Journal Reflections and Applications – 40 minutes

Writing journal reflections is an opportunity to experience life change and develop Christian character. Thinking about what you are learning and discussing how to apply it makes learning practical and meaningful. Reflecting on Christian virtues—integrity, honesty, self-control, charity, generosity, diligence, persistence, patience, kindness, compassion, courage, and humility—is a key component of character development.

1 What is God teaching you in this course? Are there things you need to do? Attitudes you need to change? Commands you need to obey? Errors you need to avoid? Examples you need to follow? Leadership principles you need to practice? Promises you need to hold on to? Relationships you need to work on? Requests you need to pray? Resolutions you need to make? Sins you need to confess? Things you need to be grateful for? Truths you need to believe? Lessons you need to share with others concerning times of persecution, struggle, suffering, temptation, or trial?

2 How are you going to apply these concepts to your life, family, and ministry to others?

3 How could we as leaders pass on these lessons to current and future leaders?

Group Activity for Advanced Students – 20 minutes

In small groups, students will illustrate what they have learned this session by creating charts, drawings, graphs, mind maps, role-play, skits, or visuals to develop their long-term memory and relational skills. The group activity is an opportunity for students to display their thinking visually. Displaying thinking brings ideas to life and engages the whole learning team in the creative thinking process. Over 80% of adults are visual and relational learners. This is a key component to creativity, collaboration, cooperation, and team leadership. Students learn better together.

Student Presentations

Contribute to a group or individual presentation on a sermon in one of the textbooks. This group project can be a PowerPoint presentation, dramatic skit, role-play, charts, or drawings (15-20 minutes). This will assist student-leaders in developing the creative/critical thinking and teamwork skills essential to effective teaching and servant-leadership.

The presentations are an opportunity for students to learn to work together. Students benefit from group interaction as they communicate, cooperate, and collaborate. The public speaking component of this assignment along with formative feedback helps students gain experience and confidence. Students learn best in professional learning communities.

Term Paper

Name Date Points /150

Type a 10- to 15-page term paper or booklet titled Applications for Leaders from Job through the Song of Songs based on the textbooks, online articles, course notes, and other sources. Be sure to footnote all the ideas, paraphrases, and direct quotes in your paper, whether from books or the Internet. Text should be double-spaced. Font should be Times New Roman 12. Begin with an introduction and conclude with an application or call for commitment. Include illustrations and charts. This will assist student-leaders in developing the creative/critical thinking and writing skills essential to effective servant-leadership.

Writing is a vital skill in ministry. The term paper is an opportunity for students to enhance their writing skills. The term paper is where students collect the ideas of mentors in books to fully develop and utilize them. Students multiply their ministry as they communicate what they are learning to family, friends, and those they minister to in written form. Writing helps clarify ideas. Studies indicate that students benefit from the opportunity to both write and speak in formal settings. Evaluated writing is a key component of learning, communicating, and leading.

Purpose of Each Poetical Book

Job To demonstrate God’s sovereningty and the meaning of true faith in the midst of

suffering. This book addresses the question, “Why do the righteous suffer?”

Psalms To provide poetry for the expression of praise, worship, and confession to God. This book helps us to mediate on God’s Word and faithfulness.

Proverbs To teach people how to attain wisdom, self-discipline, and a prudent life, and how to do what is right and just and fair—to apply divine wisdom to daily life and to provide moral instruction. This book is about not ruining your life.

Ecclesiastes To spare future generations the bitterness of learning through their experience that life is meaningless apart from God. This book is about not wasting your youth.

Song of Songs To tell of the love between a bridegroom and his bride, to affirm the sanctity of marriage, to warn of marital conflict, and to picture God’s love for his people. This book is about preparing for a great marriage.

Key Themes from the Book of Job

Suffering Suffering can be, but is not always, a penalty for sin. In the same way, prosperity is

not always a reward for being good. Those who love God are not exempt from

trouble. Although we may not be able to understand fully the pain we experience, it

can lead us to rediscover God.

Satan’s Attacks We must learn to recognize but not fear Satan’s attacks because Satan cannot

exceed the limits that God sets. Don’t let any experience drive a wedge between you

and God. Although you can’t control how Satan may attack, you can always choose

how you will respond when it happens.

God’s

Goodness

Although God is present everywhere, at times He may seem far away. This may

cause us to feel alone and to doubt His care for us. We should serve God for who He

is, not what we feel. He is never insensitive to our suffering. Because God is

sufficient, we must hold on to Him.

Prideful

Judgmental

We must be careful not to judge others who are suffering. We may be demonstrating

the sin of arrogant prideful. We must be cautious in maintaining the certainty of our

own conclusions about how God treats us. When we congratulate ourselves for being

right, we become proud.

Trusting Job showed the kind of trust we are to have. When everything is stripped away, we

are to recognize that God is all we ever really had. We should not demand that God

explain everything. God gives us Himself, but not all the details of His plans. We must

remember that this life, with all its pain, is not our final destiny.

The Five Books in the Book of Psalms

Book 1

Psalm 1-41

Adoration

Praise

Like Genesis, this book emphasizes adoration—the writers praise God

for his justice, express confidence in God’s compassion, recount the

depravity of man, plead for vindication, ask God to deliver them from

their enemies, speak of the blessedness of the forgiven sinner, and

portray God as a shepherd.

Book 2

Psalm 42-

72

Deliverance

God’s Power

Like Exodus, this book emphasizes God’s power—there is a prayer for

rescue, a call to worship, a confession of sin, an encouragement to trust

God, a psalm for those hurt by friends, a prayer for those who have

been slandered, and a missionary psalm. These psalms can help us

trust in God’s deliverance and power in difficult times.

Book 3

Psalm 73-

89

Worship

Forgiveness

Like Leviticus, this book emphasizes proper worship; the psalmists

celebrate the sovereignty of God, God’s hand in history, God’s

faithfulness, and God’s covenant with David. These psalms remind us

of our need for forgiveness, humility, and submission in our worship.

Book 4

Psalm 90-

106

Obedience

Thankfulness

Like Numbers, this book emphasizes the need for obedience and

thankfulness—there is a prayer of Moses, a psalm about oppressors,

and a psalm praising God as our King. These psalms can help us

retain a sense of dependence and thankfulness in our worship of the

almighty God.

Book 5

Psalm 107-

150

Reflection

Trust

Like Deuteronomy, this book emphasizes the need for meditation and

trust—there are anthems of thanksgiving for God and his works,

recounting the blessings of righteous living, thanking God for

deliverance, and praising God for His wonderful Word. These psalms

can remind us to hide God’s Word in our hearts that we might not sin

against Him.

Key Themes from the Book of Psalms

Praise Focusing our thoughts on God moves us to praise Him. The more we know Him, the

more we can appreciate what He has done for us as Creator, Savior, and Shepherd.

God’s Power God is all-powerful; and He always acts at the right time. He is sovereign over every

situation. God’s power is shown by the ways He reveals Himself in creation, history,

and His Word.

Forgiveness Because God forgives us, we can pray to Him honestly and directly. When we

receive his forgiveness, we move from alienation to intimacy, from guilt to love.

Thankfulness When we realize how we benefit from knowing God, we can fully express our thanks

to Him. By thanking Him often, we develop spontaneity in our prayer life.

Trust God is faithful and just. When we put our trust in Him, He quiets our hearts. Because

He has been faithful throughout history, we can trust Him in times of trouble.

Key Themes from the Books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs

Themes of Proverbs

Wisdom is

key

God wants His people to be wise. Two kinds of people portray two contrasting paths

of life. The fool is the wicked, stubborn person who hates or ignores God. The wise

person seeks to know and love God.

Relationships

determine

your potential

God gives us advice for developing our personal relationships with friends, family

members, and coworkers. In every relationship, we must show love, dedication, and

high moral standards.

Watch your

speech

What we say shows our real attitude toward others. How we talk reveals what we are

really like. Our speech is a test of how wise we have become.

Work

diligently

Because God evaluates how we live, we should work purposefully. We must never be

lax or self-satisfied in using our skills.

Success is

knowing God

A successful relationship with God counts for eternity. Everything else is perishable.

All our resources, time, and talents come from God. We should strive to use them

wisely.

Themes of Ecclesiastes

Searching for

significance

People are still searching. Yet the more they try to get, the more they realize how little

they really have. No pleasure or happiness is possible without God. Without Him,

satisfaction is a lost search. Above everything, we should strive to know and love

God. He gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy.

Work for the

right reasons

Work done with the wrong attitude will leave us empty, but work accepted as an

assignment from God can be seen as a gift. God gives your abilities and opportunities
