I know. It’s an easy and flexible way of getting back into studies with a variety of centres and timings.”

Case Study: James PaytonAfter overcoming a brain operation that saw him lose 92 per cent of his eyesight, James decided just sitting back in his armchair was not for him. He enrolled onto a range of cookery courses and has been with us ever since. A support worker is always on hand in the class to give assistance, if needed, and the well equipped kitchen at our Turf Lane Centre means he can participate in aspects of cookery independently, which he appreciates. Jim has now completed the Pennywise cookery class and has learnt many new skills which he can transfer to other recipes and use at home. “My sons can’t believe that Dad can make bread. The tutor is really good – as well as buying mince from a supermarket, he says try going to the butcher to get cheaper cuts of meat minced – I think it tastes better too. I wouldn’t have been confident to do that before. The courses are a really good starting point for anyone that would like to become a better cook at home. I love the social aspect of coming to weekly classes and feel privileged to have met such lovely people.”

Case study: Benjamin Crossfield-WoodsBenjamin decided to sign up for the Award in Education and Training Level 3 after completing a range of distance learning courses. He also wanted to complement his Teach English as a Foreign Language qualification - with the aim of then looking to apply to tutor adults in ESOL. He also wanted to gain further knowledge and understanding of the role of a teacher/trainer, their experience teaching a group of learners and what the role entails. “I had a very positive learning experience in the class, as most of my prior learning had been through distance learning, with minimal interaction with other students. So when I could interact with other learners, gaining their perspectives, it gave a broader view with regards to teaching in a classroom environment and ideas on what I could use in the teaching environment. The course has helped me immensely, it has built my confidence with regards to being able to present in front of a group of people with confidence, professionalism and a calm presence, which in turn has helped me at work as I now present weekly within my job role. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to teach or train adults or anyone who is in a role where they need to present frequently to a group of adults.”

Case study: Mousumi PaulMousumi has been on a four-year learning journey and admits that when she first signed up for ESOL E1 she ‘didn’t know a lot of things’ but thanks to study, hard work, listening and the guidance of tutors things have got better. Mousumi first signed up for classes because she wanted to improve her English and speak confidently. She also wanted to help her children with their school work, especially her daughter who is a talented artist, so she can find out about different opportunities to help her. The centre staff have also been able to help with this.“Before I joined an ESOL class, I was always scared and nervous when I tried to speak English with somebody else. Also, my reading and writing were a little bit poor. Now, after 4 years, I can confidently speak English with another person and my reading and writing are better than before. Her tutor David Bailey said: “Mousumi succeeds because she listens. She follows instructions exactly and she is never afraid to challenge, and to ask the tutor if things are not clear. She has the talent to succeed together with a strong work ethic.”

Case study: Tazeem NazirJust over two years ago Tazeem joined a Family Learning class to help improve her spoken English so she could use it in every day conversations. Prior to this she had received very little formal education since going to primary school in Pakistan. At first Tazeem was very shy about speaking in class and would reluctantly answer questions. Two years on there is a noticeable difference. Tazeem has progressed on to further Family Learning classes and is keen to answer questions in class - in fact she likes to answer first if possible. She is far more confident in her body language and it is evident that she is enjoying learning. “The courses have given me the confidence to volunteer to help with my child’s school trip to Gallery Oldham and to take part in various art activities. I’ve used my English to ask for items in the supermarket.”

Case study: Sharon RoddenSharon started studying with us eight years ago when she completed a first aid course for people working with or caring for children. Since then she has gone on to finish classes and gained qualifications in Adult literacy and numeracy. In 2016 she completed the Certificate in Occupational Studies Business Administration. The most recent course she has started is ITQ1 and while she does this Sharon is also doing some voluntary work with Lifelong Learning in a business administration capacity. Her relevant qualifications and skills in Occupational Studies and ITQ1 will hopefully help Sharon gain a business administration role in a school – something her commitment and enthusiasm, which she shows in and out of class, deserves. “My confidence has grown this year and the courses will help me move forward with my career. I will be able to apply for jobs because I have the relevant qualifications and the confidence now to do this. My voluntary work has helped me to transfer what I learnt on the Occupational Studies class to real life situations, which has given things more meaning and clarity. The courses I’ve completed have helped me develop my skills and choose the right career path.”

Case Study: David HayesBudding fitness trainer David first enrolled on a course with us in July 2013 when he did a course with Groundwork and the Community works team. Two years later he completed the Pathway to progress course and has since updated his English and reading skills. He completed a First Award computer class last year and has now progressed onto an ITQ1 course, where he is learning how to use Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and would also like to learn how to use spreadsheets. Earlier this year he completed a Healthy Eating Workshop. David is studying to improve his self-confidence and knowledge as he would like to set up his own business as a personal trainer. In his current class he has already completed

units that will help with any ‘paperwork’. The English and reading skills classes are helping David in talking to clients and he has been doing some voluntary mentoring with Oldham Probation Service – making a difference to other people’s lives. David has also been supporting people who have been in jail and who are on a ‘Through the gate programme’, helping them find housing and training opportunities. “Lifelong Learning has motivated me to succeed and has helped me on my learning journey. Languages

Enjoy learning the language and culture of another country in friendly, stimulating classes.

Learning a new language is an enjoyable and rewarding experience, but it needs time and a significant amount of motivation and effort on your part. You will need to do homework – it’s essential! Language learning is not a “quick-fix” process. You will gradually develop confidence and skills. You need patience and determination to make progress.

For beginners. You have no previous knowledge, although you may just know “hello/goodbye/thank you”. You will learn enough spoken and written language for everyday routine situations.

You are probably able to do the following in the present tense:• Ask for food and drink

in a bar • Ask for a room

• Talk simply about yourself and your family

• Deal with simple shopping

• Ask for and understand simple directions

• Tell the time and date

You are probably already able to, with more confidence:

• Say what you did last week or on your last holiday

• Say what you are going to do next weekend

• Make arrangements for travel, restaurant and accommodation bookings

• Make arrangements face to face or on the phone

• Speak about a limited range of routine topics

You are probably able to talk with some confidence:

• About routine subjects like family, shopping, travel, work, leisure etc.

• To give opinions about them using some past and future tenses with some understanding of grammar

• Respond quickly to unpredictable situations

You want to be able to “get by” in the language, with some confidence. You will need to do one or two hours per week learning at home.

You would like to develop your speaking and writing skills in a wider range of situations. You want to increase your confidence. You will need to do 2+ hours per week learning at home.

You would like to be able to express opinions and give reasons and cope with increasingly unpredictable situations in the language. You want to build your confidence. You will need to do 2-3 hours per week learning at home.

You would like to further develop your skills and to build your confidence. You will need to do some extra hours learning at home each week.

You should choose an “Introduction to” language class.

You should choose a Year 2 language class.

You should choose a Year 3 language class.

You should choose one of the conversation courses.

We offer a range of courses and levels to suit your needs. Our beginners’ courses are divided into two 13 week terms over one year. Case study: Edward BradleyEdward’s story started around two years ago when his brother asked him to be his best man. The catch was his brother was getting married to a Spanish lady - in her home town - where hardly any English is spoken. Edward decided to learn the language so that he could speak to her friends and family and also other people in the village, not to mention saying parts of his speech in Spanish. That was the easy bit. The more daunting part of it all was having to look after 30 non Spanish speaking people (English wedding guests) and keeping them happy during his stay in Spain. After his first year learning Spanish with Lifelong Learning he had learnt enough to have brief conversations with people - and more importantly to be able to order food and drinks at the restaurants and bars. With the help of his tutor, Edward gained enough capability and confidence to present his speech in Spanish which left him feeling amazing.“I decided to carry on into my second year of Spanish because I like Spain as a country. This year there has been a lot more to learn. It has been relevant for what you need to know, whilst at the same time staying

enjoyable. The course this year has helped to build my confidence and develop what I learnt last year. I would recommend this course to anyone who has an interest in visiting Spain for a holiday or moving there - not to mention the social benefits from the course. You are in class with other people, who give each other support, as they have the same interest in learning or wanting to improve skills in a relaxed and safe environment. ¡Buena suerte! Good luck!

• Take a notepad and pen with you that you always use just for your class. Jot down all of your notes in it throughout your course and then everything will be kept in one place.

• Don’t invest in anything else before your first class, unless you are attending an arts and crafts or cookery class and have been advised to bring your own items (such as your own cloths for cookery).

• You might need to set additional time aside for working at home. Your tutor will tell you during induction of approximate time requirements, to enable you to organise your additional study time. For example, you may be given homework. You might also want to work on a project in your own time in addition to the time you spend in your class.
