Day 2We got up early and took a bus to three places. The first was Stonehenge.

It is the oldest structure still standing and it is an awesome sight.

In 3050BC a circular ditch with a bank was constructed. In 2600BC a wooden structure was added at the center. Between 2500-1000BC

the stone monument was constructed and then re-arranged.

The larger stones are called Sarsen stones and they came from Marlborough about 19 miles away. The smaller stones which are the inside circle are the Blue stones. They are from the Preseli Mountains in Wales 240 miles away!

This was called the Heel Stone and it was set apart from the ring of stones that make up the two circles.

In the area surrounding the circular structure there were mounds. These were burial mounds and entire houses would be buried when the family had all died.

The Riddle of the SphinxIf someone walks by the sphinx, it would ask them a riddle, "What has one voice, and yet goes from four legs, to two legs, to three legs?" The answer is a man (he uses four legs when he is a baby crawling on his hands and knees, two legs as an adult walking, and three legs when he is old and uses a cane).If the person answered the riddle incorrectly, the sphinx would eat them.If the person answered the riddle correctly, they would be allowed to pass.
