Old World New is truly a passion project; my "baby," if you will. The mission is simple: "reuse, sustain, make old newagain." Sustainability and reuse are the methods I practice to try to live a wholesome, minimally impactful life on this

earth. With Old World New, I hope to share my approach and influence others to become more conscious of how theiractions affect the earth, and to want to make a change. Fashion and design are another way I express myself, so my love

for styling second-hand clothes came naturally. I believe that wearing used clothes, better known as "thrift store finds," isan opportunity to decrease how we hurt the earth. The fashion industry is one of the main causes of pollution and unfairworkshop treatment, creating health risks in both situations due to the amount of hazardous materials used to produce

them, and the danger and lack of care given to workers in countries without strict labor laws. Let's work together to change that, one beautiful outfit at a time.

2015 saw the start of the "CulturalAppredciation" series for Old World New. Ineach installment of the series, culturalappreciation was approached from a fashionstand point. This is one of the many outfitsthat made the cut. It is handmade, unlikethe others that were thrifted. Of course, having an Old World New outfit with nospecial thrift find is unheard of, so I mustpoint out the rad 90s heels thatcomplete this ensemble.

"Diversity is the spice oflife. I love pulling influencefrom different cultures. Theeasy access to knowledge ofdifferent peoples’ heritageshas helped shaped me to bewho I am today. Therefore, Ipractice love, not hate. AtOld World New, we practicecultural appreciation, notcultural appropriation.Learn about and haverespect for the cultures thatyou seek to emulate – you’llbe happy that you openedyour mind to “a whole newworld” (I hope you sang thatin your Jasmine & Aladdinvoice, because I did!)."

For a grand total of $20, this streetchic outift was created head totoe over the span of a few monthsof thrift shopping (excludingunmentionables). A little patienceand regular thrifting can go a longway.

Outfit details:Shirt: a regular t-shirt with one ofmy favorite artist on it. $3 at a thriftstore in Memphis, TN. I searchedonline for cut-up t-shirt inspiration, and changed it to be breezy andcomfortable.Pants: $8 at a DFW thrift store. Idistressed them and made the legsmore fitted because they had a

wide flare at the bottom and thencuffed the bottom hem.Shoes: I do, however, run acrossnew and like new shoes from time totime. I found these vintage inspiredwing tip heels for $8 at a differentDFW thrift store.Purse: This Alba purse that lookslike it is made to favor a Dooney &Bourke bag was $1 at a garage sale.

Curated vintage shops are so different from thriftstores, but both stores hold one thing in common:they never fail to sell beautiful items. Thiscrocheted dress was found at a Texas vintage shop, and it seems to be handmade. The undergarmentsworn with it were made by Reformation, a companythat uses deadstock fabric to create unique clothing. Their clothes are conceptualized, designed, created, marketed and shipped out of one building inAmerica. This ensemble is the perfect mixture ofold and new, in a way that is both beautiful anddelicate on the earth.

Worn for the 2015 Fashion Revolution celebrationof "Who Made My Clothes?", this second-hand andeco-friendly combo proves that current day fashioncan be less harmful on the earth than it has been inthe past, while being absolutely beautiful.

"This ensemble is the perfectmixture of old and new, in away that is both beautiful anddelicate on the earth."

"I love any thrift store that is small, jam packed and kinda smelly. Those are usually where thetrue gems are hiding! I typically stay away from chain thrift stores as the inventory is usuallymore run of the mill or priced higher than I want to pay. "~ Sydney of Chic Stripes by Sydney Page Lester

"My favorite thrifted item would have to be my Burberry blazer. I could not believe that Ifound that blazer mixed in with the other blazers for wait for it… $1.99. You should have seenthe look on my face when I saw it. I was like a dog with a bone. I kept looking around at all theother shoppers to make sure no one else saw it and then I buried it under the other clothingitems in my cart until I checked out." ~ Brittany C. of Creativity Arise

"One woman’s old clothes is a thriftanista’s treasure."~ Troy of Thriftanista in the City

"My Advice to anyone who wants to thrift or wants to jump into the thrift scene, I would tellthem to be patient. Every day will not be a good day… But oh! When your day comes to hit itbig at the thrift, one will experience what I like to call “feeling like a Real OG”."~ Lawrence of The Vintage Vandalism

"The beauty of thrifting is that you never know what you will find, and some pieces may beout of your comfort zone or something you wouldn’t think of wearing at first, but great thriftfinds like fun vintage pieces give you the chance to challenge your style, think outside the box, create a new look for yourself, and maybe even gain more self confidence knowing that morethan likely, that one piece is unique, and no one else will be wearing anything like it. It willmake you stand out amongst others."~ Brittany P. of Vinty Fresh

"Fashion should be fun and so should thrifting. Remember, you’re not going to a mall store;everything will not be laid out for you. Try not to get intimidated. Have fun and treat it like abig ole’ scavenger hunt. "~ Dionne of Dionne Dean

Bellacures is a revolutionary nailsalon that shatters yourstereotypical idea of a nail shop andreplaces it with an experience thatcaters to & pampers you in everyaspect. You can sit back in plush, relaxing chairs instead of aconference table style chair whereyou have to huddle over the table toallow the manicurist access to yournails. Instead of the pedicure chairs,a clean tub of water is brought to youfor your feet to soak for yourpedicure. This set up makes it easyto get your mani & pedi done at thesame time! I’m happy to have visited

this shop for their grand openingwhere I experienced the uniquelayout for the first time. It was alsothere that I learned about the allnatural mani & pedi – and I havefallen in love with them.

Bellacures already uses a lot ofproducts that are more organicallyderived than other shops. The allnatural mani & pedi strives to makeevery aspect organic and aschemical-free as possible. The nailpolish remover by Karma Naturalshas Soybean Oil and Lavendar, anddoesn’t leave your nails and finger

tips dry like normal acetone. Organic lotions are used for themassage portion of the mani & pedi.

Deborah Lippmann identifies theirpolish as “5 Free.” This means “noToluene, Formaldehyde,Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor orDBP (Dibutyl Phthalate). No animaltesting.” Their website defines it as“luxury treatment-enriched nailpolish with Biotin, Green TeaExtract.”

OPI is 3 free, making it still a littlemore green than most polishes.

I always leave Bellacures feelingrefreshed instead of doused in thescent of acrylic powder (y’all knowthat nail shop smell that I’m talkingabout). The Deborah Lippmanncolor lasts two weeks when you takecare of your nails, and it looks andfeels like a normal polish. There’s nogreat sacrifice that has to made tolive a little more green, darlings.
