OPEN DAY GREAT SUCCESS.

On Saturday 15th November the Wedderburn Coach House and Gallery volunteers held an Open

Day to encourage locals and visitors to our area to explore what the facility has to offer. The event

was held from 10am until 3pm with

about 165 visitors looking through the

Museum and the current Photographic

exhibition in the Gallery. The organisers

provided free tea and coffee also Herbs,

Pot Puree, Seeds and a selection of

Vegetables grown locally all donated for

the day.

Several volunteers dressed in costume

for the event and mingled with the

visitors. It was lovely to see the locals

and some travellers learning more

about the Wedderburn area and sup-

porting the Gallery which was opened

just over six years ago after the site was

closed as a cafe.

There were stalls which further added to the flavour of the day with the Lions Club serving BBQ,

Care Group selling their crafts and a number of others with

both a craft and antique variety suited to the venue and

occasion. The Gallery exhibits and sells locally made craft

items all year round and is a good place to seek out that

special one off item.

Throughout the district we have many gifted craftspeople

and the gallery are interested to hear from any artisans

who would like to have an exhibition.

The community are encouraged to view the works which

are changed monthly in the Gallery. The museum and gal-

lery are refreshed and kept clean and tidy again by the

dedicated team of volunteers, so please support the effort

to keep this important local tourism venue viable.

In the Spotlight : Senior Constable Joy Jenkins.

Many of you would recognize Joy from her previous life as our local hairdresser. She had her business at the old Wedderburn hospital, before the Hargreaves took it over. In fact before joining the police force Joy’s life had been hairdressing.

Born in the country, Joy moved to Melbourne to study hairdressing as a teenager. Some years later, wanting to bring her children up in the country Joy moved to Charlton, that was 20 + years ago (who’s counting).

Joy has always wanted to be a police woman and when she discovered there were no age limits, she made the move. She was stationed for 2 years at Swan Hill after finishing at the academy and as of the start of November is now part of the Wedderburn community.

Having a female officer at our local station will be a great addition as it brings a woman’s perspective to policing and assists those who prefer to talking to a female officer. That doesn’t mean she is a softy. Protocols still have to be followed, it’s just good to have a different perspective.

Wedderburn is a 16 hour manned station, but as the 3 officers have such a large area to cover they are not always at the station. Out front of the station is a 24hour intercom system that goes straight through to Maryborough, who then contact officers in the field.

Joy encourages people to report things in the area that seem suspicious and if you don’t feel comfortable talking to local police, there is always Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

And don’t forget to give Joy a good ol’ Wedderburn welcome when you see her next.

MOTHERS CLUB CONCERT IN IT’S 59th YEAR.

The 59th Mothers Club concert was yet again an extravaganza of fun, with 22 mothers of students at Wedderburn Col-

lege dancing, singing and performing the funniest of comedy skits.

The Mothers Club concert is an enormous undertaking with only weeks to develop a plan, choreograph acts, learn

songs and dances, organise audio equipment, costumes and the actual hall for the night. But Alex Holt seems to do it

all in her stride. Fortunately she does get some help from the amazing ladies in the show who choreograph many of

their own numbers and organise many of the costumes, volunteers who set up the hall and do the door and catering on

the night, and many more too numerous top mention.

Breaking the rules of no men, Thomas Jackson was the sound engi-

neer for the show, which caused much hilarity. New to the team this

year was also college teachers Hilary MacKay and Fiona Hall, with new

mums being Monique Ward and Linda Younghusband. All new mem-

bers did an outstanding job and seemed natural to the stage.

Annette McNamara and Marie Marsh have the option of finishing with

the concerts this year as their children end their time at Wedderburn

College, but I suspect just like their follow performer Karen Fazzani the

show has gotten under their skin and they’ll be back again next year.

The show this year had a very local flavour following the history of

Wedderburn and the founding families. It’s hard to imagine they can

improve on this years, but somehow they always do.

This summer we are expecting above average temperatures which will result in more hot,

dry, windy days than usual. Bush and grass will be very dry and fires will start more easily and burn faster and with more in-

tensity. Talk to your family and friends about the fire risk where you live and make plans for what you’ll do on a hot, dry, windy day

Neville White (Deputy Group Officer) and Bob Meyer

(Deputy Group Officer), Wedderburn Fire Brigade

Neville White:

I joined in 1966 as a Junior.

I’ve held various positions in-

cluding Captain and Group

Officer. I volunteer to help the

community and to look after

everyone else’s property. And

the funny thing is, I’ve never

been to a running fire! It’s be-

cause I’m out of town and usu-

ally I’m controlling the fire from

my vehicle as Captain or DGO,

communicating with the guys

on the trucks. I’m really glad to

see Bob come along. To see

him come in with his crew lead-

er and FEM experience has

really got us going.

Bob Meyer:

I enjoy the brigade and like that if you’re not sure of something, someone like Neville is always willing to help. I do the maintenance of FEM for businesses, schools etc as they have to have their extinguishers main-tained twice a year. It’s a good fundraiser for the bri-gade and you’re talking to people all the time, also you get to see inside buildings for fire safety. Like most peo-ple in the brigade I do it be-cause I like helping people, helping the community.

A FLUTTER AT THE WEDDERBURN CFA CHRISTMAS PARTY.

The Wedderburn CFA decided to get in early with their Christmas

celebrations this year before the fire season heats up. They were so

early that the party goers were able to have a draw for the Melbourne

Cup on the same day. Winner and third place getter were Luke Selby

and his partner Kylie Jones, who we all agreed should be shouting the

rest of us a round.

The ladies prepared a lovely meal of chicken and salads, while Bob

Meyer wowed us all again with one of his delicious desserts. The idea

of having the Xmas celebration was

not a silly one, as they have already

had 6 call outs in the past few weeks and expect a lot more over the

summer. The sudden downpour at the end of November was a

welcomed relief for CFA members.

The folks from the Wedderburn CFA will be hoping to see you all at

the Emergency Services day, Tuesday 16th December at the

Community House, where you can learn more about what they do

and the equipment used. Let’s show our support!

Anne, Greg & Steve enjoy catching up.

Kylie and Luke cleaned up with the Cup.

YOUR BEST FRIEND NEEDS YOU IN THE SUMMER MONTHS.

Every year we hear stories about animals dying from

careless decisions by their owners. One of the most

common is animals locked in hot cars. Often we

think if we leave the windows open a little, or park

with most the car in the shade, old faithful Rover or

Boof will be fine waiting in the car. We had a experi-

ence recently of that exact situation, where the car

was bogged in sand, so the dog was left with the

windows partially open while the owner tried to solve

his dilemma.

At no time during the warmer seasons (which seems

to be most of the year now!), do you leave your

beloved animals inside the car. They need to be

inside a house, or tied to a tree with plenty of shade and a bowl of water.

Let’s show a bit of love back to our most loyal of friends.

The best $100 you have spent in years.

HISTORY OF THE COMMUNITY HOUSE REMEMBERED.

The Wedderburn Community Centre had its official opening last weekend, with Minister Peter Walsh conducting the proceedings.

Minister Walsh opened the $1.75 million project, which will boost the region, and provide an area for residents to access services and participate in community groups.

This centre will stand the test of time, and provides the commu-nity with a brand new facility.

The Victorian Government provided $400,000 through the Re-gional Growth Fund, the Commonwealth Government supported the project with $851,450, Loddon Shire Council was proud to

invest $300,000 with a further $200,000 coming from Ingle-wood and Districts Health Service and Wedderburn Commu-nity House.

As the Loddon Shire Mayor, Gavan Holt said “I am very proud of what the region has been able to achieve with the generous support of state and federal governments”. Mayor Gavin Holt went on to thank the many people who have supported and worked at the centre both past and present. A special mention was make of three very special guests in the crowd. Barbara Beauliev, Josie Williams and Dottie Hicks are all life members of the Community House with their many years of volunteering recognised.

In amongst the crowd were many people who had attend-ed the centre as Wedderburn Primary School and enjoyed reminiscing about old times. Two of those was previous school principal Keith Ring and his wife June.

The new development includes onsite parking, a new tourism office, two interview rooms for visiting services, two improved multi-purpose rooms, two meeting rooms and consulting rooms for the Inglewood and Districts Health Service.

Wedderburn Community House, Loddon Tourism, Cen-trelink, VicRoads, Skills Plus employment, Inglewood and Districts Health Service and a wide range of community groups operate from the centre.

Come in and discover what the new centre has for you and your family. You might be surprised by the range of services on offer.

Above; Wendy & Lance Ward reminisce with Keith & June Ring.

BERRIMAL CELEBRATE NEW FIRE SHED.

On Sunday the 9th November the Berrimal Rural Fire Brigade had its Official Station Opening and

Service Award Ceremony.

The CFA Operations Officer Bryan Suckling commenced the proceeding and the plaque was un-

veiled by David O’Brien, MLC with Berrimal Captain Wes Polkinghorne. CFA’s

Assistant Chief Officer, Mike Wassing assisted with the awards and metal presentations with forty

members receiving recognition in the brigade.

The Berrimal Station has a community

complex, with multiple community activities

and organisations in the pipe line to keep

the Berrimal community spirit alive and

reassuring a positive future for the district.

The day was a real country affair with over

150 people coming together to celebrate.

For many of the families in Berrimal there

were three generations represented,

showing the strength of this small rural

community.

The shed was considered a necessity by the community as they don’t have their own hall, or any

communal meeting place. The large facility has multiple rooms for meetings and social events.

Already there are table tennis tables set up with a lively competition going on between local

children. This seems the perfect place to strengthen this small communities ties and hopefully new

locals to the area to join the Berrimal CFA..

GUESS WHO? I am 9 years old.

My favourite things to do is ride bikes, dirt bikes and push bikes. I’m pretty good on both and love doing jumps on my bicycle with my mate

Dillon after school .

The other thing I love is computer games. My favourite two games are

Motocross Nitro and Offroad V4.

My family and I moved to Wedderburn last year and we all love it. The town is full of nice people, and I have the bush right behind my house to

ride my bike in and play in.

We have lots of animals including 2 dogs, Biff & Shaz, a goat called Millie, a sheep called Martha, chickens and two pigs called Princess and Bentley. I help Mum feed them every night, with scraps we collect from

the supermarket. They love it.

I love eating fish & chips and chocolate, perhaps not together, then

again why not?

I joined the Wedderburn hockey team last season and I think I’m playing

pretty well. Except for the time I got my foot stuck in the net and fell over.

My parents are Deedee and Deisel Williams and my name is

NATHAN PHILLIP CROW-WILLIAMS.

With Annette Robertson. Beyond the Backyard.

It’s Malleefowl monitoring time!

Have you ever taken time to study the informative sign (see the photo below) located at the rest area adjacent to Jacka

Park? It gives an excellent description of the annual cycle of activity relevant to this endangered bird some of which still

exist in our area. For a variety of reasons their once plentiful numbers have been reduced to rare and occasional sightings.

Unfortunately they may be sighted on the road and become road kill. The Wedderburn Conservation Management Network

worked with Loddon Shire to have these important warning signs erected to alert motorists to be cautious in areas where

Malleefowl have been seen.

At this time of year volunteer members of the Victorian Malleefowl Recovery Group carry out data collection and monitoring

of more than 60 known mounds in the Wychitella Nature Conservation Reserve and on private property. Extremely few of

these mounds indicate any sign of recent bird activity. The data is entered onto the National Malleefowl data base.

If you would like to learn more about Malleefowl visit www.malleefowlvictoria.org.au. If you have recent sightings or infor-

Ephemeral Soaks Field Day by WCMN Observer, Kate

Following the floods of January 2011, you may have seen green and persistently boggy patches of ground around the bases of local granite hills.

Last Sunday 16th November , botanist Paul Fore-

man took us on a tour of some of these groundwater dependent wetlands, known as ephemeral soaks, near Mounts Kooyoora and Korong.

Paul described how soaks are populated by unique-ly adapted plant species such as Golden spray, Swamp Goodenia and Slender Aphelia. We saw Blakely’s Redgum and Prickly Teatree. which, when seen out of their normal range, can be a telltale sign of an ephemeral wetland.

In the dry years, the soaks may appear relatively clear of understorey, as plants lie dormant. When the rains come, large fissures in the granite hills fill

with an enormous amount of water, which, over the ensuing months, seeps out into the soaks caus-ing many dormant plants to flourish, transforming the areas into brilliant green, lush wetlands, some-times persisting for a year or more while the moisture lasts.

As we stood on a dry, rather barren patch of ground on private property near Mt Korong, Paul sur-prised us with a photo of the same site taken in 2011, revealing its alter-ego as an enchanting, vi-brantly green wetland.

The field day was coordinated by North Cen-tral Catchment Management Authority and Wedderburn CMN as part of the ongoing Kooyoora Connections project. Paul Fore-man is conducting an extensive survey of lo-cal ephemeral soaks, which he says have been largely overlooked in the North west goldfields, with a view to developing strate-gies for their ongoing health and protection.

If you live near the granite hills and have an ephemeral soak on your property that you’d like Paul to look at, you can email him: [email protected]

HARD WORK FOR THE COMMUNITIES BENEFIT.

Robbie Collins and his team of dedicated volunteers do a magnificent job in the garden here at the Com-munity House. Over the past 12 months several of these keen workers have contributed to lots of vegies and pot plants for sale here at the House. They have learnt propagation techniques, pruning and general garden maintenance whilst working in the garden with their mentor and supervisor Robbie Collins. Robbie

plays an integral part in organising and working with these young people and if he wasn’t there then these people would not get the opportunities he has provided for them.

They not only maintain the vegie garden and orchard for the Community House but are also responsible for the watering and mowing the lawns for the Community Centre. Now that the new build is complete they can get down and dirty and continue planting out at the front of the building giving the place an inviting entrance and a somewhere pleasant to sit and relax. In time they will have trans-formed this site into something they can be justly proud of as we are of them.

The team consists of Belinda baker, Michael Hayes, Alysha Welsh, Jamie Harke, Chris Woodward, James Cook and Bill Heffernan.

REAL BEAUTY FROM RECYCLING. Going through my photo files I came across this picture that was taken at the Community House some months ago and thought it

deserved a late mention. Members of the Men’s Shed arrived with this beautiful wooden table which now holds pride of place in

the Reception area of the Community

House.

During the Houses renovations the

original front desk was removed and

luckily snaffled by the Mens Shed,

who have recycled the timber top and

produced this lovely coffee table. “It’s

nice to still have a part of the old

reception area with us”, said Jude

Raftis Centre Co-ordinator, “and won-

derful to see what beautiful things can

come from recycling”.

So next time you’re in the Community

House waiting for Inglewood District

Health Services, or waiting for an

appointment with Cheryl from Skills

Plus take a moment to admire the

table now hidden under newspapers.

WCH staff, volunteers and visitors welcome the lads from the Mens Shed & the table.

WEDDERBURN DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE.

By Frank Pfeiffer.

The Wedderburn Development Association Inc. began in 2002. The Association’s main aims are to; foster a spirit of socio-economic wellbeing for the community of Wedderburn; to promote Wedderburn as a great place to work, live and visit; to lobby the three tiers of government for funds to improve the economic sustainability of Wedderburn and district and to raise and expend

funds in the interests of the community of Wedderburn and district.

The Association also acts as the community planning group for Wedderburn. The Loddon Shire Council, around that time com-menced consulting with the community to develop a Community Plan. As it turned out, the Wedderburn residents who assisted in developing the Wedderburn Community Plan also represented the Wedderburn Development Association Inc. The cluster decided to move the community planning task under the umbrella of the Association, as it had already been formally established, and to

save the number of meetings for those involved.

To this day, the Wedderburn Development Association Inc. remains active, meeting monthly, monitoring progress on the 2003/04 Community Plan and providing a continued advocacy role on behalf of the Wedderburn community and the Loddon Shire Council. We are currently in the final stages of producing a new fully updated Community Plan which hopefully will be published by Christ-

mas this year.

As your representative, the Wedderburn Development Association Inc. is pleased to encourage new faces around the table provid-

ing new ideas and participating in our activities in building for tomorrow.
